Tom arrived in Juneau in 1977 and Debbie arrived three years later. They completed their new home along with the Alaska Northern Sands Suite and the Ocean View Room on the Auke Bay beach in August of 2005.
The Owner purchased this apartment in 2005
We were extremely fortunate to be able to build our home and the Alaska Northern Sands vacation rental on the Auke Bay beach. It is unique because of its spectacular views, proximate access to the Juneau International Airport, the Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal, and shopping as well as the relative quite of the surrounding neighborhood.
Be sure to bring your binoculars for the best viewing of wildlife and the spectacular scenery! From your accommodations, the gazebo or on the beach you just might see, Eagles – regularly year round, right in front of your Suite; Salmon – regularly jumping in July & August; Orcas – occasionally in summer, usually in the distance; Humpback whales – occasionally in summer, sometimes as close as 100 yards off shore. And although rarely, we have even seen them breach in front of the house; Otters – occasionally year round; Seals – occasionally year round; Sea Lions - often in winter; Ducks – regularly in fall and winter; Deer – occasionally year round; Blue Herons– occasionally in summer. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the AKNS waterfall and pond from the Suite or the veranda. Walk down to the beach for some Alaska beachcombing. Or just relax and enjoy the view and the sounds of the ocean waves from our oceanfront gazebo.
Alaska Northern Sands in beyond amazing and the owners, Tom and Debbie, are wonderful people to work with. The suites are spacious, very clean and well maintained. The views of Auke Bay are stunning. The property is beautifully manicured and the surrounding landscape is impressive. This property, the location and its owners will make your Alaskan dreams come true. Words cannot describe the beauty you will find at Northern Sands and will only add to your Alaskan experience.
My husband and I stayed in the Ocean View Room and it was perfect! The room was very nice, clean and spacious! It was on a beautiful, peaceful spot right on Auke Bay. It was convenient to Juneau and all our excursions. We couldn't of asked for a better place to stay!! The owners, Tom and Debbie, were wonderful! We would definitely do it all over again!
We stayed up in the penthouse for I believe 4 nights back in Aug 2012. It was not nearly a long enough stay. The views are absolutely breathtaking and the accommodations are so nice, clean and comfortable. You can lay in bed and watch the bay or leave the blinds open at night to see the Aurora Borealis. Denali, the dog, hung out with us many times which we loved since we missed our dog at home. Not only was this trip special because it was part of our honeymoon but the overall experience made it that much better. If you are thinking about it, do it!! :) There is no better choice in the area. We will be back soon!
From pick-up at the ferry by Tom to departure everything was perfect about this place- Tom and Debbie are wonderful hosts. They keep their home, garden and suites immaculate - this is definitely better than any hotel. The location on Auke Bay is gorgeous-even in winter in heavy snow there were sea otters and sea lions in the water with eagles overhead.
We had the ocean view room with a very large picture window which was perfect for watching the changing scenery of the bay. The room was well equipped for cooking our meals with a full-size fridge, ice-maker, filter coffee machine, large microwave and plug in appliances. The floor was heated so the room was very cosy during the wintery conditions and the bed was very comfortable. There is a floor between the ocean view room and the apartment above so there is no noise and the room is very private with its own entry and access to the water.
We would go back in a heartbeat and cannot thank Tom and Debbie enough for their hospitality.
We stayed at this wonderful home for 9 days in August, 2013. Pictures don't do this place justice. This isn't a suite, it's an apartment with picture windows in the living room and bedroom that view the tranquil bay with all it's many little islands. Waking up each morning to the majestic scenes outside our window was a real treat. Although the penthouse it attached to the main house, we had complete privacy and solitude. The landscaping surrounding all sides of the property was worthy of a page in Better Homes and Gardens. The owners take pride in their love of gardening by displaying a myriad of flowers and foliage in little garden areas throughout the property. The walk downstairs to the gazebo is magical in and of itself, but once you get there, you are greeted by a huge hanging flower pots and tea lights with comfortable chairs in which to enjoy your coffee on the bay. Tom and Debbie are gracious hosts who offer unlimited information about the sights to see around Juneau. And, to top it off, since we are dog lovers, they allowed their sweet Golden retriever/Australian shepherd mix, Denali, to visit us on a daily basis. We had 4 days of sunshine, followed by cloudy but comfortable temperatures. Nine days wasn't long enough. We will definitely return again if we are in Juneau.
We had a fabulous 5 day stay here in Juneau. This is our 6th trip through Alaska and our first on the inside passage. Our stay here was a respite between Wasilla and Petersburg...and what a treat it was! Great host: Tom met us at the airport to escort us and Deb showed us where to watch for bears...but they avoided us. We have stayed in many 5 Star hotels and this I would give a 6 or 7 in STARS! Not what you would expect in Alaska, no roughing it here. The view was absolutely breathtaking...tempted us to stay put and do nothing...but we had wonderful days kayaking the Mendenhall Glacier and hiking the East Glacier Trail...both were great fun. We had one total rain day...but from the outside covered patio we enjoyed even this. We had our 24 year old granddaughter with us who delighted in having her own studio room...thought she might just move in and stay! We enjoyed downtown when the cruise ships were gone and had lunch twice at 'The Hangar'. Thank you for providing us with everything we could possibly need...I personally appreciated the washer/dryer since we are traveling Alaska for a month.
Flightseeing tours, 10 minute drive to view the Mendenhall Glacier, with black bear viewing typically in August and early September.
