Reef Bay Cottage

Reef Bay Cottage is a very nice vacation rental. It is very clean and well appointed.
We were guests in the cottage for two weeks at the end of June, 2012. Seng, the owner, was extremely helpful in making the reservation but also in helping us find out about other things to do on St. John. She really went out of her way to accommodate my family and I. The location is great because it is away from the crowds, if there are any, but still only about a 15 minute drive to Cruz Bay. We felt as if we were a little secluded but not too far away from town if we needed to run to the market for something. Seng does a very nice job stocking the cottage with most toiletries and condiments that the average person would need during their stay. The kitchen is also well equipped with anything you would need for cooking. The beach chairs, coolers, and washer/dryer are a few other great things that she provided. You could really bring just a few changes of clothes and be fine. The pool area is located just up the hill below the owners house, which is also where you have to go to use the wifi signal. We only used the pool a few times but it was very nice when we did. It would be nice to have wifi in the cottage but due to its location it is not possible, they have tried. If one thing could be improved in the cottage it would be the windows that face the ocean, some are starting to show the normal cloudy deposits between the glass that you get with an ocean facing window, but that is it.
The beach that is below the cottage is about a 10 minute walk, the trail is steep but it was easily negotiated by my wife and 6 year old son. There are steps built into it and ropes to hold onto if you need them. As long as you can negotiate a step that is knee high you will be fine. The beach is nice for walking, but not great for swimming due to larger than average surf and abundance of sea urchins in certain areas. If you surf its one of the best beaches on the island.
I would recommend this cottage to anyone with a family of 2-4 people, the downstairs portion of the cottage would be great for teenagers. The mosquito's were not a problem except in the very early mornings when the trade winds were hardly blowing. Not sure if this is normal for June but it was good for us. Some of the places we enjoyed: Sam and Jack's Deli, Margarita Phil's, Woody's, The Banana Deck, The Beach Bar, sailing and snorkeling on Survivan, and there really isnt a bad beach on the island.
