DRAMATIC ARCHITECT-DESIGNED WATER-FRONT HOME ON LAKE GARFIELD

Monterey House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4 comfortably)

Charming, sunny and airy three-story home on beautiful Lake Garfield. Open loft-like space provides a unique 'tree-house' experience. House comes fully furnished and includes satellite TV as well as use of solo kayak, two-seater canoe and Sunfish sailboat.

Guests enjoy south-facing lake access, and enjoy all-day sunbathing on 30-foot dock. Naturally wooded environment with hundred-year old hemlocks, mountain laurel and other native species, provides privacy and contributes to no-weed swimming.

Property features two outdoor decks for lounging or watching sunsets. Enjoy al fresco dining on upper deck with an outdoor refrigerator, charcoal barbecue grill, table, chairs and umbrella. On chilly Berkshire evenings, relax next to the home's wood-burning fireplace, located in the living room. House is close to the Monterey sandy and lifeguarded town beach, popular with families, as well as the beloved general store, which serves breakfast and lunch and provides free wireless Internet access.

Just a short 15-minute drive away take advantage of fabulous restaurants and shopping in Great Barrington and other picturesque communities, including Housatonic, Lee (location of Prime Outlets), Lenox and Stockbridge.

In addition to the master bedroom with queen-size bed there are two bunk rooms each with a twin-size bed as well as a full-size, pull-out futon bed in the living room area. The property's 'house book' describes local attractions, activities and eateries. Click on website link for more photos and information.

We fell in love with Lake Garfield and the Berkshires. It's so easy to get to Moore Cottage from both New York and Boston. And Berkshire County is an amazingly rich area, historically, culturally and recreationally.

Moore Cottage is close to many cultural activities, including Jacob's Pillow, the Norman Rockwell Museum and Tanglewood. It's fifteen minutes from Great Barrington and Lee; 20-25 minutes from Stockbridge and Lenox, all of which offer fine (and ethnic) dining, interesting shops and boutiques and great opportunities for hiking (including access to the Appalachian Trail in Monterey and Tyringham), walking, boating and fishing.

A beautiful refuge in the treetops by the lake

My partner and I spent a week at this enchantingly unique cottage, and are planning to return next summer. It makes ingenious use of its steep and dramatic site, offering stunning views of the lake from every level while maintaining a comfy and welcoming aura. Photos don't really do it justice. The wooded surroundings offer seclusion, and the lake itself is clean, clear, and beautiful. It was sheer bliss to sit by the fireplace in the evenings. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the top terrace is a perfect place to enjoy lunch or dinner from the charcoal grill.

Just two caveats: this is a very vertical property, so if stairs are a problem, you might look elsewhere. And the two side bedrooms, with loft beds, are most suitable for children or adults under 5'7", though the futon couch in the living room is very comfortable. In any case, this place is a true gem.

Owner's Response: Good news! In the fall of 2013, we removed each of the twin-size loft beds from their elevated "nook" positions in the bunk rooms and converted them to twin-size platform beds (no more ladders!) AND installed bi-fold doors for added privacy. :)

Returning family of 4

We have come to view this cottage as our home away from home, without any of the responsibility of a homewner! It's a lovely, quiet, well-built and comfortable vacation cottage for our family of 4. Very convenient location, lots of places to walk, good swimming and boating, nice community in Monterey. Incredible views from inside the house and on the deck/dock. Highly recommended.

Still dreaming of our time here

Moore Cottage was everything described and so much more magical. It was the PERFECT July lake front getaway. I'm in love with this property and location. I hope to go back this fall if my schedule allows. The owners were kind and responsive from the initial reservation through our entire stay (via the incredible house book they created). I happily recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful, beautiful getaway.

A couple of helpful hints: the cottage sleeps four comfortably. Two in the master bedroom (btw the view of the lake from this room is stunning), one person each in the bunk rooms. There is not room in the bunk rooms for an air mattress on the floor. You CAN sleep six with two people on the futon in the living room which is what we did, but if it's rainy there is not enough common space for everyone to "lounge". The kitchen dining and outdoor dining is also better suited for 4 than 6. We found everything we needed for preparing meals - dishes, plates, glasses, cookware, utensils - and ate every meal at the house (mostly outside). The oven is European sized and the temperature temperamental - recommend cold desserts or hit the bakery. The fridge is apartment size, we filled it up quickly and had to store some things in a cooler with ice packs. I'm midwestern originally and live in Brooklyn, I tend to go overboard at big grocery stores. . . The Big Y in Great Barrington is great and offers good deals if you use their loyalty program - the silver coins especially.

The bathroom is small, better for 4 people than 6. My only complaint is that the shower and bathtub could use some updating/attention.

The lake is the cleanest most beautiful lake I have ever seen outside of Minnesota. The water is crystal clear. Bring floaties as it is about 6' deep a the end of the dock. There are floaties at the house, but we bought more. The hammock tucked away just above the lake was ideal for afternoon reading and naps.

Moore Cottage is a very special location, with great character, and beautifully maintained with a lot of love.

Also...In the fall of 2013, we removed the old tub/shower combo and installed a brand-new, re-tiled two-person-size glassed-in shower with modern fixtures! :)

We had the opportunity to rent this property last minute for a weekend getaway. I could not be more pleased with our decision. My husband and I had a wonderful time at Moore Cottage. Lake Garfield is absolutely beautiful, and clean! Furthermore, the owners are a pleasure to work with. We hope to be back again in the future.

My husband and I spent our 20th anniversary at this house and it was wonderful. It is a charming, unusual home and we were very comfortable there. The house is on a beautiful lake and its location is close to all the Berkshire attractions. We plan on renting this house again in the future.

The Berkshires have been a popular vacation destination since the Gilded Age, when 19th century 'cottages' (i.e., mansions) were built as second homes by wealthy East Coast families. It's an area rich in history, culture and recreational opportunities for the whole family.
