Mitch and Mary are a retired couple who fell in love with the Door County area. Mitch was a tile contractor and always wanted to build his own home. Since 2006 we have been building this home. Building in a quarry has presented some challenges, but it is guaranteed to be unique.
The Owner purchased this house in 2006

My wife and I had shipped our son and daughter off to college and needed someplace to escape to in order to recharge our batteries. Our golden retriever asked to make the trip as well. Fortunately, I stumbled upon the perfect location to enjoy some rest and relaxation. The Quarry House was the right destination. Mary and Mitch were wonderful hosts, inviting us into their home, sharing stories, answering questions and graciously inviting us for crackers, cheese and wine one evening under Mitch's handcrafted pergola. Their place is spectacular, off the beaten path yet close enough to everything and every place that we wished to visit. We spent days hiking and biking the paths of Newport State Park and Peninsula State Park and sitting in the sunshine along Lake Michigan and reading a good book. The Carriage House accommodations were superb - clean, spacious and comfortable (with a whirlpool tub to soak aching muscles at the end of the day). Every amenity that we might have needed was available. I enjoyed sitting in the shade under the pergola and reading as the chickadees, nuthatches, blue jays, red bellied woodpeckers, Downy & Hairy woodpeckers and Kingfishers kept me company. It was the perfect spot for us with two wonderful hosts.
Just spent a great week in Door County, on the outskirts of Fish Creek, at this unusual and beautiful house in a quarry. Mitch and Mary were our hosts, they were gracious, thoughtful, and generous. They gave us a tour of the whole house, which was very interesting, and Mary even made us a zucchini bread and picked some tomatoes for us. They live on the property, and were respectful of our privacy, but were available to help us if needed. Though the carriage house is attached to the main house, there is an outside stairway between the two buildings, so we could never hear them. They made sure we knew we were welcome to join them on their patio any time, but if we just wanted to wind down alone after an active day, there was a small patio with table and chairs behind the carriage house as well. We were able to bike from the house, and Peninsula state Park was just a few minutes by car. We spent our time there hiking with my dog, kayaking and biking. It rained one day out of the week, which was perfect for gallery hopping.
My boyfriend and I came up to Fish Creek with our dog, and the Carriage House was a perfect spot for us. We actually had tons of space (you could easily have a group of 4 people here) and the property was beautiful! There was pretty much anything and everything we could need right there in the unit, including pots, pans, and utensils, towels, DVDs...the list goes one. The house is a little off-set from the main part of town, which was actually really nice. You could drive, bike, or walk to the downtown area as well as Peninsula State Park (which we went to each day we were there!) Mitch and Mary were very friendly and really went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable -- they even left out a basket of toys for our dog! We would definitely love to come back here!
