OCEANFRONT SECLUDED CHALET IN BAR HARBOR - LOCALLY OWNED!

Bar Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The Maine Chalet is a family-owned and operated oceanfront vacation rental 8 miles NW of downtown Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island in the great state of Maine. It is a quiet and secluded house right on the water perfect for couples or small families who want to vacation in Bar Harbor, but stay just far enough away from the craziness of town. Acadia National Park is spread all over the island -- the nearest entrance to our home is about 4 miles away. The far side of the island is about 15 miles away (Southwest Harbor).

We've been innkeepers for most of our lives, though we've recently sold our inn -- hospitality is in our blood! If you're looking for a getaway -- this is a great choice! The house has 1 bedroom with a Queen bed and 1 loft bedroom with two double beds in it. The house has a fully-equipped kitchen, a gas grill and comes with a full set of linens. We're dog friendly, too (although you should check with us if you have more than one dog). Come and enjoy Bar Harbor!

About The Owner

I've lived in Bar Harbor since 1971 and until 2008 I owned an inn (my daughter and her partner ran it for a number of years) as well as this vacation rental. I also own and run Bar Harbor Auto Repair in town so if you have car troubles while you're on vacation, you can come see me. In the picture is my current wife, Gail. You might talk to either of us when you make a reservation. Please let us know how we can make your stay in Bar Harbor (and hopefully in our house) the best vacation you've ever had.

The Owner purchased this house in 1980

Why The Owner chose Bar Harbor

First, I built the house myself. I chose this property because it was a prime piece of oceanfront land just far enough outside of Bar Harbor to be secluded and tranquil when town is a madhouse, but still close enough to everything we want to do. For years we used it as a personal getaway or hosted friends and family when they visited. We've rented it weekly for over ten years now. We still think of it as our home and not as a vacation rental -- we love it and take good care of it!

What makes this house unique

First, we've been in the Bar Harbor hospitality business since 1971 -- we know the town and can help make your vacation awesome! Second, you're in a quiet location 100 ft. from the water (if you're looking at a map, find Hadley point just north of Route 3 as you drive from the head of the island to Bar Harbor -- that' where we are!). Third, this area of the island is a great launching point for getting into Acadia National Park. Fourth, the home is simple and affordable -- great for couples or small families.

A wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent a lovely week in the Chalet and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners provided everything we needed, including lobster pots and lots of dishes, cups and serving ware. Towels and blankets were plentiful. We especially enjoyed our early morning coffee on the deck watching the tide come in and the neighborhood clam diggers.
The house was spacious, clean and well organized.

I highly recommend this if you want a quiet, somewhat secluded place where relaxing is your top priority.

A perfect vacation rental in Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5
Tonight is the last night of our one-week stay in this Bar Harbor chalet and is the end of a perfect vacation week. We are so thankful to have found this pet-friendly, ocean-front, private rental for us and our chocolate lab.

The chalet is in a private, quiet location and is just as it is described, but with more attention to detail than I expected. There are lots of towels with a stack of them specifically for dogs. The kitchen has a 4-slice toaster that my husband enjoyed and also a coffee pot. Other than breakfast I have to admit that I didn't cook at all, but the cupboards are stocked with wine glasses, dishes, and all of the cookware you could want or need. There is a large bedroom on the main floor with a bed that is extremely comfortable, a desk, nightstand, bureau and two closets. We didn't need to use the upstairs bedroom/loft, but there are two double beds up there.

Gail was responsive and helpful from my very first e-mail contact with her after finding the chalet rental online. And I called Joe shortly after arriving at the chalet last Saturday because the wireless wasn't working. He told me what the easy fix was and it was working again without any issue. And then I reluctantly had to call him a couple days later when I locked myself out of the chalet. He answered my call immediately, told me where he was located and in a short 10-minute drive, we had another key.

I would highly recommend this rental owned and managed by responsive owners to anyone looking for an ideal Bar Harbor vacation spot.

Great Chalet

  • 5 of 5
Husband, 9 year old son, and I visited Bar Harbor and stayed in this chalet. The chalet was great and exactly as described. It was perfect for the three of us; sometimes we had a hard time leaving to explore Acadia and the city. It was super quiet and awesome to have a coastal area to explore that was empty of people. My son ran down there everytime we got back to see where the tide was and what sea life he could find. The view was great; in my mind, the trees added to the ambiance.

Chalet was 10 minutues or so from town, and less than that to Acadia. It was near other restaurants and activities including the Oceanarium, Pirates Cove, and an ice cream shop. We enjoyed leaving the hustle and bustle of downtown and eating at some of the eateries along Route 3.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed (and more). My husband used the grill to cook out twice and it was great.

Very happy we rented the chalet. Gail was great to work with and provided us with a wonderful place to relax on our vacation.

Great location, quiet, nice view

  • 5 of 5
We (myself, wife, adult daughter, and yellow lab) stayed at the Chalet the week of 08/10/13. The Chalet is within minutes of the Trenton bridge, and a 10 minute drive from Bar Harbor. It is on the water, with a short walk down the path through the woods down to the water. The water is up to the woods at high tide, and around 100 feet out at low tide. High tide is a much better time to swim. This is a great place to clam!!!! You must have a town of Bar Harbor clamming license, which you can pick up at the town hall. We caught 6 dozen clams in an hour (bring a pitchfork and gloves. I sliced up my fingertips). The chalet is the right size for our family, and the ability to bring the dog is key. This is not a large house. It is cozy. But, we were very content, and hated leaving. The gas tank was full, and we cooked lobsters on the grill ($3.99/lb!!!!) The trees have somewhat obscured the views as pictured above, and I spent some time on the deck trying to figure out what trees I'd cut down if I owned the house, but it is still a beautiful view. There is wireless, that worked well. There is no dishwasher or washer/dryer, but this was not a big deal. The house was clean, in good condition, and very quiet. We would certainly come back.

Quiet, romantic getaway!

  • 5 of 5
This was our sixth trip to Acadia, staying in various cottages, but we have found the perfect one for us and will never stay anywhere else. We found this cozy, wonderful cottage online and it was everything we expected it to be. The owners are wonderful and Gail is very personable and responsive to any questions we had. The cottage is perfect for two or a small family. We truly enjoyed just being there. Walks down to shore and just sitting and listening to the peace and enjoying the serenity were a highlight of our vacation. It was great to take a drive and enjoy Bar Harbor and the sights of Acadia, knowing, we had this home away from home to come back to. Every evening we would pick up our lobster from the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, highly recommended, and come back to cook them in the pot provided and enjoy. The kitchen is well appointed as is the entire cottage. We definitely plan to come back, soon!
