Charming apartment, wonderful neighborhood

We just returned from a great week in Amsterdam and loved our stay in this apartment. The location absolutely cannot be beat. It's within easy walking distance to all the major attractions, but well outside of the tourist core. Shops, cafes, and pubs abound (Eetcafe Rosereijn on Haarlemmerdijk was a favorite), and there are a number of small markets and grocery stores within a 5 minute walk or less. Public transit is easily accessible via the Nw. Willemsstraat tram stop a few blocks away. Although the neighborhood teems with activity, it's amazingly quiet at night.
Previous reviewers do not exaggerate about the steep, narrow, winding stairs in the apartment. This apartment would not be a good choice for anyone with mobility concerns or for families with young children. The stairs were intimidating at first, especially with luggage in tow. But after just a day or two, walking up and down the three flights of stairs in the apartment became second nature, and they contribute greatly to its charm. The apartment itself is spacious yet cozy. We prepared a couple of meals in the well-equipped kitchen and enjoyed planning our days over breakfast at the large dining table and relaxing in the living room at the end of the day. The apartment easily accommodated our party of three, and the second bath (half-bath) off the kitchen was a nice perk. (The main bath is on the top level next to the bedroom.)
It's worth noting that the apartment and its furnishings do show signs of wear. The walls and stairs are ready for a fresh coat of paint, some of the furniture is worn out, the rooftop terrace (a great feature on cool, clear nights) is cluttered with broken chairs, and the whole apartment could benefit from a thorough deep cleaning (there was a thick layer of dust under some furniture). If you're expecting 4-star luxury, this is not the place for you.
But if "cozy and comfortable" is your style, if you like to get away from the crowds of tourists and experience a city as the locals do, and if you value a responsive, easy-to-work-with apartment owner (we never met Mok, but handled all communication quite easily via e-mail), this could be a great option for you. The apartment became more and more charming to us as the week went on, and we certainly would not hesitate to stay here again on our next visit or recommend this rental to friends. We loved our stay here.
