SNOW, SNOW, SNOW!!! Come enjoy our cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage is only 5 years old with like new furnishings and is very neat and CLEAN. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from shore. Icefishing is great right out in front of the cottage. Snowmobiling out your back door is also possible. Skiing, hiking, wine tasting, wildlife viewing and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a lakeside firepit for your enjoyment on those cold winter nights, but lots of stars to see. Lake Michigan is minutes away for even more fall and wintertime adventures. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your cross country skis for the miles of trails in the National Forest. If you would like or are ready for peaceful, quiet surroundings this is the place for you. It is so quiet here in the winter, you can hear the snow landing on your head! This cottage sleeps 5 and is fully equipped for your every need. It all awaits you at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake. We live on the property, adjacent to this cottage which is approximately 200 feet from the waters edge.

About Deb Hulst

I was raised on Hamlin Lake and have always loved it here. Our family came to the cottage for every family vacation, enjoying the wildlife, fishing, swimming, walks in the woods, climbing trees, feeding the swans, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire, and the list goes on and on. Now it is time to share this with others. We moved to the lake in 2000 and now live on the property year round. Your cottage is approximately 200' from the lakeshore.

Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930

Why Deb Hulst chose Ludington

Grandma and Grandpa wanted to get out of the City of Chicago in the 1930's. They summered on the North Shore of Upper Hamlin Lake several times and realized that this is where they wanted to live. When this property became available in the 1930's they jumped on it. We added the vacation rental in 2005, only beginning the rental of it in the spring of 2009.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy watching the hummingbirds in the morning, sitting on the front porch with our cup of coffee. The lake always offers beauty and entertainment, whether it be fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, or just riding in the pontoon boat to the dunes. Living on the lake year round is awesome. All seasons are fun and exciting! Snowmobiling right out our backdoor....who could ask for more! We take our winter vacation in places where it is warm, but the sunsets never come close to the beautiful colors right here in Michigan. Icefishing, too, is great on Hamlin Lake!

quick get away

  • 5 of 5
We decided to get away for the Memorial Day weekend and called to see if they had availability. They had a beautiful cabin with a wonderful view of the lake. They had a small boat we rented and fished a couple of days. We enjoyed a fire by the lake. You couldn't ask for any more secluded but still have all the comforts of home. The cabin was well supplied with everything we needed to cook and wind down. The cabin looked to be newly updated and the entire grounds were well kept up. You can tell Mark and Deb take great pride in there property. Definitely a must do again.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at our cottage. The weather was most cooperative, a little cool, but in Michigan, as they say, just wait a few minutes and it will change! Perhaps on your next visit you will be able to enjoy the lake more as well as the woods and all they have to offer. There are also many things to see and do in the surrounding little towns of Ludington, Manistee, and Scottville, depending upon the time of year. Looking forward to seeing you both again, soon!

The perfect place to recharge and let go of the city stress

  • 5 of 5
Arrived May 8th and met the owner, and immediately given the tour. All bases are covered with great detail. Cottage was immaculate and very cozy. We immediately felt relaxed and comfortable. There are so many things to do with the Nordhouse Wilderness Dunes just down the road and Lake Michigan Recreation area, also manistee and ludington are not too far as well. But with many amenities available at the cottage there is little reason to leave in my opinion. This place has it all. I enjoyed our stay so much, I am already planning the next trip and this will be the first option I'll look to when staying in the ludington/manistee area. The lakefront is beautiful, the cottage well taken care of, and most of all the owners have gone well above the bar of expectation at making sure you have everything you need to relax, sit back, and enjoy your stay. Thank you so much. It truly was the right place for us to remind ourselves what rest and relaxation is, away from the bustle of the city, the stress of our careers, and a break from the worry of uncertainty. We will be back, for sure. This is a superb place for a couples getaway.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you both enjoyed your stay at our cottage. It is a very stress free location, surrounded by nature at its best! We try to be available for questions/concerns, yet give you your space to roam about the property freely. We look forward to seeing you again!

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5
We were fortunate to get this lovely cottage last fall for a weekend getaway. It's very clean and nicely decorated and the view out over the lake is beautiful. Deb and Mark are great hosts. They were helpful and accommodating but not at all intrusive. We are looking forward to booking another long weekend this spring.

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5
This was the perfect get-a-way for my husband & I with our newborn baby, celebrating our 1st anniversary! We were lucky to be able to rent at the last minute and we're so glad we did! The cabin was very well maintained and very clean! The location is awesome, it is a bit of a drive to downtown Ludington, but it's a very pretty, scenic drive, and we weren't trying to be right downtown. We were very impressed with how much Deb & Mark truly cared about our comfort, needs & wants during our stay! We can't wait to return this summer and take advantage of the beautiful lake!

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5
Mark and Deb,

Thanks again for renting us your cottage over the Memorial Day weekend. Your place was absolutely beautiful and we were sad to leave. The cottage was just as the website had explained, perfectly kept and beautiful views of Lake Hamlin. We can't wait to visit again.

We loved it!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5
Our getaway to The Shadows was perfect in every way! The pictures do not do justice to the houses! We arrived to Deb and Mark welcoming us and showing us a beautiful, immaculate, completely updated home that overlooked a quiet, yet all-sport lake! Our 13-year-old and 17-year-old boys had a blast swimming in the lake, right off the dock, with a nice sandy bottom. It was only about 3, 4 feet deep for quite a ways out, so they could swim with no worries at all. The house had everything we could ask for ... all we brought was our own food and we were set! Since there are two rentable homes on the property, one prettier than the other, we are anxious to go back with another family and rent both homes for a longer stay and either rent or bring a speedboat to enjoy the lake to its fullest and boat over to the dunes. Thank you, Deb and Mark, for your hospitality ... you couldn't have been nicer and more helpful during our stay! We will be back!!

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed you and your family! Thank you for leaving the cottage in such good shape. There are several marinas on the lake for boat rentals and we can help you with that. Pontoon boats, some speed boats, fishing boats are all available, but need plenty of notice for summer rentals. The boys would love being pulled around on a tube or even trying to ski!! Fishing is also a great time from a boat, of course, you can catch "the big ones" right off shore here at the cottage! Looking forward to seeing you all again!
