If you are looking for your typical beach house with yellow and pink walls, this isn't the house for you... I designed this house for sheer comfort with nice home furnishings, granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and a killer kitchen with glass across the entire front of the house facing the gulf! It has a cathedral wooden ceiling and beautiful wood floors. The covered front deck is 45 X 12 feet and it shows and feels new. This is one NICE house! It's perfect for two couples with kids, a family or just the two of you! The house is positioned directly in the middle of the state beach with no houses to the left or right to block your view of the gorgeous white sand and blue water.

My husband and I made our 3rd annual trip to Gumbo One this year. We have always enjoyed our time at Gumbo One, but there were several improvements made this year that made our stay even better than previous years. This house shows the pride of it's owners, and they have every right to be proud!

Disappointed...

Rented this house for a week for family vacation. Upon arrival, we could immediately "smell the use of cleaning supplies" but what we saw as far as the cleanliness of the house was far below standards and didn't reflect the pristine photos on the website. Just a quick list of problems we encountered: roaches, food splatters on the kitchen cabinets/walls/fridge/stove from previous occupants, dust bunnies all over the floor, dust was at least an inch thick on most surfaces (including ceiling fans, baseboards, pictures, walls, all return A/C vents, decorative fake plants), hair on toilet, bar stools were broken (couldn't use them unless you didn't mind falling), outdoor chairs at table need to be condemned, the laundry room was just scary and smelled stagnant, downstairs lights didn't work, master bath shower had a lot of mold/mildew in it that wouldn't come off (we didn't even use this bathroom because it was gross), master bedroom mattress needs to be replaced, kitchen carpet runner was absolutely disgusting (dirty and stained), the microwave was so busted up inside we were scared to use it...essentially the housekeeping/house was so TERRIBLE that we spent the first 2-3 hours of our vacation cleaning!!!!!! We wouldn't even allow our 2 kids to walk around the house without flip flops because the floors were so dirty!! We did call Reed Reality and complain so they sent the same housekeepers over again. When the housekeepers got there all they kept saying was how the house needed a "good deep cleaning". In my opinion, a good deep cleaning should occur after EVERY stay!!
Also be forewarned, no where in the description of the house does it state that the house is across the street from a public beach access and dune restoration project. The dunes couldn't be walked on so we had to walk around them to gain access to the beach (really wasn't a big deal) but all the cars parked along our street for public access was a distraction.
Besides the house issues, we really had a great vacation but I will say sitting on the front deck of the house in rocking chairs every morning/evening while enjoying a beverage was nice! The beach was fantastic and we will return next year...just to a different house! I can see the house use to be awesome and really cute but it's been neglected for a while! :(
TIP: bring a fan for the deck if you choose to stay because sometimes the breeze just doesn't happen AND bring bug spray!! Those Alabama mosquitos are vicious at night! ;)

Owner's Response: Of all the years having our house I haven't responded to a review because of the five stars we have from our guest and the many return guest we encounter. It would be easy to say something like you can't please everyone, etc. but that is not the point. Our house is where people come to have a vacation and relax, and if we missed the ball on the cleanliness to there standards, then we have failed at our intentions to be the best. Was it the way it was described? I was not there, but I do know the cleaning company we use works very hard to exceed everyone expectations. And if they don't, then they will come out and do what ever it takes to make it right. I only wish they had call me directly or called Reed Realty and gave us the opportunity to make them happy. As far as walking around the dunes. Everyone has to do that where needed. That is part of the beauty of the area.

Wonderful house!

We love this house, and this was our second visit to "Gumbo One." Among the things we appreciated were the unobstructed beach views, the vaulted ceilings and open floor plan, and the pet-friendliness of this home. As far as pet-friendly vacation rentals go, this is among the better quality ones. We met the owner once, and found him to be a very pleasant gentleman who was anxious to be helpful. However, there wasn't much to help us with. Almost everything was perfect here, and our aggravations were minor: the dishwasher was useless to us, because it would not complete a cycle, the satellite remotes in the bedrooms were without batteries and, after we purchased new batteries for the remotes, we couldn't get them to function, anyway! Only one of the lights in the master bedroom had working bulbs, the ceiling fans throughout the house were filthy and the furniture was quite dusty. These issues, obviously, were the fault of the real estate company that manages the property, and shame on them for not having done their jobs properly! Yes, we could have called and complained about these items, and I'm certain that they would have been addressed promptly...but having our vacation interrupted by strangers coming in and out of the house and upsetting our dogs would not have been pleasant for any of us, and, as I indicated, the inconveniences were minor enough that we just decided to live with them. We did, however, list them on the comments sheet provided by the rental agency, so hopefully, these issues will be resolved before the next visitor arrives. We're leaving for home tomorrow, and our vacation was wonderful! "Gumbo One" is a great house! We're looking forward to visiting again next year.

Just what the doctor ordered

My family desperately needed family time. The beach called! Gumbo One delivered. In reading prior reviews, the owner's response is correct. Towels and linens were all good. The view was great. Access to the beach was unimpeded. Weather cooperated. The house was clean and set up perfectly for my family of 5, and dog, to spend time together as a family. 2 full bathrooms was great. Kitchen was great and was stocked with great dishes and pans. Only thing it probably could have used was a disposal. Bring garbage bags with you. Definitely recommend contracting with company to deliver beach umbrella/tent and groceries - we wanted to be in quiet area and we drove the 20-30 minutes when we wanted action. Small grocery close by though. I like that there were no window coverings in front - not needed. Only two "complaints" and they turned out to be good or no issue. Picture show ceiling fans on deck. Obviously have been replaced by just lights. BUT - not needed, The breeze is great and the deck is great! Also, we did not have Internet access all week. A little frustrating BUT in retrospect, a blessing. We did not lose our kids to their video toys all week. All in all, a GREAT week. Reed Rental was great in helping with the details and planning and the house was everything and more we could have wanted at a reasonable price.

Nice house!

Sorry that I'm so late submitting this review, but better late than never, I guess! My husband and I stayed at "Gumbo One" last October with our dog, Lucy, and had an absolutely lovely time. The house was almost exactly as I expected to find it -- the listing description and photographs were definitely accurate. This is one NICE house! The property was clean and well-maintained, and the free movie rentals provided to us by the realty company managing the property were a nice touch. The view of the Gulf is incredible -- or would have been, if there hadn't been so many oil rigs visible from the shore. The beach itself was lovely, though. I especially enjoyed myself in the kitchen...this is one VERY nice (if small and narrow) kitchen! It's easy to tell that the owner of this house is a chef, and I really appreciated the fact that the kitchen is so well-equipped.

The only issues I had with the house were as follows: there are absolutely no curtains or blinds in the windows in the front of the house. While on one hand, it can be nice when the lovely Gulf view is the first thing you see when you come out of the bedroom, keep in mind that not everybody is fully clothed when emerging from the bedroom for the first time in the a.m. The lack of curtains or blinds (and the resulting lack of privacy) can be an inconvenience, especially if a person forgets to bring his or her robe on vacation. The bed linens are so-so, and in poor repair, and the bath linens are awful! The few (and I DO mean, FEW) towels and washcloths provided to us by the realty company are the cheap, low-quality kind of linens one would expect to find in a one-star hotel. Should we return to this property, we will definitely be bringing our own linens with us next time! The only other inconvenience I found was that it's a good 17-mile drive to the nearest decent grocery store, but except for these few minor inconveniences listed, this was a great place to stay, and it was an excellent value for the money. It's been my experience that most "pet-friendly" homes are neither are clean or as nice as "Gumbo One," and I very much appreciated being able to bring our furry family member with us on our vacation.

GREAT VIEW

THIS IS A GREAT LOCATION AND VIEW WITH LOTS OF BIRDS, DOLPHIN AND BOAT ACTION. THE INSIDES ARE STARTING TO SHOW WEAR AND IT NEEDS SOME REPAIRS TO KITCHEN ITEMS AND THROW RUG REPLACEMENT AND LINENS AND TOWELS WERE MORE LIKE A MOTEL 6 SO YOU MAY WANT TO BRING YOUR OWN. THE BEACH IS GREAT TO WALK AND CLOSE TO FT. MORGAN STATE PARK, MARINA/RESTURANT AND FERRY. FISHING IS GOOD AT THE BEACH AND ON THE BAY SIDE. THIS IS STILL A GOOD VALUE WITH A GREAT UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW OF THE GULF WITH FRIENDLY NEIGHBORS.

Owner's Response: Just to let everyone know Gumbo One has had a complete face lift as of May of this year (2012). A new linen and towel company is now supplying our linens, all rugs have been replaced and the wood floors were refinished also.

This is a beautiful house with a great view of the water with nothing between you and the gulf.
