16 days of vacation heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We've just come home from 16 days of vacation heaven at this lovely condo. We based our choice largely on the other reviews listed, and all were spot on. (note - we did not once experience the distasteful smell from the landfill noted in one review). Jean was the perfect long distance hostess, promptly answering all questions and providing a very detailed guide to the condo and the island. Jose Luis was a great on-site manager, friendly & always available. We spent every evening on the balcony enjoying the views and the cool ocean breeze. We did rent a golf cart for the duration of our visit. This allowed us lots of choices for our activities, although it certainly wouldn't be absolutely necessary. The taxis run by the condo regularly - every few minutes, actually, and you can just flag one down as needed - and the cost is minimal. We ran out of gas once in our cart (the gas gauge said 3/4 full - beware!) and we just waved down a taxi. The taxi driver was very helpful in taking us to the Chedraui (grocery store) for a gas can, then to the Pemex for the gas, then back to the cart, where he refilled the tank for us..and he spoke no English! Just an example of how friendly and wonderful the Mexican people are on this lovely island.

We enjoyed many different experiences. We snorkled at Playa Norte near the rocks where the Caribbean comes into the inlet, and we enjoyed live music and great food at Fenix right there at the beach. We also snorkled at Garrifon de Castillo, recommended by Jean or we would never have noticed this little spot near the condo. Also relaxed by the beach there for hours, with great service and the best shrimp cocktail! Captain Dulche was a restaurant just across the street, also with great food and a beautiful beach. The Joint, just up the street, had amazing frozen mojitoes, and we went there several times until the bar dog, Marley, bit me when I pushed him away from my table...so beware! According to the staff, I wasn't the first customer to be bitten, either! Too bad, we really like the place. We also ate several times at Lola Valentino's on Hidalgo downtown; the breakfast crepes and the breakfast cocktails were delicious. Beach Zama was another favorite beach club, with beautiful pools in case you tire of the beach. The fried shrimp tacos there were scrumptious, but the service was really slow, unlike most places.

We did not have one disappointing experience with Jean or the condo - we will return to this spot!

Loved it AGAIN!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this condo for the second time and were not disappointed! This condo has that “Welcome Home” kind of feeling. It is the perfect location for people who like the business of North Beach during the day but then want to retreat to a more quiet location in the evening – and maybe have a cocktail or two while watching the sun set.

There are many regulars at the complex, as you will see if you sit poolside for an afternoon. Seems that once people find this gem, they don’t want to stay anywhere else!

We again rented a golf cart and I would say that this enhances your Isla experience greatly as it allows you to explore the Island on your schedule (or lack of schedule). As usual, Jean was exceptionally helpful, both before and after our trip and Jose was always available to answer any questions we might have. We will definitely be returning!

Affordable South End Condo

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Jean's condo. Prior to arrival, she was very prompt in answering all our questions and providing additional information about the area. The condo complex consists of three buildings housing 20 condo units. This condo is on the third floor (no elevator). It has a beautiful view across the water looking towards Cancun. We cooked a few meals and found the kitchen to be well stocked. The breezes are great - no need for A/C. The pool was clean and cold - very refreshing! Jose Luis (the onsite manager) was very friendly and helpful. He carried our (heavy) luggage up to the unit for us and brought us a new water bottle mid-week.

I feel I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the condo complex's proximity to the dump/water treatment facility. The day we arrived, we smelled it immediately and wondered if we would have to deal with it all week, Thankfully, it wasn't bad 24/7 - it depended on which way the wind was blowing and I'm guessing it didn't bother us more than 20% of the time. Also, the condo owners association needs to replace/add to it's supply of lounge chairs down at the pool. I think there were only 6 resin loungers and half of them were cracked or broken.

All in all, it was an enjoyable stay.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry that this guest experienced the unusual weather pattern that blew the unpleasant odors towards Loma Bonita. The transfer station is on the other side of the island where the prevailing trade winds usually take care of any smelly issues. New pool loungers have been requested and hopefully will in place very soon.

Affordable South End Condo

I am going to leave a review on Homeaway, but wanted to let you know about a couple of things that I am going to bring up. I have many positive things to say about the condo itself - beautiful view, well-stocked kitchen, great breezes, etc. But I feel I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the condo complex's proximity to the dump/water treatment facility. The first time we pulled up to the condo, we smelled it immediately and wondered if we would have to deal with it all week, Thankfully, it wasn't bad 24/7; it depended on which way the wind was blowing (and my husband and I had the front bedroom facing the pool). Also, the condo complex needs to replace/add to it's supply of lounge chairs down at the pool. I think there were only 6 chairs and half of them were cracked or broken.

Isla Gem

  • 4 of 5

After over ten years of staying on Playa Norte, we felt that Isla was becoming too "Cancunized" and considered finding another winter vacation spot. Instead we decided to give the other end of Isla a try. We're glad we did. Loma Bonita is a beautiful property located about 1/2 mile south of La Gloria. It's an easy walk to that neighborhood and also convenient to Captain Dulches, Marias Kan Kin, Casa de los Suenos and The Joint. A little farther but certainly walkable is Punta Sur.

This 2 bedroom unit is comfortably furnished and the view is spectacular---the picture on the website doesn't do it justice. The master bedroom shares this view, but we opted to stay in the east facing 2nd bedroom in order to watch the sunrise over the Caribbean and because the en suite bathroom door doesn't offer much privacy from the master (you'll see what we mean). The kitchen could use some updating, but was more than adequate for our needs.

A real bonus is the on site manager, Jose Luis. He's the perfect host.

AWESOME!!!

  • 5 of 5

The reviews for Isla Cumbre don't lie. My husband and two kids (18 and 24) spent a week in this condo over New Years. The condo itself is as all described in all the other reviews - a very comfortable and tastfully decorated condo, amazing sunsets, nice pool. What we enjoyed most however is the location! We liked NOT being in the center of town - way too busy - but it was close enough to go there when we wanted to. We were able to run every day on the sidewalks with breathtaking views - we REALLY enjoyed Captain Dulche right across the street. We actually spent some part of each day there - the food there was probably the best we had on the island - very fresh, tastefully presented, and reasonally priced. The attention at their restaurant was also amazing. The grounds spectacular - never too crowded. VERY interesting museum on the grounds. We scuba dived with the operator that leaves from their pier - so it was no hassle - we just signed up right there. The owner of Captain Dulche who happened to be there and recommended the Sardinia restaurant - in the center of town. It was VERY good -authentic italian food. Service also great - and the price - for us coming from DC - was a real bargain. I highly recommend going to Caribbean Village for a drink at sunset - that was spectacular - between the dramatic cliffs and the sculpture garden you can sit there for a long time taking it all in.

Jose Luis, the condo manager - was always very helpul - available at anytime. Replenshed our water whenever needed - never having to wait. Called taxis if we needed it. Fixed the A/C in the master bedroom.

We speak spanish so it was easy to get around and to find out where to get the fresh tortillas (in an alley way right off the restauant strip -between all the souvie shops) There's a sign, but you have to look closely. We also bought fresh fish off the boat - right near the ferry terminal.

While the formerly sleepy island is now touristy - there is still a good feel for local culture and it is worlds apart from Cancun (in a GOOD way). The island is VERY safe - something you cannot say about many parts of mexico. The tourism is also very international - which we liked - folks from all over the world.

We had a great time!!! Thank you Jean for sharing your lovely home with us!!
