Casa Rayón Where you are at home!

Casa Rayon: an updated Spanish Colonial Home

Casa Rayón is a secure and updated Casa Antigua from the Spanish colonial period located in the desirable Colonia Americana neighborhood of Guadalajara Jalisco. The exact date of the construction is unknown but it is assumed to date back to the 1800s. Its thick adobe wall and 15 foot ceilings keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Thru out the house you will notice the artisan crafted mosaicos hidráulico or encaustic cement tiles that became popular in Europe and Latin America in the 1850s. They are still manufactured today in Guadalajara, by hand, using the same techniques.

You will appreciate the hand crafted talavera tiles line the walls of the kitchen as you enjoy modern conveniences like an induction burners, full size refrigerator, microwave oven, convection toaster oven coffee maker, and blender. You can still see where the openings in the ceiling were that allowed smoke to escape from the wood burning stove tops from yesteryear. For your convenience the kitchen is also equipped with cook ware and utensils, as well as plates dishes and flatware.

The bathrooms have talavera tiles as well as hand painted sinks. The Suite San Francisco bathroom has dual sinks and a bathtub to sit and soak.

Casa Rayón is conveniently located in the desirable Colonia Americana Neighborhood of Guadalajara, less than one block from Parque Revolución where the two subway lines meet, various bus lines connect, and you will always find a taxi.

The Templo Expiatorio, Gothic church is thee blocks from Casa Rayón. Easily WALK to historical downtown attractions, museums, banks, clubs, restaurants, shopping, language schools, and grocery stores.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Casa Rayon is an excellent choice for solo travellers or larger groups, especially if they rent both rooms. The kitchen is very well equipped and a supermarket is a short distance away, so you can easily prepare your meals here. The dining room and living room are also attractive and well appointed.

I liked the fact that the historic centre of Guadalajara was just a 15 minute walk down Calle Juarez.

Thomas and Antonio are very gracious and helpful hosts.

Highly recommended!

Excellent location and friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Casa Rayon for two weeks mid-July. Thomas and Antonio are excellent hosts, very helpful and knowledgeable about Guadalajara. They have assembled a very helpful guidebook which includes overviews, recommendations and directions for nearby restaurants, activities, historical monuments and the nearby colonial cities. They are very responsive and always willing to share their local knowledge.

Casa Rayon is in a central location with many restaurants and activities nearby. Almost everything is within walking distance and if not, taxis are easy to catch at the nearby park. The apartment is very clean and spacious with good amenities. The furniture is comfortable. There are many different areas to relax, read and determine your next outing. The skylight in the living area and the plants give a feeling of being outdoors without worrying about the rain or heat. High speed internet, free international phone calls and cable TV make it easy to keep in touch with friends and family at home.

We would definitely stay at Casa Rayon again.

Californians loving GDL

This home is simply amazing! It's location is perfect! We could easily walk to wonderful destinations, hop on the subway, a bus, or flag down a taxi. There is a full kitchen to make yourself a snack or a meal, but it's also very easy to walk only one block to get to the first of many restaurants in the area.
The home owners are right there if you should need anything, and if you don't are so very respectful of your privacy. They have done an amazing job of designing the interior of this home. The ammenities are endless: full kitchen, 2 full baths, a washer/dryer, internet, cable, bottled water, two phones - one for local calls, another for international calls, which are free!

As far as the surrounding area, the people are kind and helpful. There is a public square just down the street in front of the cathedral that is perfect for people watching, grabbing a snack or, on market days, great for seeing local arts and crafts.

Overall, you will be torn at times. Do you go out into the wonderful city for an adventure or do you stay at home, relaxing and enjoying your beautiful surroundings? Tough choice and one we loved making every day! We will return!

What an amazing house

  • 5 of 5
If you visit Guadalajara, I really, really encourage you to go to Casa Rayon. The house is so beautifully decorated and renovated and is impeccably clean and well-maintained. Antonio couldn't have been nicer, and he and Thomas added that extra touch with a robust and detailed city guide that they've put together. I really encourage you to take advantage of that - it helped us immensely.

Interestingly, Guadalajara is very unusual from other Mexican cities. Don't think you'll find any restaurants close to Centro - they simply aren't there. Instead, you'll want to head in the opposite direction to find good places to eat. Also, if you go on a tequila tour (which is really quite fun), be sure to head back into Guadalajara for lunch. The town of Tequila leaves a little to be desired.

One thing to take note of - if you have a smaller car, there is a garage at your disposal. If you have anything larger, I'd take advantage of the underground lot behind the church - it's pretty secure and locked at night.

5 amigos visit Guadalajara

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at Casa Rayon about 6pm Saturday evening. Thomas and Antonio were there to greet us and give us the lay of the land. Wonderful apartment, has everything needed for a very comfortable stay for 5 adults, 2 couples and a single. About a 10 block walk into central old town, Soriana (lg market) about 4 blocks away. Check out all of the little local markets, eateries, bakeries, etc. within 2 blocks of Casa Rayon. Antonio called and arranged an excursion for us and taxi back to the airport. He was very accessible for questions and suggestions. Great area, walked everywhere except for our out of town explorations. Good restaurants from 4-12 blocks in many directions. Great apartment for a week or a month. We highly recommend Casa Rayon.

In the Heart of Guadalajara

  • 4 of 5
Our hosts Thomas and Antonio were so friendly and very helpful (and the fact that they both speak English well is a plus). Thomas went out of his way to ensure that our stay was amazing as he helped us with organizing services for us throughout our stay. Their were 5 of us in their house and there was plenty of room. The only draw back is the lack of natural light and natural ventilation, as the place has only one window in the front bedroom. The backdoor does open for cross ventilation, but it's rather stuffy and dark without natural light. I think they have air conditioning, but it's only in the bedrooms, so the place gets rather stuffy. Other than that, the place is centrally located and walking distance to the sub way, grocery store, wonderful restaurants and even a yoga studio. I would recommend this place to travelers who want to be close to great amenities.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to comment on your stay. We really enjoyed having your party of 5 stay with us. We appreciate you noticing that we do make every effort and go the extra mile in helping our guests have the most enjoyable stay possible. Now if we could only control the weather.

My apologies for the rain during your stay. Due to the weather there probably was not a lot of sun pouring through the windows in the front and back of the house or the 9 foot by 9 foot skylight in the center of the home. The cathedral height ceilings throughout the house coupled with the large skylight in the center of the house usually offer a light and airy feel. The bedrooms do have air conditioners as you mentioned as well as windows and there are also fans in all the rooms. Thanks again for your recommendation we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

Great location and a Lovely Apartment

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in this two bedroom ground floor flat for one week. It was a nice alternative to a hotel room or a bed and breakfast and cost us about $80 a night - comparable or less to the B&B's and hotels I looked at. The owners used to rent the two bedrooms separately but now they rent only the whole flat so it is very private. It's an old building that has been remodeled so it has all the modern conveniences but old world charm (18 foot ceilings). 2 couples or a family could easily stay here very comfortably and save a ton of money. We only used the 1 bedroom which was huge and had a bathroom with 2 sinks, shower and tub. The whole flat was very quiet. There is another bedroom and bath also. The listing is very accurate as are the photos. The kitchen included a full size refrigerator and all the dishes, pots and pans, etc. that one would need to prepare full means although we didn't do that. Wi-Fi coverage was excellent. Everything was very clean. The location is about a 15 minute leisurely walk to the Cathedral and all the historical sites around it. One could take the subway which is only about 3 blocks away. We used the subway to go to the Mercado Libertad and it was very handy and easy. My favorite thing about staying here was Templo Expiatorio and the adjoining plaza. It is only 3 very short blocks away and was fun to go to every evening. Sunday especially it is filled with food stands, dancing lessons, stalls selling things and, of course, the 12 apostles coming out every hour from high up the facade of the church. We also loved the Oaxacan restaurant located on the corner of the plaza closest to our flat. Excellent food and you can sit on the 2nd or 3rd floor and watch all the activity in the plaza while eating. 65 pesos for the most expensive thing on the menu. Antonio was an excellent host (the owners live upstairs) and very helpful. All in all a very good place to stay.
