UNIQUE APARTMENT: 18TH CENTURY GLAZED TILES (AZULEJOS) IN CITY CENTER

Bairro Alto Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, living room, dining room, 1 full bathroom, kitchen, sleeps 1 to 4

In the center of town, close to the Parliament, a short walking distance to Chiado and Bairro Alto, with their nightlife, shops, museums and theatres, and on the route of tram 28, the most scenic tram in Lisbon...

The building underwent full renovation in 2004 and the project was awarded the second prize in an yearly competition that appraises the reconstruction of old town buildings throughout Portugal. Its major source of beauty are the glazed tiles (azulejos), dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are different from floor to floor, thus rendering each apartment unique.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I saw the glazed tiles and the wooden floors and that was it -- decision taken! Also, I had attended school very close by, so everything felt like home.

Lovely apartment! So neat and special. Ana (by email) and Helena (who checked us in) were a pleasure. Both are easy to talk to and full of good information. Why stay in a cookie-cutter hotel when you can surround yourself with beautiful tiles, warm woods, and the clatter of a tram outside your window? We loved our time in Lisbon and in this apartment. We highly recommend both!

BEAUTIFUL

  • 5 of 5
The other reviews cover it all - the apartment has it all, perfect in every way, Ana and Helena are a delight! thank you both for everything x The photos are true and the description spot on! we were so pleased with the whole experience, and would highly recommend.
We followed someone's advice and took a taxi from the arrivals part of Lisbon airport - the driver said it would be 8 - 10 euros - on the meter it said nearly 8 euros, so we gave him 10 euros (bargain).
We especially enjoyed our days out to Belem and to the tile museum (nice little cafe there).
Would love to return, thank you

Great place to stay for the price

  • 5 of 5
This apartment represents a great value for the money. The location is close to tram 28, grocery stores, and other small shops. Ana, the owner, and Helena, who checked us in, were both very friendly and answered any questions we had. The apartment itself is huge with plenty of space for two people and even small children. The kitchen was a good size and was well-equipped to make decent meals in the apartment. The fridge itself was quite large. I stayed in another apartment back in 2010 in the same area. I searched for it when I was planning this trip, and not only was it more expensive than this 'azulejos' apartment, but it was smaller as well.

For those arriving into Lisbon from somewhere else, a taxi is probably the easiest way to get there. Have the taxi driver take you allow the West Tram 28 route to the apartment. Taxi drivers are known to scam tourists, so sound like you know where you are going. You could also take the metro and walk there if you are travelling light.

The only downside was that being close to the tram you could hear it pass by from time to time, but strategically closing windows should help with that.

In all, this is a great place to make a homebase for an extended stay in Lisbon. If you are only staying a few days, maybe a hotel is better, but for a week or longer stay, this is a great place to stay.

Amazing apartment!

  • 5 of 5
I stayed in this apartment with two friends and the apartment was PERFECT! The location is great, right in the heart of Bairro Alto with shopping, great views, bakeries and restaurants. The apartment was plenty big enough and very clean. I would HIGHLY recommend this apartment to anyone. Disclaimer: there is quite a hill to get up in order to get towards city center; however Tram 28 runs right in front of the apartment, so that's always an option. Also, the stairs are quite steep to get to the apartment, but the view is great from the balconies off the main room. Overall, we LOVED our stay in Lisbon and would love to come back and stay here. Thanks again for everything Ana and Helena! It was great and we love your city!!

Nice Lisbon apartment

  • 5 of 5
The apartment is well located, in an old building with azulejos both on the facade and inside. It is in a nice neighborhood and staying there gives you a sense that you belong to this community. The apartment is quite comfortable for two persons, with all necessary amenities. We enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it for a stay in Lisbon.

My only regret is that we only stayed 3 nights! We [arrived1/2 hour late] & the chap waiting to let us in could not have been more gracious & helpful. For a North American the initial impression from the street is a bit uncertain, but this is misleading & ultimately what travel is all about: discovery of what lies beneath. The apt. was very clean & good value for money, even for the two of us. We really had a sense of being in a genuine community within the city. Turn to the right & you walk to the heart of the City in 15 mins. Turn left & keep going straight past the P. Bemto & you come to where the locals eat. Next time we shall arrange at least a 1 week stay. Also, Ana was very helpful & efficient in making the arrangements.

Five to ten minutes walking distance you'll find bohemian Bairro Alto, with its nightlife and alternative shops. A couple of steps further and you're in Chiado, a more sophisticated district, with old-style cafes, theaters, and renowned shops.

Head in that same direction strolling along the narrow streets closer to the river and you can enjoy nice views of Lisbon and the river from Miradouro (Belvedere) Santa Catarina.

Walking a few minutes the opposite direction as you leave the apartment, you find S. Bento street with its antique shops and the national parliament. Santos, labeled the 'design district' for its cluster of shops dedicated to design, is 2,000 feet (600m) away.

Principe Real, with the botanic garden, several gay bars and clubs, interior design shops, and more antique shops, is located 2,000 feet (600m) from the apartment.

To go to Alfama and the castle or the flea market on a Saturday or Tuesday morning, catch tram 28 (for 1 mile, 1.6 km) (the stop heading in that direction is located on the street behind the building).

At the nearby Santos station you can take the train to visit Estoril and Cascais or enjoy their beach (30 minute train ride).

The Marina Doca Alcantara is 1.7 miles (2.7 km) away, with a direct 2 minute train connection to Santos station (which is less than 10 minutes walking from the apartment).

Lisbon synagogue is 1 mile (1.6 km) away.

Cafés, pastry shops, small groceries, restaurants, and old-fashioned shops go without mentioning, as there are so many of them all around...
