About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Roger Jenkins chose Bakersville

Having grown up as a child nearby, when this property came up for sale, I quickly bought it. Because of my work, I have been privileged to travel all over the world, but have found no spot as beautiful as these mountains and streams here in Buladean.

What makes this cottage unique

- Minutes from Appalachian Trail

- Walk across street to have access to trophy trout stream with beautiful brook, rainbow, and brown trout.

- 10 minutes from rafting and water tubing.

- 30 minutes to Roan Mountain State Park with swimming, tennis, fishing, hiking, picnic'ing'.

- 30 minutes from the top of Roan Mountain - with the world's largest natural display of rhododendron.

-30 minutes from Penland School

- one hour from skiing at Beech and Sugar Mountains in Boone and Blowing Rock.

- one hour from Biltmore House in Asheville

- peaceful, quiet, and wrapped in natural beauty.

We had a great vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the summer of 2014 (the exact date I gave is an estimate), and it was quite an enjoyable stay. The house was clean and cozy, everything worked, and had no problem finding it.

We spent most of our days away, and the cottage make a good jumping off point to see many of the attractions of the mountains, many are close to an hour away, but that's country living for you. The creek on the other side of the road is lovely, and the deck makes an enjoyable spot to spend a hour just watching the falls.

Roger was great about recommending places to go, and the burger place up the road was fantastic. He also suggested where I should go fish, and the little creek produced a 21 in rainbow for the efforts, and a 18 inch brown.

We visited Linville falls, Grandfather mountain, the rhododendron park, among other things. The Linville caverns were kind of a fun, albeit a bit pricy.

The only down sides would be 1 bathroom, which really wasn't a big deal, even with three children. And you are very far from most anything, bring food with you, because the nearest grocery store is about 40 minutes away. But if you want some quiet time, it is very nice.

Thanks for the stay Roger!

Owner's Response: So happy these folks had such great luck on the trout stream - even catching a huge 18 inch brown trout! The single bathroom is why I rent the Cottage so cheaply compared to other rentals nearby. There is a country grocery store less than a mile away that has most things one would need - but the renter is correct, if you want an Engels, Krogers, or Publix - they would be about 20 miles away. Most folks make one large shopping trip for groceries there, and then fill in with bread, milk, eggs, etc. at local country store.

Our 3rd stay at the Toobie Hole..just what the doctor ordered !!

  • 4 of 5

Our 3rd year spending the kids spring break at the Toobie Hole cottage was wonderful! We spend the whole year looking forward to getting away to this peaceful slice of heaven. There are so many things about this place that we love. 1. The absolute peace and quiet. The only noise is the sound of the water bubbling in the creek out back.

2. The cottage is so comfy. Stocked with everything we need...feels like home.

3. The DECK. We spend hours and hours every day sitting on the deck reading while our kids play in the creek. I cannot say enough about this...I daydream about sitting on this deck all year! There is a sweet donkey next door in the field. If you go to the fence and call "scruffy", he will usually come running. He's so gentle that my kids feed him and rub him.

4. Roan Mountain. After a few days of decompression at the cottage, we love to head up to Carvers Gap and hike the Appalachian Trail. We take a kite and a picnic. Gorgeous views.

5. The owners are so nice and helpful. Each time we've been there, Roger has brought over treats like homemade apple butter and scones.

Tips...bring all your groceries with you. You will not find a large grocery store nearby.

Bring water shoes, nets for catching critters, small floating toys (put them in at the top of creek and catch at bottom in net), sunscreen, kite, board games, a jacket for the top of Roan bc it's cold and windy.

So, if you want to getaway from it all and have some peace and quiet...you can't go wrong at the Toobie Hole. I hope you fall in love with this place like our families has!

Delightful!

What a wonderful place to stay! We needed a place nearby Bakersville to visit my brother's family for the holidays. My parents, my son and I stayed very comfortably in this house, including sharing the large bathroom! The cottage is decorated so beautifully and everything we needed was there. Some of the nicest touches were that basics such as toilet paper, paper towels, clean towels, hand soap and dish soap were there when we arrived after dark on 12/30. My dad is quite the chef and he found everything he could want or need in the great kitchen. The fabulous dining room table allowed 5 adults and 2 kids to have great family meals!

The outside is just wonderful even in December. The deck over the creek/waterfall was my 5 year old son's favorite - as we loaded the car to leave he went back "to say goodbye to the waterfall". Lots of yard/running around space for kids and we'd definitely come back when the weather is nicer for outside time! Thanks so much for making our family holiday time comfortable and fun!

so grateful

This place is spectacular! Where do I begin... if you don't pick this place, you're regret it. It's a winner. The peace of God really rest in this place. It's amazing and beautiful. We enjoyed Grandfather's Mountain, Bakersville town, and Gem mining. My husband enjoyed that the most, we actually found some great precious stones. The beds in this home are amazing, they have paid attention to every detail. The home is equipped with everything you need. It felt like home. The scenery and views are incredible. Things are about 40 mins away, but the drives are so beautiful you don't mind. Small grocery store 1 mile away. We hope to come back here again. My husband is a jazz musician and he definitely felt inspired here. Great place for writers or artist. Www.kennethcarrmusic.com

Our Favorite Mountain Getaway by far!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here over the July 4th weekend and loved every minute of it! The owner was very helpful, kind and responsive. The home is very clean and has everything you could possibly need. The beds and the bedding were the absolute best - very comfortable (excellent rest!) and well decorated! We woke up the first morning and enjoyed sitting on the patio watching the hummingbirds and listening to the creek. Our three children (ages 11, 9 and 5) had a blast playing in the creek and exploring. The fishing right across the street was fun for all of us - such beautiful sounds, incredible waterfalls, and peaceful surroundings. I loved the flowers, butterflies, picking blueberries - everything about this home makes us want to come back - real soon! It was a great time to get away and unwind as a family. We did not want to leave and we can't wait to stay again!

Beautiful, peaceful, fully equipped home away from home

  • 5 of 5

To put it simple...this place is heavenly. My husband, myself and our 3 children have spent the last two spring breaks at the cottage. The home is fully equipped with everything we need. The property provides endless exploration for the kids. The back deck is so relaxing. The nearby hiking is perfect for kids. All in all, this place is a perfect getaway. Roger is so nice...he brought us homemade brownies and apple butter. We plan on coming back as much as possible.
