Guestbook comments from the owner
By: Kim UIf you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience in Hawaii, then this is the place to do it! The house is located in a beautiful spot, with lovely veiws over the ocean, a few miles away. Privacy, solitude, romance. Well-equipped, well designed interior with comfortable furnishings. The deck is a great place to have morning coffee, or a romantic dinner. The area is distinctive - no over-commercialism here!! Pahoa is a funky little town, and Hilo is a favourite of mine. Bob and Andy have stocked the book shelves with great reading material and information so you can find fun things to do within easy distances. Thanks for sharing this lovely cottage with other adventurous travelers!

Nature, beautiful landscapting and proximity to the sea compelled us to become stewards of this property. We love the land and hope that you'll share in this magical experience

Andy or Bob purchased this cottage in 2005

We have been vacationing in Puna, Hawaii for over eleven years renting a friend's home. After becoming attached to the native culture, tropical landscape, and outdoor activities, we decided to build our own home. We designed and constructed the cottage based on our eleven years of vacation living, culling features from the many homes we saw in the area and tailoring them to our Hawaiian lifestyle pursuit of comfortable simplicity.

Steep terrain reveals spectacular 170 degree view of the Pacific ocean and exposes the property to gentle trade winds. proximity of rain forest ensures a symphony of night sounds and a remote, jungle feel at your doorstep.

All wood construction (cedar walls and roof, eucalyptus floors, Ipe deck) is rare in the tropics. Open the door and smell cedar and the other woods.

A rare treat

  • 5 of 5
This place has to be seen to be comprehended. I was really impressed by how meticulously the house is constructed; not a single detail was overlooked. It's also decorated and arranged with incredbly good taste. The queen size bed faces to the southeast towards two oversized sliding glass doors, offering a broad view of untouched jungle to wake up to. Facing east provides a panoramic view of the ocean. This is truly one of my favorite places on earth, and I have no doubt that I'll be coming back. Bob and Andy were very helpful and accomodating as I made my reservation on short notice.

The abundance of fresh fruit in the kitchen on my arrival was an especially nice touch. I feel that I got much more than I paid for.

Hawaiian Paradise

  • 5 of 5
Mahi Oli Oli was all that we expected and more. The details of the house, beautiful landscaping, and view of the ocean are amazing. We could've sat on the lanai or walked around the property our entire honeymoon and had our Hawaiian vacation fulfilled. This is the perfect romantic getaway! We can't wait to come back and were so sorry when it was time to leave this piece of paradise!

Beautiful retreat in paradise

  • 5 of 5
Mahi Oli´Oli is a romantic hide-away, a peaceful, serene retreat, situated to take advantage of the wide land, open sky and ocean views. We could have spent our days just there, meditating, doing yoga, resting in the hammock, taking in the beauty of this heaven on earth. The esthetic landscaping is stunning and it soothes the mind and the soul to just sit on the lanai letting the eyes wander. The cottage itself is tastefully decorated and the colors inside just blend in with the colors of the land. Everywhere we could feel the loving and careful touch the owners. Our son loved to sit at the pond observing the fish and the frogs or explore along the little jungle path to the lava tube, or pick some fresh limes. We also enjoyed stargazing on the deck at night to the symphony of the coqui frogs. We had only three days and were driving and hiking a lot, so we will definitely come back to Mahi Oli´Oli with more time for just being there. Heartfelt gratitude to the owners and the caretaker for creating and maintaining this special place.

The most difficult place to leave...ever!

  • 5 of 5
We can't begin to express what a treasure Mahi Oli'Oli is! We've stayed in various rentals in the Puna District and this is the one we will return to again. And again. If only it would be soon!

We often like to get out and explore the area, but here we did not want to leave. We literally spent entire days just laying in the hammock or lounging on the deck. You feel like you are in a botanical garden (which we also enjoyed eating from!). And it's both mesmerizing and calming to just sit on the lanai and watch the clouds and passing showers roll past. At 500' elevation and with the expansive view of the ocean along the whole horizon, you feel on top of the world. I tell you, I never wanted to leave that hammock...and stayed in it until just shortly before checking out.

The home is just the right size for two. The kitchen so well appointed (real dishes and glassware!), clean and laid out with such organization! (As a "novice chef" my number one pet peeve in rentals is a disorganized utensil drawer...this kitchen was just right.) The bathroom is dreamy and spacious - I love the lower faucet for rinsing just your feet if you need to. Well thought out! And we never had any concerns with living "off the grid" for the first time. Thankfully, the sun fully re-charged us everyday. We could get used to this type of living.

Next time we visit, we'll try to plan to stay when it's not the full moon, though. It was so bright we actually couldn't see the spectacular stars that other guests mentioned. And it did peak in on us in the middle of the night. But that was just part of the magic of Mahi Oli'Oli.

And one caveat for guests not familiar with the Coqui frogs. Their sound is sweet at first, but bring ear plugs to get a sound sleep if you're not used to constant "jungle" sounds. I found it relaxing for the most part, but sometimes did pop in the plugs. :-)

Our local friends from Pahoa came for breakfast on the lanai one perfect sunny morning, and said they would definitely recommend this place for their own out-of-town guests. I know we'll be back...even if it is so heartbreaking to leave!

Mahalo nui loa for sharing your lovely home!

What a beautiful well maintained oasis in a Tropical jungle

  • 5 of 5
WOW! What an amazing place. We arrived after dark for a two week stay. Driving down the driveway and listening to the jungle night sounds was an unforgettable experience. My husband and I live a very busy life and were looking to find an out of the way place to just relax and reconnect. We found that in this home. We absolutely loved the peace and solitude that surrounds this home and the area. The home is very well maintained, super clean and had all of the kitchen amenities that we needed. We loved the indoor "outdoor" shower. You have done an amazing job on the tropical landscaping and making the property a very relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. We loved the grounds so much that we did very little sightseeing (except for every morning when I became a surfing widow and my husband went to Isaac Hale park for a couple hours) and spent a lot of time on the stargazing deck. Waking up each morning to the sunrise across the water view was so relaxing. Thanks for having fruit trees in the yard and allowing us to enjoy lemons, limes and bananas.

The neighbors are very respectful of your privacy and very welcoming to the guests. We were invited to a bonfire and dinner one day and drinks at the other neighbors another day. We felt so at home at both the cottage and the area. We went to the farmers market at Uncle Roberts on Wednesday night, which is a must do. We also went to the Space market in Seaview which was our favorite market. On Friday night we went into Pahoa and listened to live music and people watched. What an eclectic mix of people.

We found that two weeks was not enough time in the peace and tranquility that Bob and Andy have created so next time we are staying longer.

Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise!!!

Mahi Oli Oli is paradise

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here for the first week of our honeymoon - it was heaven. Not a stone left unturned!!! We took advantage of the fresh produce from the garden, rainbows every afternoon and pure tranquility.

There was alot to see around the area - so we didn't have to travel to far :)

Can't wait to return!!
