There are many wonderful activities right at your door. Fishing in our stocked trout pond, scenic hikes, wild flowers, fossils and enjoying drives along the Rim Rd., with its panoramic views are a few ways to soak up the relaxing area.

Comfortable accommodations await you at Rancho Tonto Cabin.
The Slapnickas moved from Scottsdale to this mountain Community in 1999 to raise their two children. In addition to starting up Rancho Tonto Catch-A-Trout, a family fishing bussiness Randy & Brenda own two local restaurants. Randy also sales Real Estate for Keller Williams and Brenda is a local Yoga Instructor and Therapist.
Brenda Slapnicka purchased this cabin in 1999
The Slapnicka's discovered Rancho Tonto in the late 1990's and fell in love with this beautiful piece of property. After much consideration they decided to purchase the property which needed much work and make it into a fishing business. A place for individuals and families to come have fun and build fishing memories. The Slapnicka' renovated the property which included two homes and make one of these homes their full time residence and the other home is used as a nightly rental for all to enjoy.
Rancho Tonto is the original homestead of Sam Haught, Zane Greys Hunting and fishing Guide. A beautiful Oasis in the middle of Tonto National Forest.
The grounds and the house are immaculate. Randy was so warm and helpful. We brought our four children, ages 7 through 18, and then our parents ended up staying two nights with us as well. There was plenty of room, the beds were comfortable and well dressed, I was never rummaging through closets to find more blankets. Bathrooms and showers were great, but mostly we love the grounds, quiet away from EVERYTHING, super dark at night, right near Tonto Creek where the kids played every day. This was fun, and we will be doing this again!
Our families had such a great time at this cabin. It smelled amazing when we walked in and was very clean. The location was perfect. We had two families with five kids and we had plenty of room. The kids loved the trout pond and spent most of the time out on the grassy area playing ball. The cabin was sufficiently stocked with all that we needed. Thank you Randy and Brenda, we will be back!
Martchell and Justus families!
Let me start by saying that this is overall a beautiful property, nicely located on the Mogollon Rim (hiking trails, Tonto Creek, and lakes are all nearby), and the owners are on-site and kind folks.
Unfortunately, that is where my happiness ends. During our stay we dealt with serious pest problems inside the cabin. Several varieties of spiders living in all corners of the house...some harmless and some not so harmless. With kids in the house though even harmless spiders create tense bedtimes. Every night required a spider hunt and we killed a couple dozen spiders during the week. We also dealt with ants in the kitchen and were unable to leave packaged food on the counters or in cabinets. Our sealed food bin also became ant-infested by the end of the week. We also dealt with mice in the cabin. One dead on arrival in a trap and one that we caught when we reset the trap following a close encounter of the mouse kind one evening. The mice were nesting in the fireplace and the sofa (don't count on using the sofa sleeper unless you like mice as bed mates). Spiders also enjoy the sofas. Grandma nearly stroked out after one crawled on her while she was relaxing on the sofa.
Lastly, the wifi is non-existent. We had beautiful weather most days and there was no wifi in the guest cabin. The owners have wifi in their personal residence, but the signal is not available in the guest cabin. Also, cell service is less than half a bar inside the cabin...and that is with one of the most extensive cell networks available. We had no way of checking e-mail or looking up anything on the internet while inside the cabin.
All that said, if you are looking for a rustic getaway and don't mind sharing the cabin with nature...this is a beautiful cabin. But, if you are expecting to have a clean, pest-free cabin with some connection to the outside world I would not recommend this cabin.
The photos don't do this cabin justice. It is beautiful, cozy with great attention to detail. Just about everything you need is right there, with clear instructions for working the pellet stove, putting the trash out, etc. I had no issues with any part of the rental process. This is a very nice, private property tucked back in the woods; a great place to get away. You still have access to downtown Payson--stores, restaurants, movie theater, etc.--within a 20 minute drive if you need it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to go back!!
The Mogan Family
My family and another came here for a quiet weekend getaway and it was perfect. The cabin is so charming and clean and inviting. The pond outside provides a very soothing sound to relax to. The decor and outdoor areas and landscaping were exactly what one would want when trying to escape the city and find someplace quiet. We had easy access to trails to go hiking and our babies had an excellent time walking around the nicely manicured and BIG yards. The only two tips I would give to travelers: 1) make sure to check the map on the cabin's actual website because the address listed will bring you to the owner's home, not the cabin and 2) make sure you're OK with having people at the pond in your backyard during the day because it is open to the public.
Brenda was an absolute dream to deal with and immediately sent brochures, notes, and a letter upon reservation confirmation. We can't wait to go back soon.
