Great property, well located, no problems, just as advertised, enjoyed our stay.
Our family of 5 had a fabulous time in Kailua Kona. The condo had every accommodation. The beds were comfortable. The condo was very roomy for 5 adults/teens. The kitchen had every amenity including bakeware, BBQ utensils, etc. Closets contained extra bedding and outdoor adventure items such as snorkeling gear, boogie boards, lounge chairs for the beach, beach towels. Very nice condo. The view from the lanai was spectacular. Even when it rained late one night, the sound from the open lanai windows was spectacular! The condo is also very centrally located. My husband and I walked into Kailua town/pier almost every morning early for coffee/breakfast. The views along the way were fantastic. Took lots of pictures! We drove all over the island. Into Hilo one day through beautiful Waimea. Drove to the beaches near Waikaloa and up to Kawi. Drove south to fantastic snorkeling beaches and my teenaged daughter even made us stop at a tie-dye shop along Hwy 11 where we all purchased a work of art! Very enjoyable vacation made even better by this wonderful condo. Would not recommend for handicapped people because there are 3 small flights of stairs. Also would not recommend for families with small children because it seems some of the resident condo owners are not very happy about having small children around. We did have one resident confront us when our teenaged son was fishing off the lava rocks directly in front of our condo. There were no signs posted that we could not fish and we even confirmed with management but she was very unhappy with us. The condo mgmt is very good about having rules posted around the complex, however. Overall, a fantastic stay for our family!
There were 21 of us all staying at the Kona Makai. Some of the condos in our group were better than others. Ours was perfect. Very clean and we'll stocked with dishes, towels, etc. my husband and I shares the master bedroom and one of our sons had one bedroom and the other took the loft. 4 of us stayed in the condo but it would have easily accommodated 8 people. We whew extremely satisfied with the accommodations. The kitchen was absolutely awesome. Lots to do in Kona. We snorkels, went to turtle bay and queen Anne's bath and drove a bit to hike down to a black sand beach. Last time we wew there we saw the volcano and visited botanical gardens in Hiio. Would not recommend this property for disabled persons since no elevator to third floor. Since the island is so big, would need to rent a car unless planning on just going into town.
It was absolutely GREAT!!! Kona Makai was a wonderfully relaxing place for a family of 5, that we would highly recommend to others. It was very spacious, had every amenity you could think of and those you would have only thought you'd have at home. The grounds we immaculate, great pool that the whole family enjoyed and having the ability to BBQ dinners by the ocean and watch the sunset was one of our favorite things to do!! The property location was perfect, we were able to go to the Farmers Market daily and be very local to all the beautiful sights of the island. There are only good things to say about the wonderful condo at the Kona Makai!! You should book your vacation today!!!
Dixon was friendly and speedy with his response to emails while providing lots of helpful tips especially as we got closer to our stay. The condo was bigger and less expensive than we've experienced in the past in Maui. The building is older but concrete/solid and very well maintained inside and out. The pots and pans were of good quality and number, there were plenty of knives, and I never once thought "I wish they had a..." while working in the kitchen. However, the blender, toaster, dishwasher and washing machine were probably meant for visiting parties of 4 rather than the use they took with our 6 (or the maximum of 8 that the condo can hold). We didn't once put on the AC as there was plenty of cross breeze with the windows open and the ceiling fans going. We also never used the drier until the last day (for sheets and towels) as there were a couple of drying racks which had the cloths ready to wear in less than a three hours. I personally liked the three story walk-up as it provided a little bit more exercise on a generally lazy vacation. I did however take a run each day and Kailua-Kona only offers street running as the properties are all right on the lava lined water fronts without any paths like in Maui. Also, the exercise room at the Kona Maki can only be accessed within the hours that the pool is open 9-9pm. Be wary, those with small children, as the pool does NOT allow swim diapers or any child under 2yr old - it would put a huge damper on your holiday if you got there and couldn't take your kid in the pool. Dolphins and the occasional whale were seen almost daily while sitting with coffee on the lanai. The close by beaches have fantastic snorkeling and sand castle building but if you want older kids activities (skim boarding, boogie boarding) then you'll need to drive 40-60 minutes each day to go up Island. For a three generation family of 6 (age range 65 - 10 y/o) we all agreed that, bang for our buck, this was a great (central) location, between northern beaches and the volcano/hiking, with all we needed - hot tub, pool, tennis, grass, snorkeling (advanced) right on the property... and very pleasant owners to deal with.
I had never been to Hawaii, and I could not have had a better experience as a first timer. The condo was everything I expected from the pictures and description, as well as very clean and well appointed, but Dixon went above and beyond. He provided me with a ton of great information about the island in terms of sights and activities, especially with our children in mind. The complex was very quiet, which is what we were looking for, though some of the residents were vocal in their opposition to renters in the complex and more pointedly, children in the pool. Regardless, we operated by the posted rules and enjoyed the pool and the lovely view from the common area as well as the lanai. The last morning there we even saw spinner dolphins from the pool deck. Location was great, close to everything and located within easy driving distance to necessary places like Costco:), also great proximity to a ton of beaches. I would stay here again without hesitation, and I would recommend it to others.
