About Andy or Bob

Nature, beautiful landscapting and proximity to the sea compelled us to become stewards of this property. We love the land and hope that you'll share in this magical experience

Andy or Bob purchased this cottage in 2005
Why Andy or Bob chose Pahoa

We have been vacationing in Puna, Hawaii for over eleven years renting a friend's home. After becoming attached to the native culture, tropical landscape, and outdoor activities, we decided to build our own home. We designed and constructed the cottage based on our eleven years of vacation living, culling features from the many homes we saw in the area and tailoring them to our Hawaiian lifestyle pursuit of comfortable simplicity.

What makes this cottage unique

Steep terrain reveals spectacular 170 degree view of the Pacific ocean and exposes the property to gentle trade winds. proximity of rain forest ensures a symphony of night sounds and a remote, jungle feel at your doorstep.

All wood construction (cedar walls and roof, eucalyptus floors, Ipe deck) is rare in the tropics. Open the door and smell cedar and the other woods.

A rare treat

This place has to be seen to be comprehended. I was really impressed by how meticulously the house is constructed; not a single detail was overlooked. It's also decorated and arranged with incredbly good taste. The queen size bed faces to the southeast towards two oversized sliding glass doors, offering a broad view of untouched jungle to wake up to. Facing east provides a panoramic view of the ocean. This is truly one of my favorite places on earth, and I have no doubt that I'll be coming back. Bob and Andy were very helpful and accomodating as I made my reservation on short notice.

The abundance of fresh fruit in the kitchen on my arrival was an especially nice touch. I feel that I got much more than I paid for.

Mahi Oli Oli is paradise

Submitted: January 7, 2013 Stayed: December 2012
My husband and I stayed here for the first week of our honeymoon - it was heaven. Not a stone left unturned!!! We took advantage of the fresh produce from the garden, rainbows every afternoon and pure tranquility.

There was alot to see around the area - so we didn't have to travel to far :)

Can't wait to return!!
Owner's Response: We are happy to know that our guests find themselves "in heaven" at Mahi Oli'Oli. It gives us pleasure to learn that this guest took advantage of local Farmers' Markets making the most of Puna's amazing fertility and variety. Come stay with us to experience the old Hawaii, a rural paradise unspoiled by commercial and resort development.

I still dream of this house...

5 of 5
Submitted: February 18, 2012 Stayed: November 2010
I stayed at Andy & Bob's cottage for a last-minute vacation during Thanksgiving 2010... and I still dream of it. The cottage is even better than pictured, extremely well-designed, peaceful, beautiful, romantic, restorative. I have been to Hawaii many times (my brother lived in Oahu for a few years), so I always appreciate those places that feel laid-back and conjure off-the-beaten path old Hawaii, not a generic hotel.

I flew in on the night flight, so I stopped at the Hilo Farmer's market to load up on fresh fruits, coffee and flowers. Though as others had mentioned, there were fresh fruits and flowers waiting at the cottage, such a nice touch! I loved going to the natural hot pond morning or evening, visiting Kailoni for yoga classes (and even a delicious Thanksgiving dinner!), and taking a night hike out to view the lava flowing into the ocean. It was a perfect vacation — completely soulful, just what I needed after working day and night for months to launch a new product.

The owners and their local manager were very responsive to my every need (even letting me check out later due to a night flight), and returned my deposit promptly with a very nice thank you note after my departure. I recently moved to the east coast, so getting to Hawaii isn't as easy as being in California, but when I go back, I want to return here.

I can't recommend this place highly enough to those seeking peace and beauty in a harmonious setting.

Owner's Response: Innkeepers cannot force guests to take in beauty and to enjoy the bounty of Hawaii's rural paradise, so we are thrilled by this review which assures us that our guest really understood how to recognize and exploit the possibilities arising during a Puna vacation. If you are interested in Mahi Oli'Oli, please ask us about the adventures/activities described by this guest. We'll be happy to provide information to help you have an unforgettable experience.

Just Wonderful

5 of 5
Submitted: December 6, 2011 Stayed: November 2011
Thank you Bob and Andy for sharing your wonderful cottage! Everything looked lovely when we arrived (including the tropical flower arrangement). Spending time on the wrap around lanai watching the wildlife (geckos and wild turkeys), cooking in your well stocked kitchen and walking on your jungle trail were all perfect. Even though we got to feel like we were "out in the middle of nowhere" the funny little town of Pahoa was just right down the road. We had great food at Kaleo's and take out from Boogie Woogie Pizza. Plus, there are so many things to do close by from Volcano National Park to The Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden (not to be missed). Oh, and the shower was great! I loved the living off the grid experience and we had no trouble at all with the battery power. It added something to the experience for me. Thank you again, and we will definitely be recommending Mahi Oli'Oli.
Owner's Response: A review like yours assures us that hosting appreciative guests is the best reward for listing on HomeAway. We hope that renters will be moved by the beauty of Hawaii's least developed island and will rest and find renewal in the novelty and simplicity of our rural, tropical environment. We are grateful that respectful, thoughtful people like you find us through HomeAway & VRBO. Please send your friends and relatives to Mahi Oli'Oli for a glimpse into Puna lifestyle or for a longer, life-altering experience in paradise.
Aloha,
Andy & Bob

tranquil, natural and easy living

I had a wonderful stay. I have to applaud the owners who thought of every detail, down to the cute little pond on the property; you can tell this was a labor of love for them. While I felt like I was in the country, in nature, the creature comforts were there, too, like the gorgeous kitchen & bath. The airy feeling of the house blurs the lines between being indoors and out. The views are amazing; I loved waking up with my coffee and the sun on the lanai, watching the sun rise off the ocean, and falling asleep to a million stars at night amid the sounds of nature. Very fun stay.
