Further details for this vacation cottage rental in Edwards, New York

Comfortable Living: A large deck overlooking the water is right off the kitchen, making it the perfect spot for sipping coffee to the chorus of songbirds, having snacks or meals. The grill meisters will love cooking on the deck, just a few steps away from more slathering sauce or a favorite beverage. The large back yard has a swing set, horseshoe pit, and plenty of room for kickball or whiffleball. Ring the bell and they’ll all come running. First floor sleeping features 2 Kings, 1 Queen in 3 bedrooms and 2 twins in a high-rise on the porch, plus a pull-out queen, if needed. The second floor has the most sought-after loft bedroom with a King bed and the kids’ attic with 4 singles.

Fun Inside: When you’re not outside, there is a TV with Direct TV®, DVD player, radio, lots of games, books, and puzzles to keep everyone amused. The gas heater keeps it warm and toasty on those sometimes chilly nights and is a great place to catch up on your reading, share a conversation, or have those belly-laughing good times when you’re gathered together.

You'll Love the Lake and the Region: Trout Lake is absolutely beautiful and is one of the cleanest lakes in the Adirondacks. The water is crystal clear, weed-free, and stocked annually with game fish. We have a map in the cottage of the best fishing spots on the lake, but you'll catch plenty right off the dock. One-third of the lake is owned by the State and is forever wild. You can paddle, row, or even swim to the Trout Lake State Park which has 1,700 acres, a sandy beach, and great hiking trails. Numerous other State Parks are within a 10 minute ride from the cottage. The Adirondack region abounds with places to visit, mountains to climb, hiking and biking trails, State Parks, and for those who love adventure, some of the best white-water rafting anywhere in the country. There's even a casino only 20 minutes away. You just can't help but have fun at Glen-Mar Pines!

Awesome Cottage Great For Large Family!!

Gary Davis Darien Center, New York
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had a great time at Glen Mar Pines. There were six adults and three grandchildren and the whole experience was special. Everything was exactly as described the cottage was clean and there was plenty of space to accomodate everyone. The kitchen as described as was perfect for a large family. The owner provided excellent customer service the toaster malfunctioned and the next day there was a brand new toaster on our door step. Trout lake was beautiful and was as nice as described. I would recommend this property to a friend or relative without hesitation and we hope to return next year.

Absolutely relaxing

This house is great for a big family (8 people). There was plenty of common space to hang around in. The lake was beautiful and warm, we went swimming almost everyday (We took the boats out to Turtle Island). The lake is not too big, but big enough to explore a little. There is a great screened in porch with a fought over bed and enough chairs for all of us to hang around when it was buggy. The fire pit was fun (there was plenty of wood). The house had everything we needed. It was the most relaxing vacation we have had in years. The tap water smells a little of sulfur, but we brought a brita filter so it was fine (unless you are picky about that stuff). Groceries are about 25 min away, so we stocked up. It's not really in the Adirondack park, so there aren't really mountains right there, so not too much in the way of hiking. There isn't really much to do except enjoy nature and hang around, so if you are looking to just relax and wind down this is the place for you. The house was clean and nice. We would definitely rent this house again.

Not As Advertised

Review Submitted: August 8, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We've rented lake houses for years. This was our most disappointing experience. It's a property any family would be happy to own. However, it is a good rental value at half this price.

The owner called two weeks after our rental ended to inquire about our stay and solicit feedback. He is a very nice gentleman who uses a local agent to handle rentals. We presumed the owner hadn't visited in years, and perhaps was unaware that the description offered on the Web site did not match what we found, sometimes in significant ways.

For example, the Web site describes the lake as "weed-free" and says that the property has a "sandy beach." I spoke by phone with the rental agent, who assured me we could swim on-site, but we were chagrined to find that swimming wasn't possible. The area is filled with lily pads, there is no sand, and, for as far as one can trudge from shore, the lake bottom is absolute muck. At the end of the dock, I sank in muck to my knees. It was disheartening to our children (and the adults), who were looking forward to swimming at will. Instead, we had to plan trips to other swimming areas, including Higley Flow State Park, which was nice, but required a 1.5-hour round trip.

Other important observations for people considering renting this house and property:

1. The house was not well cleaned. Upon our arrival, we noticed large amounts of dust in the bedrooms, underneath kitchen rugs, etc.

2. The refrigerator wasn't working well when we arrived, keeping food at about 55 degrees. We got the vacuum and cleaned out underneath the refrigerator, which was filled with dust, getting the temp into the low 40s.

3. We weren't made aware until after our rental agreement was signed that the water in this house has a "slight sulphur odor." This means that the water smells like rotten eggs. We were told the smell would go away with use, but it never did. It was constant, and sometimes obtrusive.

4. Families, especially those with children, should be aware that only one of the bedrooms has a door. The others are closed off by curtains. This may work well for some families, but it did not for ours. In addition, noise from the living room is clearly transmitted to the loft.

5. The Web site says the loft has a terrific view of the lake, but the lake is barely visible through the trees.

On the bright side, the beds were of decent quality, the kitchen has a large table suitable for family get-togethers, and the townsfolk are friendly.

Nice and Peaceful but not good for swimming

Water lover2 Colorado
Review Submitted: August 1, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Would be great if you have a motor boat to get away from the shore and all the water lilies and muck so you can swim. There is no beach for swimming as mentioned in the ad. The house is nice however full of spiders and house keeping obviously isn't very detailed or all the spider webs in the middle bedroom on the main floor would have been cleared out and the carpet would have been cleaned-that room needs a lot of work. The rest of the rooms are pretty comfortable. It does offer a lot of room for a big group of people. The kitchen is the best for large groups. The fire pit and view are very relaxing and enjoyable. One other thing that is a little hard to take is the smell of the water (like rotten eggs) but I guess that goes with the environment. Great fireplace in living room and was needed for the cool nights. The lake is a very clean and beautiful one. For us the biggest drawback was the fact that you could not swim from shore and if we would have known that we would have rented a motor boat to bring along. We did enjoy the kayaks and the canoe.
Ken was nice to deal with. In our opinion it was too pricey for the limitations of not having a motor boat and ability to swim from the shore and the need to be cleaner and spider free.
The town has anything you need in the two small stores which was a plus and the people that work there are very friendly. Lots to see within an hour or so drive if you want to get away from the lake for a while.
Owner's Response: It is difficult to get a rating of “100%” in total satisfaction, but the owners are disappointed that the tenant did not make any “housekeeping” concerns known to them or the agent; such concerns would have been addressed immediately. If a situation existed which was not to the satisfaction of the tenants, telephone numbers were available. In fact, the only complaints that we heard during the two-week stay was the existence of water lilies at the beach front and that there was not a motor on the boat. The description clearly states that there is not a motor boat; however, all prospective tenants are told they may bring their own boat and use the dock.
The waterfront issue is being addressed and a solution will be found.

Getting feedback in our maiden year is helpful and some changes will be made.
