BUFFALO BUNKHOUSE

Lake Santeetlah

Robbinsville, NC

Very authentic lodge style and reasonably priced bunk house, built by a former advertising executive for Field&Stream and Outdoor Life Magazines for entertaining clients. You won't find a better deal for the dollar, that's a promise. It's like being in a lodge in Alaska or Montana!

This great little bunkhouse/lodge sits on 2 private acres of land directly across a small road from the shores of Lake Santeetlah. Visitors here will enjoy a lake and mountain view with dock access. Pontoon boats are available for rent - or trailer your own.

The bunkhouse has limited common living space indoors and is geared for folks who will spend their time enjoying all that the area has to offer and has a wonderful ground level covered porch with a rock lined fire pit and BBQ grill.

There are lots of nearby trails or head down the road to Joyce Kilmer to see one of the oldest growth forests in the east. A simple walk around the lake at East Buffalo is a good workout. A couple of cruiser bicycles are available upon your request.

There are two sets of cozy bunk beds in one bedroom, and a queen bed with another set of bunk beds in the other bedroom.

For entertaining all, there is a good supply of board games and a very large handmade dining table to accommodate everyone. There is a TV/DVD player, stereo with IPOD plug in and in/out speakers. No cable TV or phone for your maximum enjoyment away from the real world!

The kitchen is simple, but a great spot to prepare a delicious meal.

If you are a kayaker or rafter... the area boasts the Nantahala a little way down the road and the Cheoah for Class IV and V literally a hop, skip, and jump. If you are a bicyclist, Tsali can't be beat. Or check in to see what challenges Nantahala Outdoor Center is offering.

If you need to hit the road, may we recommend the challenging Tail of the Dragon or Cherohala Skyway which heads into Tennessee and rivals the Blue Ridge Parkway with every vista.

Want to take a craft class or some evening entertainment? Check out Stecoah or even John C. Campbell in Brasstown.

The number one reason to visit the bunkhouse is the incomparably beautiful Lake Santeetlah. Surrounded by Nantahala National Forest, Santeetlah offers calm. And great fishing, year round!

Want a guided fishing trip? Just let us know.

Fall Weekend

  • 5 of 5
Really enjoyed staying on Lake Santeetlah. The cabin was great, nicely furnished, clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The best part was being able to bring our dog with us and not have to leave her at a kennel. It is located close to town so we were able to pick up anything we needed and not have to hassle with packing and bringing it from home. Being a photographer the views and scenery are breathtaking with excellent hiking trails nearby. Great roads to ride bikes on too.We rented this property last week while in town for a family reunion. I would definitely recommend this house to my friends and family. It was very roomy, clean and inviting. The house is well maintained and looks just like the pictures portray. The owner was very helpful with all information. I hope to rent this property again in the future.

Smokies Paradise

  • 5 of 5
Lake Santeetlah is a secluded little jewel in the mountains of North Carolina. If you fondly remember how lakes Rabun and Burton used to be before they were discovered by the Atlanta hordes, then this is the place for you. Crystal clear waters, peaceful seclusion, great fishing and water sports...it's all here. This spot was also the best deal for the money that we could find on the lake and, while we were initially hesitant about the shared dock, it wasn't a problem at all. Do your shopping in town and you'll find everything you need to prepare meals in the kitchen and with the grill. Rustic design and furnishings make the place feel cozy. If you're looking for a nice mountain getaway where you can spend some secluded time with friends and family in a gorgeous lake setting, this is the spot for you.

Amazing gem of a lake getaway, exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5
My Friends and I needed the perfect getaway, not too far a drive from Atlanta but into the Smoky Mountains. This setting and property could not have been more perfect. The lake is pristine treasure with gorgeous mountain vistas...no wonder Southern Living placed Santeetlah on the Top Ten list! We actually felt sorry for the masses at Lake Lanier.

The rental was beautifully decorated, upscale lodge style. The owners have a real flair, and lots of vintage pieces are incorporated. Nothing cookie cutter Pottery Barn here! Every need was anticipated and uniquely met. From the kitchen outfitting to the comfy linens, one will never confuse this retreat with dull or standard. The place was immaculate, and I can be a bit OCD about cleanliness. Everything was beautifully maintained, inside and out.

The listing description is spot on...well, actually I was more than pleasantly surprised.
I can't wait to return for many more visits. I have found "my home" in the Smokies, without having to buy a second place! I am recommending to all my family and friends.

Loved Camp Buffalo

My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend. Beautiful scenery and very cool and unique cabin. A must see! Tons to see and do in the area. We'll definitely come back next year. Might try to bring a group of friends up.

A Fun Place to Stay, with a Couple of Drawbacks

  • 4 of 5
The description of this cabin is accurate. This is a cozy, fun place to stay. The dining table is huge, the decor is fun, beds are comfortable, and you can bring your dog. The kitchen is fairly well supplied. Check beforehand with the manager if you want to be sure you’ll have what you need for meal preparation. The setting is excellent for access to the great recreation opportunities in this area, and the lake is superb for swimming.

One thing not mentioned is that you have to climb 16 stairs to reach the living space, which is on the second floor. The outside seating space is very tight: the deck facing the lake is tiny—standing-room only. Two window-doors open out onto the deck, but there are no screens to keep out insects. Outside seating on the ground level is on a dirt surface and offers no view of the lake.

The owner does offer access to his dock, which sits directly in front of his house. We chose not to use the dock while the owner was in residence (3 of the 5 days we were there) because we felt we’d be on display. We found this a real disadvantage, as we had hoped to spend a lot of time swimming, fishing, and sitting next to the lake.

The manager of this place was extremely hospitable--welcoming us with fresh vegetables from his garden and frequent stops to check on us. The lake itself is heavenly, but next time we'll look for a lakefront place.

Owner's Response: Dear Deb,
We're so sorry you didn't have a better time. We've never had a complaint or a rating under 5 stars so we offered you some free nights and our manager even offered a free guided fishing trip (he's quite the angler) on his pontoon boat to try and make you happy. You declined both. Never the less, we wish you the very best and kindest regards...The Owners.

WOW! Fantastic home, location and lake.

  • 5 of 5
Let me start with, WOW! My wife and I stayed at Buffalo Bunkhouse for a weekend and it was amazing. We had never before seen this part of NC. It is very convenient to ATL, about a 3-hour drive.
The home is warm and inviting, appointed with hints of fine rustic charm and whimsy. It's clear the owners really put a lot of thought in to this home.
The beds were comfortable, the home is roomy and EVERYTHING WORKS!
The lake is convenient and we enjoyed a relaxing pontoon boat ride on Lake Santeetlah.
I was raised on a lake and I own my own lake house today, but this place -- for a weekend getaway -- is some kind of fantastic. I highly recommend it and will definitly return.
