Portugal is a great holiday deal when you live like the residents. In this apartment, ideally located along the coast between Lisbon and Cascais, in the charming village of Carcavelos, you will do just that.
This recently refurbished apartment near the best beach on the Lisbon coastline is modest but has charm and all the amenities. An open floor plan and a wrap-around balcony with French doors offers a light-filled living and dining area with ocean breezes year round.
The longest beach along the Lisbon/Cascais coast is minutes away with a long boardwalk, more restaurants and bars from which to watch magnificent sunsets, all manner of water sports. Carcavelos is host to international surfing, kite surfing and wind surfing contests. The imposing 16C fort of Sao Juliao de Barra, once a political prison sits sentry at one end of the beach and at the other is an outcropping of ocean rock locally renowned for it's curative iodine.
Nearby, two popular hotels have pool, gym and conference facilities available at a per diem rate. There is a taxi stand and a tennis club and a small shopping center that offers every service needed.
With shopping, dining and excellent public transportation close by there is no need for a car but rental agencies are just a few minutes up the train line. Carcavelos is equally accessible to Lisbon with it's rich history and culture, Estoril with it's famous Casino and Cascais, a picturesque fishing village. Nearby is the beautiful mountain retreat of Sintra, the seat of the Portuguese royals and aristocracy with a palace, a castle and Moorish ramparts.
Tourism guidebooks in the apartment and a local contact will help you plan your vacation. Guided car tours are available and we will do our best to accommodate any special needs.
My brother and I inherited this apartment from my mother. We spent our teenage years as American ex-pats in this apartment before we both moved back to the USA for school, work, then marriage and family. We commuted daily by train to school in Lisbon. We made lasting friendships and feel very connected to Portugal. We wish we could be there more often. Recently we renovated the apartment in the hope that more people will enjoy what we enjoy and that it will be used more frequently. The neighbors are very pleasant as is the location. We have friends and connections that can help us personalize a visit for you with insider information and recommendations.

Our mother chose this apartment (which we have since inherited) because of it's location. She never drove and it is ideally located to public transportation. It is in a residential neighborhood with every amenity and is close to one of the more popular and best beaches along this remarkable coast line. Our mother chose Portugal because of it's beauty, unique character (very different from Spain) and because it was less expensive than the rest of Europe. It still is. We refurbished and furnished the apartment to accommodate today's needs and it is a modest but sunny, happy and comfortable home with modern conveniences.
I return to Portugal at least once a year to visit friends and revisit fond memories. Growing up in Portugal was a great experience and it spoiled me for food and wine. You really have to work hard to get a bad meal anywhere in Portugal. Eating out and outdoor cafe life is very much a part of the experience. After 35 years, the country still surprises me with it's easy hospitality and charm, diverse influences, incredible history, artisans, culture and earthiness .
The apartment is in a residential and recreational area with an active square where all the amenities are found. There are colorful open markets in the center of the village within walking distance and a large flea market once a week with everything on offer (including the kitchen sink). On the expansive boardwalk along the beach there are water sport schools and water sports and twice a year there are international surfing events. Many day trips are easily taken from Carcavelos to Estoril and Cascais, to the beach at Guincho, to the Boca do Inferno (Mouth of Hell), to Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) the westernmost point of continental Europe, to Lisbon with too many attractions to take in in a day and to Sintra, the mountain Summer retreats for the royals and aristocracy in the day. Overnight visits to the South and North, along the coast and in the interior offer incredibly well preserved history from the Moors and the Knights Templar, Vasco da Gama and the Age of Circumnavigation & Discovery. Portugal has a a very rich diversity of customs, crafts and cuisines that is unmatched for a country of it's comfortable size. We are happy to help you plan a memorable holiday.
