|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Cute, quaint, and comfortable cabin located at 9500 feet elevation in the heavily wooded, beautiful historic mining town of Alpine, Colorado. Three miles down the road from the historic mining town of St Elmo. The cabin is located within about two hundred hundred yards of Chalk creek, and also the beautiful Alpine lake, and sits directly in front of Mt. Antero and Boulder mountain. The back of the property is adjacent to the national forest and so the cabin is extremely private.
The cabin is fully furnished for a comfortable stay and includes a fully furnished kitchen, and bathroom with shower. All guests will need to bring is personal toilet items and food. All linens, towels, and wash cloths will be provided. Sleeping accommodations are for six people and include: one bedroom down stairs with one queen-sized bed and two bedrooms upstairs with regular-sized beds.
Note: Cabin has a clothes washer but drying is by a clothes line which works great and is very fast in the dry mountain air (15-20 minutes).
AREA ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS
The scenery here is amazing. There is a gorgeous view of both Mt Antero and Mt Boulder off the front deck. Cabin is adjacent to national forest, is extremely quiet and private, and provides a starting point with access to all the best spots in the area. The cabin is located only 1/4 mile from the jeep road that ascends to the summit of Mt Antero (one of the exclusive locations in the US where aquamarine is found). An advantage also unique to this property is that it provides a starting point for ATV, trail bike, or snow mobile access to all the high country without hauling or trailing. The off-road vehicles can be unloaded at the cabin, and then driven to Mt Antero, Mt Boulder, the ghost town of St Elmo, Hancock (town or pass), Tincup pass, and the various alpine lakes such as Baldin, Hancock, Pomeroy, etc.
A general store is located at St Elmo, which is an excellent place to purchase gift items, and also rent ATV’s for exploring the surrounding high country. Buena Vista (17 miles), and Salida (30 miles) provide all necessary shopping and also have many nice restaurants, plus various interesting shops. Monarch mountain is approximately 35 miles away and provides excellent skiing and yet is reasonably priced.
The Mt Princeton hot springs pools are located about 9 miles back down the mountain, as well as a convenience store for gas and food. A fine restaurant is also located at the Mt Princeton facility.
Horse stables which provide fantastic trail riding are also located about 7 miles from Alpine, close to the interesting chalk cliffs.
The Arkansas river is excellent fishing year round, and has an incredible Caddis hatch in the spring, and is located about 13 miles away. Local fishing is on Chalk creek (which flows within a couple of hundred yards of the cabin), and excellent fishing for larger cutthroat trout can be had in several of the high alpine lakes nearby. All of this trout water is accessible by ATV.
Hiking and ATV riding starts at the property and is as good as it gets anywhere in the Rocky Mountains.
Cabin is located in Chalk Creek Gulch on Highway 162, which intersects with Highway 285 between Buena Vista and Salida. It is approximately a two hour drive from the Colorado Springs airport, and a three hour drive from the Denver airport.

We purchased this property in this location because of its safety, the quality of the community, the beauty of the surrounding country side, and all the activities available in the area.
The property has excellent year round access via passenger car, yet is remarkably quiet and private. The cool, dry mountain air of the high country has a fragrance and ambience that incredible.
Coming here was a wonderfully peaceful stop along out way. The deer, chipmunks, and the beautiful scenery were just a few of the joys we experienced. Thank you for your hospitality.
Great cabin and location.
The cabin was super clean. We will come back.
We were very pleased with the cabin. Scott worked with us when our deposit took a full week to get to him and we were leaving for Colorado before then! After the first night we never left the canyon as there was plenty to do there.
This cabin is a wonderful place to stay and the owners are very nice as well. (Love the old photos of Alpine & St Elmo). Beautiful Chalk Creek & Alpine Lake are nearby and the cabin is private.
My wife and I rented the cabin for an extended Labor Day Holiday. The goal was to rent a 4 wheeler and visit some high mountain terrain (especially some above the tree line). The cabin had the perfect location and provided a great place to relax and rest between trips. The summary would be that it is rustic, warm, and cozy. The view from the front porch, the comfortable bed, and all the windows are the highlights for me. It is also very clean and neat.
The St. Elmo General Store rents Arctic Cat ATV's, and we got an TRV (2-person) - it was a well maintained, high end machine. They were very nice, fun, and helpful. We rode 3 days. First we went to Tincup, and ate at Frenchy's. Second was Mt. Antero and surrounding area, including Brown Lake. Last we visited Hancock, the Alpine Tunnel, and ate at Pitkin. The Alpine Tunnel day was our favorite, but it was all just a different world, and sublime.
There is a lot to do in this area, and we picked just one thing and hit it hard. If you are visiting here then you should contact Scott about the cabin. He was very helpful, had restaurant suggestions, gave directions to the grocery store, etc, and has a great place for you to stay.
Solitude is hard to find today, but it is found in abundance at the cabin and surrounding area.
We stayed here in late September and the aspens were beautiful. We watched the snowfall move in on Mount Boulder and Mount Antero from the living room as we drank coffee in front of the fireplace. Deer cross the property all the time, especially in the evening. The location near St. Elmo and the numerous jeep trails in the area means there is always something to do and see. This cabin is awesome! We'll definitely be back!
This cabin is in the perfect location for an active vacation. We enjoyed being back in the mountains and away from TV and phones for a week. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay and was clean. While relaxing at night we enjoyed the many books in the cabin on the history of the area. We had our trip pretty well planned but Scott did offer to come over when we got there if we wanted some tips. We never took him up on that but appreciated the offer. While in the area we went horseback riding at Antero Mountain Ranch, rented ATV's from the St. Elmo General Store (the highlight of the trip), did a one night backpacking trip to the Horn Fork Basin below Mt. Harvard and went white water rafting. The last morning at the cabin included an early morning hike to the mine on Boulder Mountain. If I would have done better research on that hike (13 miles) I would have gone the extra three and hiked to Antero. It was nice though to look down on Alpine and the cabin from Boulder Mountain and my wife and kids could see me from the deck with the binoculars. We cooked most of our meals on the gas grill at the cabin but after backpacking the Horn Fork Basin we were hungry for pizza. I had heard of a good pizza place in Salida and we found Amicas Pizza and Microbrewery. The pizza and beer were so good after eating a few freeze dried meals the day before. It is worth the trip from the cabin to eat there. This was a great place to stay and it is in a beautiful and quiet area. We hope to get back there again. Thank you to Scott for sharing his cabin.
