House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

ESCAPE to Xaman Ik, a private beachhouse on the Yucatan's beautiful Flamingo Riviera, starting at $595/week.

XAMAN IK is an architect-designed, oceanfront oasis on the white sands and emerald green waters of San Bruno, on the Yucatan's unspoiled northern Gulf coast near the historic city of Merida.

This part of the Yucatan is one of Mexico's safest beach locales and the favorite winter haunt of thousands of Canadian and American snowbirds.

Xaman Ik is a charming modern-style beach house decorated with a whimsical mix of antiques, original art, Mexican folk art, beach boho and tropical chic.

Despite the relaxed, open plan beachhouse ambiance, you will want for nothing at Xaman Ik, which was built in 2008. With its oceanfront plunge pool, roof top terrace featuring spectacular 360 degree views of the Gulf and lagoon, LCD flat screen TV with Canadian Sat, Wi-Fi and Telcel stick, IPod docking station, DVD player and DVDs, games, fully equipped kitchen, UV water purification system, BBQ, outdoor dining and seating areas and plenty of outdoor furniture for your lounging comfort, Xaman Ik is tailor made for leisure time living.

All three bedrooms are built for comfort, with Queen size beds featuring pillow top mattresses and high-thread-count linens. And we provide plenty of beach and bath towels.

The oceanfront master bedroom has a large ensuite bathroom - with a roofless, outdoor tropical shower featuring a stone wall - and two closets, one a walk-in. The other two bedrooms - one is also oceanfront with a full length terrace and the other faces the lagoon with a small balcony - have double-size closets.

The sweeping ocean view is framed on both levels by wall-to-wall glass sliders, which provide enough cooling, natural cross ventilation to eliminate the need for air conditioning, though all rooms also come with ceiling fans.

And for those who like to stay plugged in, Wi-Fi and a Tel-cell stick is available for an additional charge. We also provide a local cell phone pre-programmed with the phone number of our Mexican / American property manager, who is just a call away.

Xaman Ik - which means North Wind in Mayan - is located in upscale San Bruno, 20 minutes from the thriving port city of Progreso, a regular cruise ship stop. The villa is a quick, 40 minute highway drive to Merida, partly along a new, eight lane freeway.

With it's first-rate restaurants, world-class museums, art galleries featuring some of Mexico's top talent, vibrant street scene and symphony orchestra, Merida is a thriving, must-see city with almost 1 million residents.

In Merida, you can shop in local mercados for the work of skilled artesanias from all over Mexico or sit it in an outdoor cafe on the Plaza Grande in Centro and watch the passing scene. And Merida, built on the site of the ancient Mayan city of T'ho, has one of Mexico's biggest and best Mardi Gras-style carnival's in the Americas, Carnaval, held at various times in Feb. or March.

Should you want to get a feel for Merida, then read all about it. The city has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail. The July 2012 issue of Conde Naste Travel magazine has an incisive 13-page cover story on the White City titled The Pleasures of Merida.

If you prefer the active, outdoor life, there is fishing, golfing, cave diving, hiking, biking, horseback riding, polo, eco-tours, bird watching and more. Birding is big, with lots of exotics to see, including indigenous parrots and pink flamingos that make their winter home in the lagoons all along the coast. All to add to your life list.

But perhaps best of all, Xaman Ik has miles of secluded beaches right on its front doorstep, perfect for castle building, shelling, dolphin-spotting or just strolling.

When hunger sets in, there are a couple of restaurants a short walk from Xaman Ik along the beach and even more on Progreso's beachfront Malecon. A quick drive into Merida and you are spoiled for choice, with every kind of eaterie, from elegant restaurants in historic haciendas, Argentinian steak houses, Mexican or Irish-themed pubs, restos featuring fresh seafood right from the Gulf to Mexican nouvelle fusion.

For those who want to explore the ancient Mayan world, Xaman Ik is central to a half dozen major Mayan archeological sites, including Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Uxmal, a Unesco World Heritage Site and Dzbilchaltun, just 15 minutes away.

Merida is one of Mexico's safest cities and with only one all-inclusive beach resort in the area, the Flamingo Coast is considered a destination primarily aimed at seasoned, sophisticated travellers.

Guests can fly into Merida's international airport a quick 45-minute drive away from Xaman Ik, or take a cheap charter into Cancun, a four hour drive by bus or car along a toll highway.

For more photos, please see our Kijiji listing *373786093.

PLEASE NOTE: The local bus goes right by the door, but a rental car is recommended.

About Gail Swainson

I am a writer and retired Toronto Star reporter. My husband is a cabinetmaker, businessman and musician.

Gail Swainson purchased this house in 2008
Why Gail Swainson chose Muna

We had been looking for our own little slice of tropical paradise for many years when we stumbled upon the beaches on the Yucatan's north coast.

We knew right away that it had everything we wanted --- broad, white sand beaches near an historical, safe, sophisticated, major city with modern, up-to-date amenities such as top-notch hospitals, good roads, shopping, theatres, art galleries and restaurants.

Yucatan's north coast has all this and more, but it is still steeped in its own rich, historic, architectural and cultural traditions.

The area is a perfect blend of the old and new, the familiar and the unknown: a unique mixture of big city living coupled with the peace and solitude of a tranquil tropical beach location.

After much looking, we purchased a spacious beachfront lot in San Bruno in 2005, hired an architect and Xaman Ik - which means North Wind in Mayan - was completed in 2008.

What makes this house unique

We love heading to our roof top deck at dawn - fresh squeezed orange juice in hand - to watch for flocks of flamingos doing their pink fly over (it doesn't happen every day in the winter, but come spring, hundreds are airborne over Xaman Ik almost every day).

Or strolling along the beach selecting the best shells and starfish tossed up on shore or a piece of primo driftwood to display somewhere around the house.

Sometimes we just sit by the water's edge scanning the horizon for dolphins or watching pelicans smoothly skim the waves looking for their next meal.

Other times, we drive the countryside looking for what is new, what is old and what is different from our everyday lives.

Best of all, within hours of arriving, we are somehow different people, operating on s-l-o-w Mexican beach time. We read by the pool, catch a quick nap and then head out to a local beach restaurant for fresh-from-the-Gulf fish enjoyed under a palm palapa.

Or we motor into town to visit friends, grab a bite, hit the galleries or catch a little night music in the Grande Plaza or a local club.

We would be delighted to have you as our guests at Xaman Ik, so you too, can rest a while in our little corner of tropical paradise.

Lovely Oceanfront Property

Submitted: March 1, 2013 Stayed: January 2013
My husband and myself stayed at Xaman Ik this January for 3 days and wish we could have stayed longer. The description is very accurate explaining the property. The photos definitely reflect the quality and amenities of the home. The grounds and home and pool were very clean. The owners were a joy to work with and very accomodating. We have already recommended Xaman Ik to friends. There are many attractions close by restaurants, fish markets, shopping, cenotes , mayan ruins beaching and more.We didnt see any Flamingos but look forward to seeing them next time.

Relaxing stay at Xaman Ik

5 of 5
Submitted: November 11, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
My wife & I have twice rented this 3-bdr, 2&1/2-bath casa along the San Bruno beach area 27 kms east of Progreso, Mexico; for a week in Oct 2011 and a week in Sep 2012. Both stays were relaxing get-aways from our home in Mérida to catch the cool Gulf breezes and view the beautiful flamingoes feeding in the shallow saline pools south of the highway to Telchac Puerto. There was plenty of room to invite friends to join us for several days and nights each visit. A fishermen's co-op less than 10 kms away, is a great place to buy fish (grouper and snapper) to cook on the charcoal grill. The fishing fleet was visible in the early dawn hours each morning from our bedroom's second story balcony. Fresh caught daily! The beach is nearly deserted in these months. A great blue heron wading in the gentle surf greeted us most mornings, while other birds wheeled overhead. The plumage of the flamingoes in the low-angled light of sunrise was spectacularly vibrant. Not far away are small ancient ruins in an area where the Maya harvested salt for centuries. Evening was a pleasant time to partake a cocktail beside the pool, look down the beach as the sun sank into the Gulf of Mexico, and contemplate the pleasures of one's day -- knowing that very likely tomorrow would bring a similar opportunity to appreciate the natural world. Thunderstorms punctuated several nights of our visits, providing a booming coda to the music of the day. Lightning knocked out the internet for the final three days of our latter stay, perhaps telling us Mother Nature thought we needed a break from an ingrained habit to "check e-mail". (The worldwide web via Wi-Fi was alive and well 15 mins away in Progreso, and cell phone towers nearby functioned for those needing a digital fix.) All-in-all, this casa, on this stretch of beach, at this time of year, provides an affordable opportunity to trade the hustle and bustle of the crowded, noisy, hot & gritty city for a tropical breeze-infused solitude where the soft sound of the gentle surf and the flutter of a bird wing or call of an iguana is all your auditory senses need put up with if you so choose. As Jimmy Buffet might call it, "a license to chill".
