A PERFECT VACATION GET-AWAY

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Hau Tree Beach House in October. I can't think of anything that would have made our stay better, except maybe a turtle or two on the beach, but there was a protected sea turtle area several beaches down. The October surf was starting to attract surfers - we watched them all day long from the porch right over the beach, where we also ate all our meals, including candle lit dinners. We swam & snorkeled in the little bay in front, protected by a reef. Snorkeling was OK, not great.
As opposed to the previous unhappy reviewer, we found the place very clean, nicely stocked with food staples & linens. Things were simple - what you'd expect at a family beach cottage. The caretaker was discreet when he used the laundry, entering from the outside door, keeping the door locked into our cottage. We finally found the Wi-Fi -(house to the left), but til then, went to the Coffee Gallery in Haleiwa. The Farmer's Market in Haleiwa (Sunday?) gave us ample local foods. Two large grocery stores supplied the rest.
We loved the low-key atmosphere - no condos, hotels or high rises (except Turtle Bay Resort 1/2 hr away - gated community with fancy restaurant). There were a number of local hikes and gardens, as well as famous surfing areas. Local restaurants were OK - nothing special, but nice to get out.
I'd recommend this as a quiet get-away, or for small families. The swimming area was protected - great for little kids. Less than an hour from the airport, it will be easy to return to! Mahalo!

2ND TRIP HERE AND CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK FOR #3

2nd Trip here and can't wait to come back for #3
  • 5 of 5
This year we chose to stay at the Hau Tree house for 2 weeks instead of 1. I am at home (In Alaska) pining for it as I write this. I have stayed at quite a few places in Oahu and nothing beats staying here. It is the most relaxing, welcoming, beautiful place I have stayed and the porch is calling my name. I just wanted to write this because as I had read the 1 negative review of this place it just makes me laugh out loud at how ridiculously wrong the review is. The owners of the place are fabulous and do everything to make it wonderful. Everything the reviewer said was absolutely wrong. The place is immaculate, the internet worked just fine, and the neighborhood felt extremely safe. I walked all around it every night. I just wanted to write this because that review was so misleading but.....if truth be told, I really don't want the Hau Tree to get too many renters (lol). We need it for Christmas next year too!

TWO WEEKS IS JUST NOT ENOUGH!

  • 4 of 5
We highly recommend the Hau Tree Beach House for your next Hawaiian vacation. It's not fancy, but oh, so comfortable. The yard is beautifully maintained, the cottage clean as a whistle. Family meals were taken under the Hau Tree on the patio where the lights were a nice addition since our last visit and lent a festive atmosphere to our gatherings.

Trish, one of the owners was wonderful to work with while making our reservation and while at the cottage.

While there, from the front porch, we saw breeching whales, and an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal visited our beach for a day. Several beaches down, there were large sea turtles, but right in front of the cottage we saw dozens of smaller ones in the water.

A short drive south is the historic town of Haliewa with it's great shops and restaurants. Don't pass up the rice bowl breakfast at Breakers! Drive north and visit the Polynesian Cultural Center. The 7 PM show is amazing!

You can't beat the cost for what this place delivers. We will definitely be back.

WHAT AN AWESOME STAY

  • 5 of 5
First let me say that this house is what a beach house should be. I read a lot of reviews about the view from the porch. We could hardly pry ourselves away from it in the mornings and at night. We watched surfers while drinking coffee and then out to the beach everyday. The protective cove was fabulous for our kids who snorkeled and swam in it everyday. The house had beach toys, chairs, plenty of towels, sunscreen and etc... We hardly had to buy anything but the few things we did, we left for the next guests. I thought the beach area was one of the best because you could walk down to a main beach where lots of surfers and swimmers were and then back down to our own private beach.
The picnic area under the Hau Tree was also doubled as the game area. Having a washer and dryer was great and the house came stocked with everything we needed. It was also very comfortable.
Our friends stayed in the small cottage and that worked out great. They had privacy if they needed it but we all mainly hung out on that porch. The views everyday were beautiful. We saw a humpback one day.
Town was only a 5 min. drive and was fun just to walk around and window shop or to eat out. We will be returning next year if possible. It gives us Alaskan's something to look forward to during our long winters.
Thanks for sharing your place with us Trish.

PARADISE FOUND

  • 5 of 5
As soon as we stepped foot onto the property, we knew that our week was going to be something special. This property is pure paradise.

This humble cottage is located on the most amazing beach. Public access to the beach is very limited, so basically the only people on the beach are from the adjacent houses. Our kids really enjoyed playing in the water which was somewhat protected by the nearby reef.

The outdoor table under the Hau Tree and pergola (which is adorned with fairy lights) was a perfect place for lunch and dinner.

The actual house and cottage are simple, but very clean and well equipped with everything that you could possibly need. The grounds are immaculately maintained.

We really enjoyed being close to all the action of the North Shore, but yet away from the congestion of Pipeline and Sunset. In my opinion, the Hau Tree Beach House is the best kept secret on the North Shore. Shhhh don't tell anyone!!!

FABULOUS BEACH COTTAGE

  • 5 of 5
This is a lovely beach cottage in a wonderful location. Our first impression when we walked in was how clean it was - white wood walls and ceilings, which gave it a real beach-feel. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed (pots, pans, utensils, and even a blender!), there were plenty of linens and towels (even beach towels!), there was a new, large TV (which you don't see in the photos), and the washer/dryer seemed very new (worked great!). Even the bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable (the master was the coolest room in the house - great for sleeping!). The best feature, though, was the **amazing** view.

Every evening we sat on the porch watching the ocean (we saw dolphins and sea turtles), and enjoyed amazing sunsets and rainbows. The beach directly in front of the house was rocky (could be seasonal), but just a few feet to the right was a lovely sandy, private beach with small waves and no current, so we felt safe letting our kids play in the ocean (we weren't worried about them getting pulled too far out). There was an outdoor shower which we used a lot after our day at the beach.

Foodland market (chain) was just down the street, so we also enjoyed BBQing meals (BBQ and charcoal were provided) and eating outdoors at the huge picnic table which was located under a separate covered patio. The house had boogie boards, a kayak, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, beach mats, and so much more. The house has 2 bedrooms/1 bath and there's also a guesthouse (1br/1ba) on the property, but the guesthouse was not rented out during our stay, so the property felt very private.

The historic town of Haleiwa is just a few minutes down the street - we enjoyed shopping and eating at the restaurants there (Cholo's mexican restaurant, Breakwaters, and Cafe Haleiwa - all were very good), and, of course, enjoyed the local shaved ice.

The house is on a private road that parallels the main highway (Kam Hwy), which was a nice feature, since many of the houses in the area are located directly on Kam Hwy. We did hear traffic noise at night, but if we closed one of the two bedroom windows, we were able to shut out most of it.

The Dole Plantation maze was fun (take water!). If you go to the public beaches, arrive early since parking lots are very small and fill up early.

Note: the photos on this website just don’t show you how clean and adorable this house really is.
