Overview

East End Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Studio Apartment, 1 Bath (Sleeps 1-2)

Lions Gate Getaway is a private studio apartment in a lush, tropical setting, humming birds share your 270 degree view of St. John, Tortola and Red Hook Harbor. In just a few minutes you can walk into Red Hook for shopping, dinner, drinks and night life or catch the ferries to St. John and the BVI.

The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand as the breeze passes by.

My husband Chris and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 20 years. He came to dive, I came to sail. We met and discovered we both had a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris built this house on the top of the hill, and now we have expanded it to accommodate guests in our apartment that captures the Caribbean life style. We look forward to helping you enjoy your vacation in any way we can. Just ask for local tips on restaurants and activities.

Charming Place & Hosts

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Lion's Gate for three nights. The hosts picked me up at the ferry in Red Hook and drove me up to the house. They were so welcoming and even drove me to the beach on the other side of Red Hook one afternoon. The place was absolutely lovely. Clean and neat, with an unbeatable breeze. The view is unbelievable. I had breakfast and coffee every morning on the porch and watched the sun rise. The hill is a bit steep - but the location to town is perfect, especially for someone not renting a car. Tons of eateries right at the bottom of the hill. Highly recommend!

Lion's Gate Cottage at Red Hook.

  • 5 of 5

We spent about 10 days in the cottage in March of 2015. It is everything as described and as in the other favorable reviews that follow. We did not rent a car, we are used to climbing hills as we live in Duluth so the steep grade was not a burden and, twice, neighbors gave us a lift. Sympathetic for us, seeing us laden with cases of beer I suppose. We enjoyed days at the cottage, not leaving at all, reading and dining there on the deck. We found the beach at nearby secret harbor fine. Lunch not bad there either. Took the ferry to St. Johns, spent the days on beaches there. You can get around but taxi transportation is a bit hit and a miss. The village of Red Hook had everything we needed. The cottage was comfortable, well appointed and the views magnificent. We left the doors open wide, day and night. Sounds of revelry up from the village at night were the only intrusion but they were kept at bay by shutting the windows and running the AC or a fan. No problem. We would certainly go back and stay there again and would recommend it without hesitation. It is beautiful there.

Want To Make Lion's Gate Our Home

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th visit to St. Thomas and we have found our permanent place of return! We will look no more! Where to start. Max! She was so accomodating and helpful from our arrivial to departure and every day in-between, she and her husband Chris made sure we had what we needed to make this our best experience on St. Thomas yet. We originally booked a week at Bluebeard Castel Resort and wanted to add a few days on the front of our week stay on St. Thomas and Lion's Gate is what we booked. We liked it so much that when we arrived at our timeshare, and were disapointed after such beautiful views, and great location at Lion's Gate, that we contacted Max to return and stayed in her 2nd accommodation, the Cottage, making our 11 day vacation completely perfect! Both places have such comfort and charm. The decks, I could stay all day just on the patio and decks. I did find I spent more time taking pictures and watching the ocean views than reading. We like to prepare our own meals and found the kitchen adequate for our needs. Why eat in a restaurant when we had the veiws and perfect setting at Lion's Gate! We always rent a vehicle when on St. Thomas as we like to go to the different beaches. We ferry the car over to St. John's, just a 20 min. ride and we are on a new Island to explore and enjoy our favorite beach of Trunk Bay. We did take walks down the hill and over to Sapphire Beach. We also walked down to the grocery store at the bottom of the hill from Lion's Gate. Red Hook Dock is right at the bottom of the hill and you can take the boats or Ferries from there. It is a steep hill climb back to Lion's Gate, but doable, you can take it at your own speed. We booked a sailboat trip with Max during the week. Perfect! They watched the winds and the waves and took us to the best places for the conditions. We loved sailing with Max and Andrew. He showed us so many things 'under the sea' that we had missed before, brought them up to the surface for us to hold and handle. We saw a spotted Eagle Ray, puffer fish, turtles and a Moray eel as well as the regular sea fish we normally see snorkeling in the Virgin Islands. It was so nice to have our own personal guide to teach us the things we'd been missing! An added suprize and bonus was receiving the pictures he had taken with his pro camera and then emailed to us at no extra charge, a rarity in the tourist industry. It was a great day! We can totally recommend Lion's Gate to anyone!

Great Location and Fabulous view!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Lion's Gate Getaway for a week and we absolutely loved it!!! The apartment is very comfortable with a full kitchen stocked with all amenities and appliances you could think of: blender, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, Cuisinart...even some little beer cozies! There is air conditioning, however we were fine with just leaving the windows open, as there is a great cross breeze that blows through and keeps the place cool. The front porch is AMAZING! It provides a terrific view of the harbor as well as the trees and hills. It served as a great outdoor dining area where we ate a few meals as well as had morning coffee out there. Mosquitos love me, so it was great that there were mosquito coils in the kitchen for use when sitting out on the porch so I was not a "buffet." There is a queen sized bed that was comfortable with high quality linens and pillows. The pillows are soft, which we were okay with. The stone shower was huge! Good water pressure and no issues with hot water.

This was a great location as we were walking distance to the Red Hook area which has many bars, restaurants, a grocery store (Moe's), as well as the Inter-island ferry dock right across the street. As this property is located at the TOP of a hill, it takes 2-3 minutes to walk into town (all downhill). However, to walk back up to Lion's Gate it is a STEEP hill. My hubby and I are in good shape and we timed it: 8 1/2 minutes to walk up the hill. So it is doable...but it is a climb. It does help to burn off rum drinks we had each day though :)

That said, it is just as easy to get a cab that will bring you back up to the property if you don't want to climb. So don't let that deter you. We loved being up on that hill, as the view was phenomenal!

To rent a car or not: If you rent a car, you will have a parking spot right in front of the property. I would say it's good to rent a car for at least part of your stay. It ensures you can sight see around the island. However, the cabs to go all over the island. They charge per passenger, but are fixed rates: so it ranges from $5-11 per person based upon the distance you are going.

Do ask Max for suggestions on what to do and where to go. She is really great and helpful! We didn't do a sailing trip with her this visit, but fully will next time!

Totally recommend this place for those wanting a place convenient to town with wonderful views.

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you enjoyed our little spot up here on the hill as much as we do. Even after 20 years we still get up in the morning to look at the view and watch the sunrise. It's especially nice when you see what the weather is doing up North. Already looking forward to your next visit thanks so much Max Lion's Gate Getaway

Perfect Perch for Us

  • 5 of 5

Lion's Gate studio was a lovely spot for our 5 night stay on St. Thomas after spending time on a friend's sailboat in St. Croix. The view was spectacular from high on the hill, and with the cooling breeze, we never needed to use the A/C. There were several beautiful beaches nearby (5 min drive) and there were lawn chairs & a small cooler available to take along. The apartment had everything we needed and was pleasing to the eye. A lovely veranda wrapped around two sides. The stone shower was huge. Recommend renting a car, there is small parking area at the top of the steep driveway. You can walk down the hill to Red Hook, but can you walk back up? Not me. This was our first time to Red Hook; there are some restaurants, bars, a few gift shops, drugstore, bank and a marina. Max and Chris can supply local knowledge about the area and beaches. This was a charming experience and we would certainly stay here again.

The relaxing getaway we were looking for

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week here and can't wait to plan our next visit! Starting your day with coffee on the porch with the most amazing views was easy to get used to. The apartment was well furnished, with everything we could possibly need. You won't find a better view in Red Hook. The walk down the hill to town wasn't too bad at all. You are so close to lots of restaurants, but I definitely recommend renting a car. We spent a lot of time at Sapphire beach, which was a 5 minute drive away and a relatively quiet beach. You have to book a sailing trip with Max, because it is hands down the best thing you can do on your visit. We spent our mornings and evenings on the porch taking in the views and enjoying the company of Eva, the resident pup. The bird watching from Lion's Gate is pretty good also. Anything we needed, Max helped us with right away. We are already anticipating our next visit, it is absolutely a slice of paradise at Lion's Gate, you won't be disappointed.
