About Terry Schoneberg

We stayed in the Wailele Kai in September 2013 during our vacation to the Big Island and we fell absolutely in love with the house and the view of the ocean from the house and lanai. Shortly thereafter, we offered to buy the Wailele Kai (the previous name for the home). After reaching an agreement with the prior owners and buying the property we renamed her Paradise Pali Kai. We are excited to be able to share our home in PARADISE with other vacationers. Terry Schoneberg, Sunrise Properties, is the property manager and having lived in the Hilo area for over 40 years can fully assist you, as he did us, in making this a trip of a lifetime.

Terry Schoneberg purchased this house in 2013

Why Terry Schoneberg chose Hilo

Why The Big Island: We have visited Hawaii many times. Of all the islands, the Big Island is our favorite. The Big Island is less commercialized, and there is a greater variety of things to do and see. To name a few, Volcano National Park is a must see, the Japanese gardens, the banyan trees on Banyan Drive, jungle gardens and amazing waterfalls, pele’s lava; black, white, and green sand beaches and; at times lava flowing into the ocean near Kalapana.

Why the Hilo area: While we like the Kailua Kona area on the west side, we enjoy the lushness and beauty of the eastern side more. The eastern side is a tropical beauty and the ocean is majestic. Paradise Pali Kai is ocean front in a quiet residential neighborhood in Keaau, about 20 minutes outside Hilo. Thanks to the excellent road system, travel to the western, southern, and northern ends of the island is an easy drive from Keaau.

The Unique Benefits of this House: First, the house and views are simply stunning. The magic of the location is how close the house and lanai are to the ocean and the waves. The waves break directly on the lava cliffs IN THE BACKYARD. It is dramatic to view from the lanai, “great room”, and master bedroom, all of which are on the second floor facing the ocean. Every room upstairs and downstairs, has a view of the ocean.

What makes this house unique

The Finest quality luxury in every corner of our home. In the front of the house, in a beautifully landscaped and protected private courtyard, is a gorgeous lagoon pool with waterfalls, lanai and covered patio. While the tropics are beautiful, it can at times be unbearably hot and humid, particularly to those accustomed to a cooler or drier environment or central air conditioning. To eliminate this problem, the home has an air-conditioning system that cools, filters and dehumidifies the air. It is a zoned system and the temperature of each bedroom and the “great room” can be individually controlled. Most vacation homes in Hawaii do not have air conditioning, but this vacation home defines luxury. In addition, there are fans throughout the house for ambiance and use on cooler days. Paradise Pali Kai is true luxury. Mahalo

Wow!

What a great house with an out of this world view. The house is architecturally beautiful, well designed, and designer decorated. Unlike other ocean front homes we have stayed in that had a lot of mildew and looked weathered, this house looks brand new. It is beautiful and very well maintained. The pool side landscaping is as lush and beautiful as any 5-star resort. The kitchen is modern and very well equipped and the view of the ocean standing at the kitchen sink made washing dishes a joy. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the lanai listening to the ocean and watching the waves. It was so mesmerizing and relaxing. I think I could have spent the whole week on the back lanai. The air conditioning was a big plus to us. While the climate was temperate, it was quite humid. Without the a/c it would have been warm and sticky. A week is not enough time to see and do everything the big island has to offer. The Kapoho tide pools snorkeling was outstanding and the view of the milky way on Mauna Kea was unreal. Our visit to the historic town of Kalapana and the new black sand beach sent shivers down our spine. We barely scratched the surface of things to see and do and will definitely will return. It was by far the best vacation and vacation home we have stayed in and we are already talking about our next trip. We can't wait to come back!

Great VRBO!

We have rented a lot of vacation homes and this one ranks at the top! This home suited four of us very well. The views were well planned out and each room had a great view, even though we spent our time on the lanai which was perfect! The kitchen was extremely well stocked with modern appliances. We cooked at home every morning and most nights and ate on the lanai...wonderful! Our greatest joy was the whales signing every night. We hope to come back.

Great place!

We stayed here 4 nights before heading out to Kona. The house was absolutely beautiful, clean, and well kept. We knew it was going to be a beautiful home and we were still impressed with how well designed it was and how beautiful it's been maintained. We ate in every day: breakfast and dinner and the kitchen was pretty well equipped though the dish washer can be replaced and the knives should be replaced with something better. We loved the location of the house, very secluded and view of the ocean was absolutely amazing. We loved hearing the waves and voice of the insects. We would stay here again and highly recommend it. Beware that there's no access to the beach at the house and there isn't really any nice beaches that we could find (with similar quality to Hapuna Beach or Mauna Kea Beach) in Hilo. It took us about 20 minutes to go into Hilo downtown for shopping. Highly recommend the farmer market if interested in exotic/tropical fruits.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you very much for your review. We will get the dishwasher and knifes replaced asap. We want everything to be perfect and apologize the dishwasher and knifes were not up to the five star standard we strive for. While the view from an oceanfront home is glorious, it isn't without a continuous battle against salt corrosion. Watching and listening to the waves crash against the cliff from the upper lanai or taking a nap on a lounger on the lower lanai is as peaceful and relaxing as it gets. It brings us great pleasure to know our home is creating memories of a lifetime for others and makes the effort to maintain it well worth it. Mahalo, Dee and Eugene

Spectacular in every way

  • 5 of 5

Although I thought it would be nice I didn't quite expect it to be that nice. The vegetation in the pool area has grown quite a bit so it is even nicer than the web picture. I would agree with other reviewers commenting on the cleanliness of the property. We caught the tail end of a passing tropical storm and when they say it rains on the Big Island (east side) it was wet. We checked out some of the waterfalls that day and the water coming over them into the sea was impressive if not scary. The larger beds were supercomfortable and the kitchen was well equipped with even some condiments leftover. Although it took a 25 minute drive we ate at some good restaurants downtown. All in all lit was a memorable stay and we were extremely pleased.

Beautiful, Clean, and Highly Recommended

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited last month with our two children, ages 10 & 16. This was our first trip to the Big Island, and we were absolutely thrilled when we arrived at this beautiful home. It was just like the pictures, and exactly as described. Had fun swimming during our down time, and playing games (provided by the homeowner) on the lanai in the evening. Very well maintained and CLEAN (which is a big deal to me…I consider myself VERY picky when it comes to a clean hotel). We stayed for 3 nights while exploring Volcanoes National Park, which was a very easy drive from this location. In fact, everything about this place was easy…from booking, to finding the home, to communicating with the property manager. I would absolutely return, and definitely recommend this home to anyone looking to stay on the Hilo side of the island. The only thing that could be considered a "downside" to some (but not to us)! is that it's not close to anything (restaurants, shopping, etc). It's probably a good 20-30 minute drive to most places, and a bit farther to the volcanoes. The other thing to consider is that the main living area, master bedroom, kitchen, are all on the second floor, so if you have trouble walking up stairs I would probably not rent this home.

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for your review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed Paradise Pali Kai. We are obsessive about cleanliness and thrilled that it had as much value to you as it does to us. Some day we want to retire here. In the meantime, it brings us immense joy to know others enjoy PPK as much as we do.
