Daufuskie Island Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Oversized Bedrooms 2 Large Bathrooms-Romantic or Family Friendly Sleeps 8

The 45 minute boat ride from nearby Hilton Head or Bluffton makes the stress of the week peel away with the sea breezes and the smell of the ocean. Drive your golf cart; wind through the centuries old Live Oaks, pass the lush golf course greens on to your cottage. Unlock the door to be welcomed by a magnificent view of the Atlantic just steps away, not behind other cottages. No need to flip coins to see who gets the bigger room, both are the same size, each Large with two Queen beds and private baths. Completely renovated with hardwood floors and granite counters in the kitchen with a Caribbean flare.

Relax on the huge screened porch or walk on the wide beach or shady lanes. Explore the Marshes or the inlets by kayak.

Ride Golf carts, fly kites, read books, write a book, make s'mores over a campfire, eat at some of the low country restaurants.

The hardest thing to do on Daufuskie is to decide between walking the quiet, clean beach, reading a book by the fire, searching for the elusive alligator in the ponds, sighting the seasonal Sea Turtle eggs or exploring for historic relics such as Indian arrowheads from the Civil War and ruins from the plantation days. Then again a game of tennis or a round of golf might satisfy. Or you could visit the Silver Dew Pottery for a lesson and local souvenir, the Island Museum for an education of the island or the Community Farm with it's adorable animals. Make sure to ask what the animal's names are when touring the Farm.

Or just see what the island offers your senses.

About Loretta

Our family lives in Atlanta, Georgia. We love to travel the world but always yearn to get to our favorite place, Daufuskie Island. This picture taken at Marshside Mama's.

Loretta purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Loretta chose Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie intrigued our business and vacation interests. We knew that owning a place where our family could go on a weekend that didn't stress us out with traffic jams, long restaurant lines, and t-shirt shops one after the other AND be on the Atlantic Ocean within 5 hours was a good investment in family time.

What makes this cottage unique

We chose Daufuskie because it does not have all the chaotic demands of the typical tourist communities. We felt we could truly relax with family and friends while enjoying an incredible island experience so close to home. The Atlantic Ocean views from our screened porch, bedroom and yard are spectacular. We hear the waves, watch the boaters and the seagulls while eating breakfast on the porch.

Peaceful and Enjoyable Family Trip

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I flew in to Savannah for a family wedding on Daufuskie. From the moment we arrived at the Bloody Point water taxi (in Savannah) we were taken care of. Going in to the trip, I was hesitant on how easy it would be to get to the island and I really cannot emphasize how smooth it went. Between the amazing staff at Bloody Point and Loretta's preparation it was seamless.

The island itself has some of the best scenery there is to offer. View from the back porch is amazing. We played golf at both Melrose and Bloody Point, both have fun tracks, but bring your bug spray! We at at Marshside Mama's, this is a must, live music, great seafood and cold beer, what else can you ask for on a vacation.

The cottage is so cute! Well maintained, clean and large bathrooms and kitchen made for a convenient stay. We loved drinking coffee on the large screened in porch each morning.

Overall, we had an outstanding time and again Loretta could not have been more helpful. We are hoping to make a return trip in the coming years!

Owner's Response: Hi Matt! Sounds like the wedding at the Historic Church went well. What a beautiful setting under the Old Live Oaks, both steeped in the history of the island and still making more memories. When I checked in with you to see how the cottage was and how your family was doing, I could hear the smile in your voice. I believe more than half the experience starts with the right attitude going into the adventure. Please return someday to play the courses and relax "Low Country style". Warm Regards, Loretta DaufuskieIslandgirl@gmail.com

Great, Relaxing Getaway Spot!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this lovely beach cottage and little island - they are a treasure! We went away to Daufuskie to get away and unwind. What a treat! If you're looking for lots of activities, and hustle and bustle, this will not be the place for you. But if you're looking for relaxation, beauty and quiet enjoyment - don't miss it!

The cottage itself was beautiful inside and out, and the location could not be better. Every amenity you need is there for your convenience - from the kitchen, to information on the island, to games and books, to the ocean right out your back door!

We drove all over Daufuskie (despite record-setting cold temps in February) exploring all the historical points. We saw alligators, birds of all kinds, and dolphins. We also visited the artisans on the island - Iron Fish, Silver Dew Pottery and the Daufuskie Rum Company (for a tour and tasting.) Everything was enjoyable, interesting and educational. (And thanks Loretta for the cart blankets - we surely needed them!)

We ate at Marshside Mammas twice - not to be missed - and at the Eagle's Nest - also delicious. But, as mentioned in other reviews - if you don't want to eat out every meal, bring plenty of supplies for yourself, as the options to buy food items are extremely limited. But you will have everything you need, in terms of kitchen options at the cottage!

We used Chris from May River Excursions and he was awesome - so informative and friendly on our boat ride over - it wasn't just transportation, it was a tour. And Freddie was so nice and helpful when we got there; he wouldn't even allow me to carry a bag up the dock to the van. What great service!

I bought my first Spartina 449 handbag while I was there. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation and their designs represent the color and beauty of Daufuskie. I have received so many compliments on it and when I carry it, it is a reminder of our wonderful time on the island!

Finally, I have to say a word about Loretta, the owner of the quaint cottage on Daufuskie. She was wonderful to work with, answered our every question, and provided so much helpful information. She did not miss a thing in giving us the information we needed ahead of time, and providing great suggestions for our time there. You can't go wrong with Loretta - she will do right by you in planning your trip!

Better than expected and Loretta is amazing

  • 5 of 5

If you're wanting a relaxing getaway, Daufuskie Island is exactly what you're looking for. Don't get me wrong, it DOES take more planning and effort on the front end to get there, but it's definitely worth what you get in return!

Loretta was super helpful from beginning to end. She'll tell you everything you need to do beforehand--from grocery recommendations to water taxi information to logistics. Every question I had, she took the time to answer in detail. I couldn't say enough great things about working with her.

The house is even better in person--it's awesome! The furnishings are very nice and very comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook your meals. The location can't be beat--you are steps away from the most pristine beach you've ever walked down.

Here are some observations/recommendations, if you're interested in spending time on Daufuskie:

--Stock up on all the food you think you will need before hand. There is a tiny convenience store on the island, but that's it. It has the bare essentials--milk, soft drinks, candy, eggs (one carton), bacon (one package), etc. If you run out of food, your only option is to eat at one of the restaurants. With four boys, we ran out quickly, but luckily we were able to piece together our last meals.

-Loretta will give you the names of a few women on the island that will deliver hot food to your door. Since we ran out of food by the last day, we had fried chicken, vegetables and corn bread delivered to us--what a treat! I'm actually glad we ran out of food!

-The restaurant food on the island is fair--not bad/not great. There were three restaurants open when we were there. While the food wasn't the best we've ever tasted, you certainly got a taste of the island, which was fun. Our favorite was Marshside Mama's--it had a great live band playing one night.

-The only way to get to the island is by water taxi. Based on Loretta's suggestion, we used May River Adventures. Chris was awesome. We also hired him to take us fishing one day, which was a blast.

-If your group needs to be entertained or gets bored easily, Daufuskie is probably not for you. We went during Spring Break and (at least for us) the thought of going to a crowded, busy resort with babies crying, booming music and fighting for pool chairs sounded like hell on earth to us. We wanted a place to unplug, relax and go completely off the grid. If this sounds good to you, then Daufuskie will not let you down!

It was love at first sight!

  • 5 of 5

We chose to go to the island during the off season and it did not disappoint. Between Loretta's information and other reviews we were perfectly prepared for our visit. We stopped at the dock in Bluffton and picked up our seafood at theDaufuskie Oyster company. Chris, from May River Excursions, picked us up at another dock in Bluffton and whisked us away to Daufuskie. Chris pointed the highlights along the way and brought us to the county dock. Freddie from Daufuskie Transport helped us unload all our belongings and was kind enough to take us to the ferry landing where we would pick up our friends the next day. We had been to Daufuskie once but only for the afternoon so we were not familiar with our surroundings. When we opened the front door to the cottage we were greeted by the beautiful ocean view. Whether we were sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, cooking In the kitchen or eating dinner at the table

The ocean was in front of us. The cottage feels so spacious because of its design. The split bedroom/bathroom plan provides plenty of privacy. We left our shutters open in the master so that we could watch the sunrise over the ocean. The porch was fabulous but it was a little too cool for us to use.The beds were so comfortable. Head down to Marshside Mama's for some gumbo, and explore as many dirt rods as you can. Freddie says that you can't get lost but take your map with you. We saw alligators, a bald eagle, dolphins and gifts from the sea. I could write forever. If you are a Pat Conroy fan, be sure to visit all the places you read about in The Water Is Wide.it seemed like all our connections on the island were flawless. These guys have this down to a science so that you never wait for anything. It is a slow paced island to relax and unwind.

Cottage on Daufuskie was as great as the Island!

  • 5 of 5

We visited Daufuskie in the off season and couldn't have been more pleased. Between Loretta's information and the other reviews, we were perfectly prepared for our stay. We shopped on the mainland and stopped at the dock in,Bluffton for our fresh fish. Chris from picked us up at the dock right on time and whisked us away to the county dock on Daufuskie. We were met there by Freddie who helped us unload all our belonging. Freddie was kind enough to take us to the ferry landing where we were scheduled to pick up our friends the next day. We arrived at the cottage and once we walked in the front door, we were in love with the place. The Atlantic was our front yard! The cottage is laid out so well and feels so spacious. Whether we were sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, or cooking in the kitchen, we could see the ocean. The porch was amazing but it was a little to cool to take full advantage of it but I plan to return and read my book out there. The beds were soooo comfortable. From the master you could see the ocean so we left our shutters open to catch the sunrise.. The split bedroom plan allowed plenty of privacy. Each bedroom had its own bath. We walked on the beach for hours and never saw another soul. It was heaven! We ran out of beach at Bloody Point so stopped at the clubhouse for a drink. The bartender Jason could have not been friendlier. Turns out he is Freddie's new neighbor so we felt right at home. Daufuskie is a special place and so is the cottage.

Owner's Response: Linda- Good idea to stop at the Eagle's Nest for a drink after walking that long beach. I'll try that this Spring with my now college age daughter and 7 of her friends. And yes, come back to read your books on the screened Ocean porch, hours melt away out there. Take Care of yourself, Loretta

Beautiful Cottage in a Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

If you want to disconnect from the hustle of the daily grind, look no further. Don't let the logistics of getting to the cottage deter you as Loretta will hold your hand through the whole process and have you feeling confident and prepared as you board the ferry to the amazing Daufuskie Island. She doesn't miss a beat and goes above and beyond the call of duty to make your adventure an awesome one. The cottage is gorgeous, immaculately maintained, fully stocked with everything you could ever need and in my opinion, the nicest cottage in Melrose. You will be amazed at the beauty and peacefulness of the island, no "white noise", just the sounds of nature. The locals are extremely friendly and welcoming and they are darn good cooks as well. There are only a few eating establishments but all are delicious. Marshside Mama's has a band on the weekends and everyone gathers for great food, great fun, and some really great dance moves. The wildlife is abundant making for great photo opps, you just have to keep your eyes open. Binoculars were great to have for the up close and personal views of the wildlife. The weather was quite chilly during our stay but we had done a weather check prior to leaving and came prepared and had an amazing time regardless of the chill. Exploring the island was great fun with many things to discover and lots of interesting history to learn. Daufuskie Island is a beauty to behold with a great island vibe. You know from the minute the ferry leaves the dock that you are going somewhere very unique and special. So, what are you waiting for? Contact Loretta, she really is the best!
