EXCEPTIONAL! WONDERFUL HOSTS!

  • 5 of 5
The Jodo temple seemed like a home away from home. We were able to instantly relax and feel comfortable the minute we walked through the door. The view from all the windows was breathtaking. The sound of the ocean, the rain at night and the birds in the morning only confirmed that we were in the right place to feel refreshed and invigorated. There is so much to explore on the tropical side of the island. Laupahoehoe Point, the farmer's market and the Vanilla Company was just a start to so many other things that were off the beaten path.

Our hosts could not have been more hospitable. They were available for advice and assistance when needed and by the time we had to leave we literally felt as if we were family and ... we became especially attached to Larry Lawrence, the cat. The beautiful fresh tropical flowers that lined the walkway to the front door was a favorite detail. The homemade gelato made by the owner, well, a must!

I think we have found paradise!

PERFECT IN EVERY WAY

I was a magical place to stay. Beautiful, from the view to the property. The location is perfect and we saw a whale on the first morning of our stay. The hosts were most gracious. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a true Hawaiian experience.

WE LOVED IT!

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend and I stayed at this wonderful place for just two nights, but wished we could move in! The temple is gorgeous and spacious, permeated with history, beauty and comfort, and Louanne and Ron are gracious and generous hosts. We felt completely content and happy there. It's a special place.

CHARACTER HOME IN A GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
Spent three days here, and loved it. It's a very comfortable, fascinating and character filled home, decorated in a very relaxed eclectic style that delighted all seven of us. Set in lush tropical gardens (of course!), on a beautiful stretch of sparsely populated coastline. We sat out the back sipping Kona coffee, watching mongooses (hmmm - mongeese??) play on the lawn, while fat avocados (AKA 'Lunch') plopped to the ground from a monster tree. Try making a curry with local ingredients in the kitchen - awesome! We stayed at four locations on the Big Island to try to experience some of its many facets, and this was our tropical/historical bite of it. In retrospect it was a really good choice. It was a great base-camp for bush-walking - there are some excellent walks 30 mins North of the home, as well as out the back door. Its close enough to attractions North of Hilo like Waipio (tour was excellent), horse riding (also Waipio) Akaka falls, zip lining (1km ride - whoa!) and the Botanical Gardens (amazing!), so plenty to do. Even did a little snorkelling - there's a safe place at the local boat ramp - a little coral, and if you like swimming with turtles its a good spot...The roads are very good - and hey - no kangaroos! The owners are nearby if you need them, but are very respectful of privacy, and really nice - wish we'd had more time to chat. Oh, and make sure you go to the 50's Diner down the road - best hamburgers AND milkshakes I've ever had (on several continents) - and great staff too - we went back for more. Thanks heaps Ron and Louanne for making our stay so enjoyable - remember to call us if you are coming to Western Australia...

I LOVED THE TEMPLE.

  • 5 of 5
It is clean, comfortable and roomy. We all slept like babies as we listened to the rain at night and enjoyed the sunshine and clean skies in the morning. Ron is wonderful and kind and is a fabulous caterer on top of that. I couldn't ave asked for more.

OLD WORLD CHARM, MODERN CONVENIENCES, LUSH GARDEN NEAR SHORELINE PARK

  • 5 of 5
This property is utterly charming. The historic building, set in a lush tropical garden, is lovingly tended and beautifully appointed. There are many different areas within the house and outside the house so privacy can be had even with a large party. The beds were comfy and everyone slept comfortably with the sussurating sounds of the sea emanating from the shoreline below. If you want internet access, need to use a landline because your cell reception is spotty, the bases are covered. Fresh bananas? Left at the door by our hosts! The kitchen is very large and well equipped, and we enjoyed several communal meals around the dining table. Some strolled in the gardens and did yoga there in the morning, others headed for the shoreline park down the hill to welcome the day. We practiced hula dancing in the temple (we invited our charming hosts to join us, but they made themselves scarce otherwise except to welcome us and respond to any needs we had) and our biggest regret was not having more unscheduled time to spend on the premises. We were there to attend the Merrie Monarch Festival, a hula festival in Hilo, and it was a short drive away. The Old Jodo Temple comfortably accommodated our group, and we all loved it; and hated to leave. Mahalo to our hosts, who own the property and work so hard to keep it in beautiful shape, and share it with the rest of us!
