Nestled just outside scenic Sackets Harbor, NY on Lake Ontario, Duck Soup Cottage is the ultimate vacation getaway for rest and relaxation.
Drive through our beautiful woods to our secluded rustic cabin on an eastern back bay of Lake Ontario. Located just outside of historic Sackets Harbor New York.
This has been our casual family 'camp' for over 30 years. It has 300' of waterfront with a 15' dock. Bring your medium to small size boat, or we have a canoe and kayak. You can row out to the surrounding islands to swim.
We love to bird watch here. Many Blue Herons, ducks and sometimes a pair of bald eagles are nesting on the property. We have a pair of white swans that come back very year. Kids will love to fish off the dock. If you have a boat, it is a great place to fish.
There are 3 bikes available to use as well.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, this is the place for you! We packed up our kayaks, motorcycles, and hammocks and headed up to Sackets Harbor. This place, right on the lake, was ideal for all of the above.
It is an older home, but if you want a newly renovated home on the lake, you will pay much more. The place has great ventilation with sliding doors, screened in porch, and many windows. We were only a party of two, so we did not use the upstairs, but you could easily sleep eight in this place. Water pressure was low in the showers, but not problematic. The owner is very accessible if you run into any problems.
All in all, it was a little slice of heaven. The best was eating dinner on the screened-in porch over looking the lake and being FAR removed from neighbors, traffic, and noise.
Booking was very simple, and the communication from the owners was prompt and friendly. You can tell how much they love their house and love sharing it with others. After driving off the highway for what seemed to be several miles, you turn into a little forrest. About a mile further you see the cottage on the left. It's set back from the road and has a clearing in the front that overlooks Lake Ontario - it was beautiful. We had to take in the scenery of the lake before even going inside! The house was clean and neat - comfortable furniture, but not too fancy - just how we like it. There were 6 of us and we were able to divide the bedrooms up easily. Some are downstairs and some are upstairs. Both areas have adjacent bathrooms. The kitchen, while not brand new, was clean and there were lots of dishes, pots, pans, silverware, etc for us to use. We learned that Watertown was about a 15 minute drive and there were plenty of places to buy food and supplies right on the edge of town. Nearer, in Sackets Harbor, was a smaller mom-n-pops IGA that had plenty of food and supplies as well. We made a few trips to both places when we needed to stock up. We grilled outside a lot, too. The grill was ready for us when we arrived (gas, clean, etc). The beds were clean and comfortable. It was easy to sleep as it's SO quiet - almost too quiet for us city-dwellers! The bathrooms were fine/simple (and good hot water, too!). We relaxed both indoors and out, even taking the canoe and bikes out a few times. At night we ventured into Sackets Harbor and ate at a few of the restaurants and went to the SH Brewery almost every night. Friendly locals and great beer. I will definitely come back next year! Great for couples, groups of friends, and families alike. So glad to have found this gem!
First 3 hours were spent cleaning - cobwebsand spider webs everywhere inside and out. Couldn't go anywhere in the house without running into them - dirty floors as well. Toilets leaked so we had to put towels down to sop up the water. Showers were clogged with hair and grime. Once we cleaned up the house and the surrounding area it was very pleasant layout - ample and comfortable sleeping space - 4 bedrooms and single beds in the loft. Nice view as well.
Water is a huge problem - Sulfer water that was very strong in oder made showering unpleasant - plus it tarnished jewelry and turned my wifes hair a bit Orange. Dishes and glasses needed to be washed as they carried an odor as well. Some of the pots and pans were severely rusted. Screens in screened in patio and house had large holes - one upstairs bedroom had so many bugs coming in the screen the window had to be closed - not so nice when its 85 degrees and no A/C.
Canoe and Kayak were awesome and much enjoyed - also had fishing poles and bikes which we didnt use but were available - fire place was very nice and came in handy on the one cool night we had.
All in all - this home has great potential but needs a lot of TLC includign replacing rotting wood around the house and hitting up the paint brush in a few places. It is a shame - wouldnt take much and this would be getting 5 stars.
A comfortable home, nice to have a "master" bedroom with bath separate from the other two bedrooms. we brought kayaks and could launch them from the shore. very quiet. great views. A good kitchen (my advice is always bring your favorite kitchen items - we wish we had brought our electric griddle, but it is not reasonable to expect a kitchen with all the things you are used to at home.
Sackets Harbor is a lovely village with many nice restaurants. You are close enough to a Hannafords, Target, et. al if that is important, but not so close you know they are there. If you forgot something at home, you are in luck.
Close to Westcott State Beach for good lake swimming. There are swimming beaches you can reach by kayak or small oared boat. The water in Muskellunge Bay is quite shallow.
Great views from the deck. Really quiet during the week. Just the sound of some house building one day.
Do bring your drinking water.
All in all, it exceeded our expectations.
A great week with the family.
If I write too many more nice things, well, you won't believe me.
This lovely 2 story cottage was a nice place to stay with my family. It is a few miles down the road around the corner from Sackets Harbor 15 minutes from Watertown. There are plenty of beds and bathrooms. Bedrooms upstairs and downstairs. Master Bath is off the Master Bedroom. Large living room with comfortable furnishings - Very relaxed. Plenty of seating. 2 Lofts are great for a retreat for the kids.
Kitchen is small, however, it has any gadget or amenity needed and plenty of pots and pans for cooking.
Love the deck overlooking the lake and there is a screened in porch off the master.
There is a dock leading to the lake and we loved the canoe. There are no life preservers, so bring your own for children and non-swimmers. The lake is beautiful with many water birds and the entire area was very quiet when we were there. Very wooded area and enjoyed walking along the gravel road leading to the cottage along the lake. The fireflies were absolutely magical at night.
The only drawback is the faucet water comes from a well and has a strong sulfur odor. I am unsure if it was treated with chlorine (I think I detected chlorine the first couple days) therefore that may account for a yellowish coloring. The owners do have a fresh drinking water cooler that takes 5 gallon containers which can be purchased from the grocery. Linens were extra for rent. The cottage was clean, but not sparkling clean. Lake living includes dirt, so spiders, bugs, and dirt can be expected.
We enjoyed the Sackets Harbor Brew House in the village for dinner and brew, delicious but a little pricey. Couldn't beat the $2 pints between 5 and 7 on July 4th!
Located in beautiful Upstate New York on Lake Ontario. Approximately 70 miles from Syracuse Airport. 8 miles from Watertown Airport (very tiny airport).14 miles from downtown Watertown, lots of shops and a mall. 65 miles from Canadian border by car. 40 miles from the Thousand Islands.
