Our family has been renting (close to) Memorial Day Holiday homes for a number of years now. We have much experience in reading reviews and choosing nice homes that will accommodate our large family. We book for everyone and each family (4 families) come and go as they are able.
Even tho Cedar Creek Lake is quite low, we found other activities to fill time. The Whatz Up family fun park was a great hit among the kids (and adults as well!!!) Swimming was not possible at the dock, as the water was so incredibly low and really nasty!! Of course this is totally out of the control of the owners!
We arrived and proceeded to the nearest grocery store to purchase food for the 5 days for our large group, not a small expense in and of itself.
Everything appeared clean and acceptible, on the surface. I was shocked to find window units in the upstairs bedroom, finding out the upstairs A/C did not operate at all!! Upon closer inspect, there were bug droppings in the window sills and cob webs in the upper windows. I'm sure bugs can be an issue in homes near water. It wasn't until the first night we actually started seeing LIVE bugs. Two were in my bed, on me!!!!!!!! And our daughter reached into the Master bath drawer to stick her hand into a drawer full of spider webs!! Next morning I called to mention this and the response I got from Christine was "Oh I'm sorry, I will speak with the house keepers"!!!!?
At dinner, first sitting at dining room table, we encountered cob webs thickly underneath the table!!!! There were two (brown recluse) spiders in the master bath and we continued to see bugs throughout that day.
We were in a dilemma what to do. we had this house rented for 5 days and were paying a house sitter our home for 5 days. IF we left we had nowhere to go, not to mention hundreds of dollars worth of food for our stay. But the next morning when we killed a ROACH, nothing mattered. We packed up and left, praying we did not bring roaches to our homes! After days of speaking with John, trying to get a refund, and a few threats we were lucky to get anything back since we excepted the no refund stipulation, we finally took a partial refund just to get something back. We were shorted on the refund, but he did give us the cleaning fee back, only fair. We honestly felt they were the ones not honoring their contract by having such conditions in the home.
Until the bug issue is taken care of, I would think before renting this home. It was a disappointing stay, our first
Owner's Response: The house is always cleaned by the same cleaners. If there were problems, I have not heard of similar ones before or after.
The renter said at check in that her party was smaller than expected. She stated she was upset that they did not pay her.
She did contact our manager the first night with issues and then me again the next morning.
Immediatly, she stated that she had already talked to her credit card company and threatened to have the entire charge reversed. I reminded her that she had a contraact and owed the entire amount (which is what she is calling my threat).
I stated right away that I would be happy to work with her.
After she told me of the "horrors" of the night, I asked if she wanted to leave and get a refund. She said no because a refund would not be enough for her to take everyone to a hotel. I realized she wanted MORE than her full money back.
She stated that they would like to stay another night at least (which was the lastnight MOST of her party was staying).
Predictably, the next day she called and said she wanted out so I told her I would refund the unused nights.
We charge per person when their are more than 6 guests.
When I calculated the refund, I calulated the 2 nights stay for all of the people that were there, and refunded the 3 nights remaining at the minimum (which is what she paid).
ADDITIONALLY - I refunded the cleaning fee even though they used the house and I had to pay the fee anyway.
So, I let her leave when she wanted, refunded her remaining nights and gave her back a cleaning fee, even though she CHOOSE TO STAY another night after finding all of these "horrible" things.
Her complaint is that I did not divide the nights equally, and give her back equal % for the unused nights.
As she had many guests the stayed nights, and less than the minimum the remaining, this seemed unfair to me.
She was unable or unwilling to process this calculation fully, but agreed (In writing) to the return amount.
Summary - She was only charged exactly for what she used for 2 nights LESS the $95 cleaning fee that I returned to her.
She got to stay when she wanted, leave early in violation of her contract and paid less than anyone else would for 2 nights stay with that many people, and still she is complaining.
If anyone is thinking about booking the house and may not be able to afford it, please do not. This woman seemed financially distressed from the start of her stay, and it has led to this.
