Five grandchildren, ages 5 to 18, and four school systems, locales ranging from Colorado to Georgia to South Carolina to the mountains of Western North Carolina. For the first time in years, all our spring breaks coincided, providing a rare opportunity for a family vacation. Everyone wanted to do something "big," and Hawaii was the first choice. When we asked friends and relatives who were either residents or former residents of Oahu, where we should stay, they all recommended the Kailua area and nearby Lanikai Beach, reputedly one of the world's most beautiful. After checking out several vacation rental sites, we all agreed that this house would provide the ideal space for our family group and that the furnishings and surroundings were both luxurious. When we arrived, we were not disappointed. In fact, the photographs on the web site didn't do justice to the house, pool, and gardens. Everything was clean and meticulously organized, and the thoughtful housekeeper had provided enough coffee to get us rolling on our first morning, hastening the recovery from a 10-hour nonstop flight. The owner was lovely to deal with--responding quickly to questions about the house and the area--and the pool caretaker and gardener were most considerate, the former quickly responding to a question about pool temperature and the latter taking care to work efficiently around our activities. The location of the house couldn't have been better--supermarket and shopping 10 minutes away, Costco 25 minutes, easy walk to the beach and easy drives to others nearby. The house was truly perfect for us; since we didn't have nearly enough time to explore Hawaii, we hope to return--and the house on Lanipo Drive would again be our first choice of residences.
