About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose Bakersville

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

Thanksgiving at the Red Roof Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I along with our son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren spent Thanksgiving week at the Farmhouse. The view is incredible and even with the cold weather there was plenty of hiking to do. The one concern of mine was trying to cook the traditional Thanksgiving dinner in unknown kitchen. I could not have been more pleased with the kitchen set up. The beds were very comfortable which is another concern when renting. We were predicted to have a heavy snow on Wed. but it only snowed in the higher elevations. We were able to drive up Hughes Gap road and get to the snow as well as the appalachian trail. We woke up to a white Thanksgiving which was fun for all. Thanks so much for providing a house that reminded me of a really nice bed and breakfast. We created wonderful family memories.

A Little Piece of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5
It was time for our mother/daughter trip. Where should we go? Well let me tell you about the treasure we found in Buladean, NC. My mother and I spent 5 nights in this beautiful home. We have even talked about making the Red Roof Farmhouse our annual vacation spot. The farmhouse was nestled on top of a hill with the most magnificent views of Roan mountain. The house was beautifully decorated and well stocked with everything you would need for your visit. Roger, the owner, was a gracious and accommodating host. He brought us homemade sweet treats during our stay and they were delicious. I can not say enough about the peacefulness of this special place. When the church bells/music began to play in the distance, we knew then that this place was a little piece of heaven. Look no further for the perfect spot. The Red Roof Farmhouse is the place for you and your family to make memories that will last a lifetime. My mother and I now refer to the farmhouse as our new home away from home! We can't wait to come back "home" next year!

Owner's Response: This mother-daughter team left the Red Roof Farmhouse as pristine clean as they found it. Seeing them enjoy the peace, quiet, and beauty of the Red Roof Farmhouse was a beautiful thing. Seeing a mother-daughter devote five days to enjoying each other to create lifetime memories was equally beautiful. I couldn't have enjoyed these two guests more! Very special people and thrilled to learn they will be back!

Great for extended adult family

  • 5 of 5
We made our first visit here for a "get away from it all" vacation with 6 adults, extended family. It was just what we wanted. Perfect for relaxing, well equipped kitchen, plenty of linens. Absolutely fully and nicely equipped. Large dining table made a great game night spot. We hiked to the overlook of nearby Roan Mountain and spotted the red roof in the distance. We will definitely plan a return visit.

We Will Be Back

  • 5 of 5
My family and I were there for 5 days and 4 nights. We live a very hectic life as does everyone these day and was look for a restful weekend. This was an amazing 5 days. Just like in the pictures we sat in the big red rockers and drank our morning coffee. The view from the front porch was of the beautiful Roan Mountain and the rushing water in the stream. Absolutely breath taking!! It was so relaxing to sit there and be surrounded by this
peaceful tranquility. While I knew there was all these great places to visit, all I wanted to do was to sit on the front porch and soak up the amazing view. My family did a day of hiking, several afternoons of fishing in the trout stream and some good old fashion conversations. There is Wi-Fi and cable but it was nice to just talk to one another. The description is accurate, the photos are accurate, the location is accurate and the Mountain Grill has amazing milkshakes and burgers. The owners was very very nice and brought us some great bakery items. You will only need to bring your groceries. My three year old son did not want to go home. We had the following ages: 59,58,32,24,22 and 3, everyone had a great time.
We will be going back.
(PS - This place was hard to leave.)

Owner's Response: These guests were dream guests and their three year old son whom I called "Munchkin" I fell in love with! Such a joy that brightened up my day just to talk to him. Hope to see these wonderful folks often!

Stunning view, charming home!!!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 5, including 3 small children, enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing stay at this cozy home. The kids had so much fun playing in the large creek, picking fresh berries in the large berry patch, and hiking in the woods. The house is spacious, with plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen is more than well equipped. We even made a blueberry cobbler with the fresh berries we picked! Yum! The view from the front porch is stunning! We spent a lot of time relaxing in the cozy rocking chairs, admiring the peaceful view of the valley and mountains, and listening to the rushing stream. The nearby town of Bakersville was quaint, and had great art galleries with a lot of unique pottery. The Mica Gallery was our favorite, and had affordable pieces to start your collection, or pick out a souvenir from your trip! Some of the artists were even kind enough to show my daughter, who is into art, some pottery tips! Jason Bige Burnett has a great gallery there too, and took 20 minutes out of his studio time to show his technique to my 7 year old daughter. Very friendly people! And don't forget to eat lunch at Dot's Coffee shop while you're there! Don't miss dinner at Knife & Fork in Spruce Pine. We ate there twice, it was that good. All farm fresh, local food, unique, ever changing menu. They even accommodated the kids. Definitely take a day trip to Asheville as well. Both Old Biltmore Village, and downtown make for a great day trip. Lot's of shopping and delicious, diverse restaurants such as; Rezaz, Salsa, French Broad Chocolate Lounge, Chai Pani, and much more. There are plenty of other areas to visit within a one hour drive such as Banner Elk, and Roan Mountain State Park, which has a large, clean pool. If you want to stay near the house, the Mountain Grill is just one minute away, and serves yummy burgers & fries, and delicious shakes in any flavor imaginable! We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at the Red Roof Farmhouse! It was sad to leave. Our littlest one even cried when we had to leave, she loved it that much! We definitely recommend this charming home to anyone wanting a relaxing, peaceful mountain vacation.

Owner's Response: So happy this wonderful family got to enjoy the fresh blueberries - raspberries and blackberries ripen soon. Also so glad they got to explore and enjoy the magnificent and fun galleries closely.
Knife and Fork is so good, and they got to visit twice! Yumm!

Great time with family

We've rented in the NC Mountains before and by far this is our favorite place. Very comfortable for everybody and a beautiful high view of the whole area. Outstanding fishing and not too far out from town. We will be renting again for sure.
