Gardens and Yard: There is a very large 'pasture' on the east side of the Cottage which is perfect for horseshoes or croquet (provided) or just playing catch with Fido. Yes, we do permit well-behaved dogs. There is a daylily garden surrounding two sides of the Cottage and a wall with trellises bursting with climbing hydrangeas and clematis on the north. We have a hose at the front door to wash off beach sand.
Lilac Cottage shares the property with the main house, Lavender House, homeaway.com, # 357258. The houses are on 1 1/2 acres and maintain privacy although they do share beach stairs, kayaks and beach furniture, and the beach. The bluff, with its firepit and benches and a double swing, is available to both houses, but Lavender House is limited to five renters. It is 120 stair steps to the beach, with small landings every 20 steps.
The property was well kept, house was updated but kept the cottage feel. We would come back in a heart beat! Our week stay was our honeymoon, so the only (and this is very small in the great scheme of how wonderful our stay was) was that we wished there were curtains on all the doors. There are tons of windows that let in gorgeous light, however at night we wished for more privacy on two of the window pane doors. The manager was gracious and even sent back our chromecast attachment to the TV that we accidently left behind. We love the area and since this is a tradition to come out that way, we plan to always try and stay here! Loved it!
The cottage is fantastic. To have the ability to walk down to the beach and see the sunsets from the bluff is worth every penny. The only downside is, I wished we could see the water from the cottage, but luckily for us no one was at the other house that shares the property, so we were able to have the bluff to ourselves and enjoy the view alone. It was clean and well maintained. We had a great vacation!
We found Lilac Cottage a very interesting place to stay, but we feel it needed more comfortable furniture in the main sitting room. Also sleeping in the "nook" area in the main room was rather difficult when the Freezer/fridge kept coming on through the night! Sharing the Bluff and the beach facility's with the adjoining Lavender House could be a big problem, it depends on who gets there first!
We rented the cottage as a "making memories" week with our 9 year old granddaughter. She loved her own private sleeping nook and the living space was large enough that no one felt cramped. The shady spot kept the cottage cool, even when the temperatures were in the 90's. We rarely had the air conditioning on. Tons od windows kept everything bright and cheery. Modern kitchen and appliances made cooking and clean up a breeze. The beach was huge and very private. Most days we were the only people anywhere on the beach. Trips into town to look around or down the road for pizza were easy access and short drives. Our granddaughter said she wished she lived there always! The rental did exactly what we wanted it to do...made wonderful memories she will hopefully remember forever.
We spent a gorgeous week in Lilac cottage. The place is a real treat: the house is creatively decorated and furnished, the gardens are well kept and a very pleasant sojourn with nice trees, a lot of herbs and flowers and a wonderful variety of birds.
Most amazing however is the location itself. In the morning we spent our time at the private beach and in the afternoon we used to sip our drinks on the "bluff", overlooking the Lake.
We were very happy with our friendly host Sarah, who helped us enjoy our stay at this wonderful place.
We enjoyed our stay at the Lilac Cottage. The cottage has the feel of a converted barn (although in fact it was purpose-built as a cottage). The "great room" comprises the kitchen, dining area, and a cozy sitting area, as well as a sleeping nook . The main bedroom is off the great room. The laundry room and large bathroom are off the entry way - note that the bath is not directly accessible from the bedroom, so bring a robe!
The kitchen is very well-eqipped.
The stairs down to the beach might be a bit tricky for those with balance issues, as the "railing" is just a fairly loose rope with little support. The bluff is beautiful, and there is a large open lawn where our dogs enjoyed running around. The herb gardens were lovely, and the owners encourage renters to snip whatever is needed for cooking, if you so desire.
Together, the Lilac and Lavendar Cottages would be a great place for a family reunion or intimate wedding, as they are quite close together but still provide adequate privacy for each group.
St. Joe is just 10 minutes south, and South Haven less than half an hour north, so we found this location very convenient for restaurants and shopping and sight-seeing.
We would definitely stay again. This place was a real find, secluded country living but just minutes from city amenities, and very easy access to the M-63 and I 96.
St. Joseph, Southwest, Michigan, USA (Less than 2 hours from Chicago, 6 miles north of St. Joseph, Michigan, and 30 miles north of South Bend, Indiana). The area is known for its beautiful, white sand beaches on the shores of southeast Lake Michigan, which is actually warm enough to swim in during the summer months. Most renters can't tear themselves away from our beautiful and quiet beach where they can kayak, swim, walk on the sand, or just sunbathe. But the Cottage is just down the road from the Harbor Shores Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus signature public golf course that the Wall Street Journal named one of best courses in the USA. The many wineries in the area have created a Michigan Wine Trail; some wineries have summertime jazz festivals or antique car shows. In Benton Harbor there is even a craft beer brewery,The Livery, which often has live music concerts. Many fine restaurants abound in the area. Go to the movies, either the mom and pop theater in Coloma or the multi-screen complex at Celebration Cinema off U.S. 94 in Benton Harbor. From June to October, enjoy the best local food products at the St. Joe's Farmers' Market on Saturdays. Like Art? Visit the Krasl Art Museum along the bluff in St. Joe. Or go to the Children's Museum down the block. St. Joe also sponsors free weekly band shelter concerts along the bluff. Try the Sarett Nature Center where there are several nature trails, some handicap accessible. Stop by at Waterstreet Glassworks in Benton Harbor, a public access glassblowing, beadmaking, fusing, and metalwork studio with a gallery. Next door is a gelateria operated by students at the Glassworks. Down the street is yet another artist studio building, The Studios @ 210, where you can walk through and see artists at work. Like gardens? Try visiting Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Buchanan. Want to take a short road trip? South Haven, Holland, Saugatuck and Douglas are all close and an easy drive. Or a quick shopping and sightseeing trip to Chicago is less than 2 hours away on Amtrak, leaving from the St. Joe station daily. If you desire a public beach, Silver Beach in St. Joe is very popular with its Carousel, Fountain and Butterfly House. Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor is also a fine beach with wonderful mosaics. Of course, the best activity in the area is watching the sun go down over our bluff.
There are brochures for dozens of activities, maps, and menus for local restaurants in the 'basket' at the Cottage.
