Kululani is a brand new gated community surrounded by the World Class Mauna Lani Professional Golf Course, just a twenty minute drive from the Kona airport. Our beautiful luxury 2-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom town home sits on the Kohala Coast recognized as one of the finest locations on the island. Mauna Lani/Kulalani is a well planned and welcome retreat from the suburban sprawl of Kona.
The Home: Our home sits on the highest point of the lushly landscaped-community, within view of the extensive pool complex, but with enough distance to avoid traffic and noise. Views from the home include Mauna Kea Volcano, the Kohala Coast, and Maui. Inside we have taken great care to decorate capturing a rich blend of texture, color and style characteristic of Pacific Rim culture. Mixing modern contemporary styles gives the space a vibrant rich atmosphere, while also providing a warm comfortable environment to relax in. Our unit has all the upgrades, but we took that a step further to increase the quality and comfort of our home. We replaced all main light and ceiling fan controls with LED-dimmer and speed controls, so you can easily adjust the light and temperature to any mood that suits you. Of course the home is also fully air-conditioned should you need it. The downstairs includes the Kitchen, Dinning Room, Living Room, Entry, Powder Room, Laundry, and Garage. The kitchen is wonderfully spacious and outfitted with everything you expect in a gourmet kitchen. Next to the kitchen is the dinning room, which features a large table that can seat up to ten, and is a great space for playing games. Our living room was set up for maximum relaxation, the perfect place to end an active day. Sink into the deep roomy couch and watch a movie, or just grab a book and play some music. Just outside the dining room is a covered lanai, which features a built in Viking grill, wet bar and granite counter. Perfect for grabbing a morning coffee, or grilling the catch of the day at night.
Moving up stairs you’ll find the Master Suite and the Guest Room. The great thing about this home is all the bedrooms are upstairs, so anything happening down below will not interfere with a good night’s sleep. The master suite is a huge space with a large California king bed, a nice little office, a deck with a double chaise, plenty of closet space, and a fully appointed bathroom. The bath has a private water closet, walk-in-shower, Jacuzzi tub for two, and double sinks. From the Master Suite deck you can view 4 separate fireworks displays simultaneously during July 4th and New Years. The guest room has a queen size bed, plenty of closet space, and its own private bath. For each room we have chosen the finest linens and provided all the bathroom amenities you would find in any luxury hotel. The rooms are also located at opposite ends of the house, so privacy is very good.
Kulalani Community: Just a short walk from our front door is a beautiful expansive pool complex. Inside the gate you will find the main pool, lap pool, two hot tubs, gym, and cabana. This facility is much like that of neighboring luxury hotels, but without the crowds. The main pool’s large organic shape provides for plenty of space. This pool, with attached children’s pool, hot tub, and its own bathroom facilities is perfect for family activity. Chaise lounges, tables, and grassy areas can be found all around its expanse. On the other side of the pool complex is the lap pool and gym. This area is meant for adults only, and provides a calm removed retreat. The gym is outfitted with high quality cardio, circuit training, and free weight equipment. Bathroom facilities are attached including lockers and showers. Behind the gym sits the second hot tub with a yoga platform. Between the main pool and the lap pool sits the Cabana. It is the centerpiece of the complex housing preparation, grilling, and covered dining; complete with sinks and refrigerator. Next to it is a huge lawn perfect for frisbee, or a game of catch.
The Resort: Golfers enjoy access to the Mauna Lani Golf Club, as well as many other local courses. Beach goers will love the world-class white and black beaches within a short drive; perfect for swimming, snorkeling, scuba, surfing, boogie boarding or just lounging in the sun. Those on foot can discover miles of trails winding through nearby ancient Hawaiian fishponds, historical sites, and the very roads ridden by those competing in the World Famous Ironman. Those seeking adventure can explore majestic Kilauea Volcano by foot or in the air, swim with dolphins and visit the historic monument to Captain Cook, catch the annual migration of the humpback whales, explore the many coastal inlets and hidden beaches in a kayak, horseback ride on the largest ranch in the United States, or take in some of the best sport fishing in the world. For those in the mood to shop or dine you are minutes away from the island's most upscale collection of boutiques and eateries. You will also find groceries at our local Foodland Farms gourmet market. Our private Mauna Lani Beach Club boasts one of the finest beaches on the Big Island with some of the best snorkeling around. While you’re there, you can indulge in casual beach fare and cocktails at The Beach Club Restaurant and Bar.

Kim and Gregg spend most of the year working and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are a youthful couple that have a passion for living and enjoying the company of family and friends. Hawaii is truly our second home; a special place where we have shared many memories together. So special in fact that it was our first choice when deciding where to marry. Its magical quality and restive spirit has always been an oasis to our busy lives, so it was a natural choice when considering a home away from home. Hawaii gives us a location close enough for easy travel, yet removed enough to let go and truly relax. Our love of the outdoors and our passion for great food is more than satisfied with what the island offers. We wanted to have an upscale experience with the kind of freedom we enjoy in Sausalito; something no hotel could offer. Mauna Lani/Kulalani gave us all that and more, and we couldn't be happier. Like most, we like to live our life our way, and what way could be better than having all the control in our hands. A home gives us the freedom to enjoy our time privately, or with others. In the end it's our choice, and with any holiday, choice is the most valuable asset.

Our stay at Kim and Gregg’s condo has been so pleasant that we are sad to have to return to cold Boston weather. The condo is beautifully decorated and has just about everything one needs to feel at home. It truly is like a “home away from home!” We look forward to returning here in our future trips to the Big Island!! We always find feedback on things to do and places to eat helpful so we hope the following will be helpful to other guests:
1. Daytrips & Adventures: If you enjoy walking/hiking – the Volcano Park is also wonderful. It’s about a 3 hour drive along scenic Rt 19 to Rt 11 in Hilo. Then allow at least a couple hours for touring – longer depending on length of trails. En route to the Volcano Park, the Mauna Loa Mae Nut Plantation on Rt 11 might also be a good visit (we got there 15 minutes before closing so did not do touring of factory, but bought quite a lot of nuts!
2. Beaches: The beach at Mauna Lani Resort is very beautiful, but small sand area (we visited at sunset but did not swim there). It’s a beautiful area for pictures at sunset.
Mauna Kea also has a beautiful small sand beach, but parking is very limited so go before 9AM or after 3PM.
Hapuna State Park Beach is very popular. Large sand beach that is great for swimming and riding waves. Parking fills up quickly by 10:30AM or 11AM.
Spencer Beach is smaller than Hapuna with calm waters so it’s great for families with young children. All beaches are within 5-10 minutes drive from the condo.
3. Dining: We stocked up on basics from Foodland Farms and Jarmen’s Market (next to Blue Dragon Restaurant in Kawailae) for breakfasts and some dinners, but we also enjoyed dining at the following:
Manta at Mauna Kea was EXCELLENT. This was our favorite restaurant. The salads of heirloom tomatoes and shaved fennel were fresh and delicious. Our entrees, Nairage and Ahi were wonderful and our chocolate soufflés with crème anglaise were the best we ever had. We booked too late for a sunset dinner but we heard that is highly recommended.
Zest in Hawi was a special discovery on our last day. The ahi salad was a delicious starter and special braised pork with polenta and lasagna were terrific. Everything made on premise and prices were very reasonable – But do note that Zest accepts cash only.
Browns at Fairmont Orchid was also wonderful for special dining. Their mixed drinks were great and the entrees of surf and turf (filet and lobster tail) and ahi tuna were wonderful.
