Our condo is located in a gated complex of about 64 units in the Lake Chapala area of Mexico. National Geographic rated this area the second best climate in the world, mainly because of its elevation( 5000 feet). It has 24 hour manned security and a full time staff of 8. There is a heated pool, hot tub and laundry facility on site. In the winter months it is a very social complex when all units are occupied. In the off season (May-October) it is very quiet and is very much like having the whole complex to yourself, and the monthly rates are substantially cheaper. RENT WITH AN OPTION TO BUY!

WE HAVE A GOOD CAR AVAILABLE FOR A MUCH BETTER RATE THAN THE TWO CAR RENTAL COMPANIES IN TOWN, SEE PHOTO OF DARK CHRYSLER 300.

Lifestyle: We feel the Lake Chapala experience adds years to our lives and we certainly feel a lot healthier after returning. There is no shortage of activities to get involved in: walking, mountain hikes, golf, tennis, slow pitch, beach volleyball, theatre and performances, language and art classes, charity work, one to five day tours, and exposure to a different language and culture. Having said that, you certainly don't need to learn Spanish to get by.

There is a short 9 hole golf course 5 minutes away with some breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. There is a longer course about 15 minutes away.

Climate: In short it is unbelievable. Because of being 5000 feet above sea it is very moderate. The average daily high in Feb. is only one degree lower than August. May is the warmest month. The rainy season is May to Sept. Apparently it rains almost every day then( evening) and by 11:00 in the morning you would never know it had rained. It is also the prettiest time of the year because everything becomes so much greener. Many Americans in the southern states go to this area of Mexico to get away from the extreme heat and humidity in the summer months.

The people: We have met so many new friends at Lake Chapala. The closest of our friends have ended up being from our own province, Ontario. The Mexican people have been nothing short of marvelous. They are very friendly and helpful in all ways, especially the staff at our complex. All the main shops and restaurants have staff that speak English.

Lake Chapala is Mexico's largest lake. We are on the north shore of the lake nestled up against the mountains. The lake itself is 5000 feet above sea level so the evenings are cool and the days warm. Our condo is 30 minutes from the international airport in Guadalajara (Mexico's second largest city) but feels like a million miles away as there is a mountain range between us. There is a very large expat community (10-15000 people) in this area. Because of this there is a huge range of activities: golf, tennis, theatre, performances, language and art classes, American legion, Canadian and American clubs, etc. etc. Satellite TV is standard and high speed internet is optional in the condo. There is a free hotspot in the complex.Our complex is Birds of Paradise.

Notes: While children are allowed, there is not a lot for school age children to do in our complex. There is a water park just down the street and if you are here for a long term and Spanish is spoken somewhat there may be opportunity for involvement in the community. We are on the ground floor, but there two steps into our condo so it is somewhat suitable for a wheelchair. There are no steps from our unit to the pool area, including hot tub. A list of local activities can be made available through the local publications as well as communication with ourselves. We expect guests to provide their own toiletries, etc., however, there are some supplies available to get started. There is a minimum one month rental.

Wonderful experience

I am currently in this rental unit at Birds of Paradise. This was my first time using Home Away so I was a little nervous, but it has been wonderful. I took a cab from Guadalajara Airport, and my cabbie knew exactly where the property was. Check in at the front gate was very thorough and I really appreciated that. The gate personnel are very helpful. The unit itself was spotless and much better than I anticipated. The furnishings are modern and clean. The decor is a mix of traditional and Mexican. The kitchen is very well stocked, and the beds are comfortable. Just need to unpack your bags, buy some food (very nearby are Walmart, Super Lake Grocery and El Torito) and you're ready to go. The neighbors (Ron and Maxine) are very nice and helpful. I feel very safe here as the security is top notch. They patrol the grounds constantly so it's very nice. The complex is very quiet, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. The staff here works very hard to keep it up. This unit comes with weekly maid service which is very nice. There is a lovely pool and hot tub but I haven't really had the chance to use them because of the rain. Oh well. I hope that I can return someday. I would highly recommend this unit.
