Betty, Eric and Sugar are wonderful hosts. They offer help and suggestions to newcomers to get the lay of the land. The website pictures are accurate and true, But it does not capture how "at home" you will feel. The views from the house and property are spectacular. Eric gets a gold star for keeping the property groomed like a Country Club, You can tell it is a labor of love for Him.

Jonesport Maine is a wonderful secluded location, But close enough to Acadia in the south or Lubec to the north. The Barn is truly a wonderful relaxing stay. We will return again next year.

The Perfect Vacation Spot

This year was our second year at The Barn and we are already looking forward to next year’s trip!

Location: We’ve found Down East, Maine to be one of the most picturesque and relaxing places. It’s a vacationer’s dream…unspoiled and peaceful with no lack of character and charm. We love spending our days hiking along the Bold Coast (unreal), lazing at the beach, and exploring the local towns.

The Barn: After our daily explorations, we found evenings at The Barn to be perfect. Gorgeous sunsets provide the perfect backdrop for cocktails and fresh seafood dinners. We were also lucky enough to enjoy a full moon during our stay…the moon reflecting over the water was so incredibly beautiful and memorable.

Hosts: Eric and Betty are the loveliest of hosts. The love and care they put into The Barn is impossible to miss. The same is true in their effort to ensure you have a wonderful stay. Whether it’s by stocking The Barn with information on the area or providing their personal recommendations, you are sure to get the most out of Down East, Maine. It’s also important to note, that while Eric and Betty will provide as much information about the area as you’d like, they are also incredibly respectful of your privacy. They look to you to initiate interactions and never impose.

Owner's Response: We wish every guest at The Barn could experience a full moon while they're here. It's truly an amazing sight--the sparkling reflection over the water is mesmerizing--but whether you're here during a full moon or not, it's always incredibly beautiful. We think you'll be glad that you've chosen The Barn at Mary Jim's Shore!

Rest and Relaxation with a capital R!

We had a wonderful and relaxing week at The Barn! We have rented through VRBO before, but never before have we stayed at a place that was as clean, well cared-for, and just downright comfortable as The Barn. The view was beautiful and the setting peaceful. We had a mixed weather week, which actually worked out perfectly. We alternated between reading and relaxing on the incredibly cozy couches (my husband had his Kindle but I didn't need mine...there was a wonderful selection of books available to choose from) and then when the weather cooperated, we ventured out to Campobello Island, West Quoddy Point, Great Wass Island, and on our last day, a spectacular hike on the Bold Coast. There is plenty more we could have found to do if we had wanted to stay busier, but we were content to stay right where we were. We ate out a few times but prepared most of our own meals in the very well appointed kitchen.

Eric and Betty were wonderful hosts and thought of every detail to make our stay comfortable. Even their video selection was fun...a couple of favorites included the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice and the Best of the Carol Burnett Show. Can you think of better viewing on vacation? The only amenity we failed to take advantage of (thanks to the weather) was the fire pit on the beach.

If you are looking to get away from it all, enjoy the natural beauty of Maine, and be very comfortable while you do it, this is the place to go!

Owner's Response: We agree--The Barn is a wonderfully relaxing place and often after we've prepared it for the next guests and think, "We wish I were staying here for a week!" Although we can't control the weather, we do try and provide plenty of good reading and viewing materials. Of course, when the sun is brightly shining, you wouldn't want to miss any of the beauty of Downeast Maine!

A Truly Magic Place

It was definitely the best of times!

This was our seventh trip to Maine, and our week at The Barn will always be one of the most memorable. The Barn itself was even nicer than we expected, we had everything we could have wanted, and we felt like we were staying at a friend's home. And honestly, by the time we left, we had become friends with Eric and Betty. And there was also Sugar, their wonderful dog, who would drop by for an occasional visit. Some days we traveled - to Jasper Beach and Great Wass Island - coming home to grill fresh fish for dinner. Other days we hung around the house, reading, and driving to grab lunch at Bayview Takeout on Beal Island. You just can't beat their milkshakes, so many flavors to choose from, and so few days. There's a little restaurant close by, Smoky Toast Cafe, and it's definitely the place to get pancakes for breakfast. But be warned, they're huge! You only need one.

Another wonderful thing about our trip was that there were two families of Canadian Geese staying at the ponds. It was so much fun watching them every day. And then there was the little red squirrel we watched out the kitchen windows as she made her frequent visits to the bird bath, and then to a flat rock to eat berries.

I guess the bottom line is that we highly recommend The Barn to anyone looking for a lovely property that is beautifully furnished. You'll fall in love with the place and the owners.

Owner's Response: We always love it when guests enjoy the natural surroundings of The Barn and feel so comfortable in it. It's not your typical "sterile" sort of rental cottage--more like visiting your favorite Aunt's home on the coast of Maine. We hope you'll give it a try!

A Peaceful Slice of Maine Coastline

We spent a week at The Barn near Jonesport during our honeymoon. Eric and Betty were wonderful hosts, and clearly take great pride in making The Barn as comfortable as they would their own home. Eric told us, shortly before the end of our stay, that they felt they could stay here themselves and move back and forth between their home next door and The Barn each week.

They think of everything, from carefully preparing the fireplace and ensuring there's enough cut wood to stocking the kitchen with everything you might need to cook with for your visit. This is definitely not one of those rentals where you feel the owners are just in it to rake in the cash. Eric grew up on this property, and taking care of it is much more than a hobby.

The property is beautiful, with a small rocky beach at the end of the back yard overlooking Chandler Bay. You can also take a very short walk, at low tide, to a large sandy beach. Eric and Betty live next door just a few feet away, but it's still a very private location and one of the quietest places we've ever stayed (unless you count listening to the waves hitting the shore as excessive noise). Both The Barn and their house are carefully designed to maintain that privacy with each other.

We felt this was the perfect place to relax after all the planning and excitement that went into our wedding. And if you crave the tourist masses and cultivated hiking trails of Mt. Desert Island, it's only about 100 minutes away.
Owner's Response: We love having honeymoon couples at The Barn. It's a lovely place to begin a long and happy marriage and we always feel honored when couples choose our cottage from all that are offered on Home Away! If you're looking for a cozy, romantic spot with magnificent views, The Barn at Mary Jim's Shore fills the bill!
