Lush and peaceful. Ocean access at the Point, yoga in the temple, meditation and a variety of possibilities.
We spent a month on the Big Island and stayed in many different places. On the dry side we stayed in Waikoloa resort hotels and condos and then a nice hotel in Kona before we went over to the other side to a hotel in Hilo and finally ended up on the Hamakua Coast at The Historic Buddhist Temple. We were booked for 5 nights and when we first arrived felt unsure and wondered what we would do there for so long. Then the place began to work it's magic. We slowed down and began to really appreciate the quality of the space we were in...the feel of its history, how it has been lovingly restored and decorated with lovely old things that I continued to discover each day we were there, the amazing professional kitchen, the temple upstairs so wonderful a space for yoga etc etc. We enjoyed walking down to the point, learning about its history and watching the spectacular waves. We could drive into a lovely town nearby for shopping, coffees, movies and there is a swimming pool in a little town that is even closer. Hilo and Waimea are both accessible. We enjoyed the farmers market in Waimea on Sat morning. Ron sells his gelato there. His gelato is not to be missed! Unique flavours, delicious and healthy. Another highlight was definitely the hosts. They are brave and positive souls that are working hard at doing what they love. So they were inspiring as well as being as knowledgeable and helpful without ever intruding on your space. They are also fun! In short our stay was most memorable because of the place and because of them. Check out Peters review for more details.
Our family recently spent a week at the Old Jodo Temple and found it to be one of the best vacation rentals we've ever stayed in. The easy going comfort of this lovingly restored historic building is only exceeded by the warmth and friendliness of the hosts Ron and Louanne. Although they live in a separate building on the property you wouldn't know they were there unless you had a request or question. They are extremely helpful with information about the Big Island and more than willing to accommodate their guest's requests. If you have any "Chefs" in your group they will love the large well equipped kitchen. The large living and dining rooms are perfect for family gatherings. The property itself is full of amazing tropical plants and fruit trees.
The temple room on the second floor is an added bonus. We stayed over the New Years Holiday and this large open room was perfect for our impromptu New Years Eve party. The musicians in our family loved the acoustics and the dancers enjoyed the large wooden floor.
The location is about midway along the coast and ideal for exploring this side of the Big island. The temple is located just off the main road ( Rt. 19). An easy, spectacular drive down to Laupahoehoe point. It’s very private and quiet and just a short walk from the ocean, we enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore.
My family and I look forward to the next time we are able to stay at the temple and reconnect with Ron and Louanne
A 2 minute walk from beautiful and historic Laupahoehoe Point. Ron and Louanne are wonderful hosts. They are unobtrusive, but available and more than happy to answer your questions about the temple, local and Big Island destinations, and things to do. The pictures and property description are accurate. This property could easily accommodate a family group. I would definitely stay again.
My partner and I just spent two nights at the Jodo and had a great time. We loved the fact you can just walk down to Laupahoehoe Point and Park, beautiful beach and stunning sunsets. We also enjoyed driving up to Waipio and exploring. Louanne was incredibly friendly and gracious and we really enjoyed the amenities of the property. Great place to stay on the Hamahua coast.
The Jodo temple seemed like a home away from home. We were able to instantly relax and feel comfortable the minute we walked through the door. The view from all the windows was breathtaking. The sound of the ocean, the rain at night and the birds in the morning only confirmed that we were in the right place to feel refreshed and invigorated. There is so much to explore on the tropical side of the island. Laupahoehoe Point, the farmer's market and the Vanilla Company was just a start to so many other things that were off the beaten path.
Our hosts could not have been more hospitable. They were available for advice and assistance when needed and by the time we had to leave we literally felt as if we were family and ... we became especially attached to Larry Lawrence, the cat. The beautiful fresh tropical flowers that lined the walkway to the front door was a favorite detail. The homemade gelato made by the owner, well, a must!
I think we have found paradise!
I was a magical place to stay. Beautiful, from the view to the property. The location is perfect and we saw a whale on the first morning of our stay. The hosts were most gracious. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a true Hawaiian experience.
