“Madeline’s Cottage” is our guest house located on Opal Cliff Drive in the best beach-side micro-climate in Santa Cruz County. We have the best beach weather and the quietest beach location in town!

The cottage is set well off the street just a few doors from gated “Privates” beach (you’ll have use of a gate key during your stay). From here you can hear the waves crash and the seagulls call, and walk or bike to many local attractions: A five minute walk one direction will take you to the dining and night life of charming Capitola Village, five minutes the other direction leads you to the world-famous surfing area of Pleasure Point. Madeline’s Cottage neighborhood offers access to entertainment for every interest.

Maybe you don’t feel like venturing out- or you have little ones and need to stay a bit closer to home? The cottage enjoys use and views of our award-winning garden and yard.

More About the Property: Opal Cliffs is the best neighborhood in town, but maybe you'd like to get out of the immediate neighborhood? The more urban cultural attractions of downtown Santa Cruz are 15 minutes away.

Say you don’t like that 'Downtown' kind of culture? The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and its Giant Dipper roller coaster are also 15 minutes away. The Boardwalk is a quintessential seaside amusement park in a style circa about 1965.

Due to the floor plan of the cottage it is best suited to couples and small families. The kitchen/dining area is light, bright, and roomy, and separate from the family room where the TV is located. The Garden Bedroom has a queen bed and large closet, and looks through a big sliding door onto the garden, while the “Kids” bedroom is smaller and has a (two twins) trundle bed. The bathroom is located off the “Kids” room, so everyone had better be very close friends or family. Overall floor space of the cottage is ample for 4

Madeline’s Cottage is located behind our own personal home on our 1/3 acre lot, so you will not feel wedged in amongst a lot of other vacation rentals, and we take pride in making your stay as pleasant as possible. Our location, while across the street from the beach, does not have an ocean view; you must walk a few doors down for that.

The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with all utensils, but if you have special needs or interests please let us know. Also, if you have dust allergies and let us know that a bit in advance we can remove all soft-surface flooring from the cottage.

The attractions of downtown Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk are about 15 minutes away by car (or 20 minutes by bicycle), and UC Santa Cruz is about 20 minutes in the car.

For guests with allergies all soft floor coverings can be easily removed- just let us know in advance. Please be aware that the floor plan- with the bath located off the smaller bedroom- might be awkward for unrelated couples. The smaller bedroom is equipped with a twin trundle bed (ie two twins).

Location is great with a lovely walk to captiola along the ocean. It is close enough to Santa Cruz and great hikes (big basin state park!!) - but removed enough for some peace and quiet. We discovered Gayle's bakery which is a very close drive and a wonderful spot for breakfast or lunch. The cottage was perfect - with comfortable beds and an equipped kitchen with everything we needed to make our meals. We would come again!

My husband, our 3 year old daughter and my best friend had a great stay here. The garden was wonderful for our daughter to play in as we made meals or drank coffee on the patio. We loved walking into Capitola village, visiting the beach and going for runs long the cliffs. Easy access from here to Monterray Bay Aquarium, the old growth redwoods in Felton, the boardwalk in Santa Cruz by car, plus San Francisco as well. If you want to stay put and out of your car, you could spend days just enjoying life in walking distance of the cottage. The owners were helpful but unobtrusive and we would certainly try to return in the future!

Great place to stay....

We loved the cottage with almost private enclosed garden. It was as described, clean and neat. Everything we needed was there..... It was quiet, sunny and had a lovely garden. The kitchen was well appointed although the gas kettle was odd for me. Lots of hot water, good shower, comfy bed albeit a small double. The owner was very helpful with info and printing whale watching tickets. There are a lot of interesting places near the house, plus having a private beach key was excellent. We would definitely stay again another year. Many thanks!!

We loved staying at Madeline's cottage. Hugh was very responsive throughout the reservation process. The cottage was exactly as portrayed in the description and photos. The neighborhood is a nice one and very quiet. There's a Whole Foods right nearby plus all kinds of stores and coffee shops.

We especially enjoyed the enclosed outdoor space where our 4-year-old could play outside safely, and the tricycle the owners left out was an unexpected plus! Note that the bathroom is en suite with the second bedroom so this would not be a great choice for 2 couples. This is a great retreat for a small family or good friends!
