|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
This newly remodeled guest house is located in the magical neighborhood of Puako. You will awake to the sound of the ocean, the breeze of the palm trees and the smells of Hawaii. You will share the dry sandy beach in front of the home with sea turtles and the seas with abundant sea life and whales (winter season).
The guest house has wood flooring, stainless steel appliances, 2 full bathrooms, flat screen television, WiFi and Hawaiian furnishings.
Puako is a beautiful blend of old Hawaii charm and quietude. It is the sunniest place on the big island with only 8-10 inches of rainfall per year.
Enjoy morning walks the historic Petroglyph park along oceans trails of black lava and white corral. Or take the home's beach cruiser bikes for a ride to explore the many beaches along Puako. Spend your day relaxing on the shady lanai enjoying the trade winds.
The white sandy beaches and clear deep blue water are home to hundreds of sea turtles and tropical sea life. Puako has some of the best snorkeling and diving on the Big Island and is a wonderful spot to explore marine life for either a novice snorkeler or an advanced SCUBA diver. In winter months, you can watch mother whales training their calves; a truly miraculous sight!
Golf is available at many wonderful courses through the island (the closest courses is less than a 5 min drive from Puako.)
The guest house is close to wonderful spas, shopping and dining. This vacation spot truly has something for everyone.

We stayed for 10 nights in February 2010 and were 100%satisfied. The house is exquisite and immaculate with beautiful wood floors, comfortable furniture, comfortable beds, precise air conditioning, and a kitchen to die for! The counter tops are a work of art. We saw numerous whales right in front of the house every day and the tide pool had many large green turtles. The small village of Puako is great for walking or riding bike and the Puako store is handy. Sunsets are magnificent and peaceful. Wonderful beaches close by ( Hapuna, 69, Mauna Kea etc) but we most enjoyed sitting right out on the ocean front 25 feet in front of the house watching whales, reading, etc. with not another soul in sight. We have stayed at Hapuna, Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani but this is our favorite. We are going back next year.
Since we love the area in general we sought accommodation in Puako and found thus This This is a lovely ohana. Beautifully done and maintained. We quickly made our acquaintance with the lovely couple staying in the main house so we never felt intrusive going to the shore line in front. I found the kitchen lacked a few items that would have been useful like a dish suitable for microwave cooking. Whenever we needed anything Peter was responsive in a timely manner. We loved it and wouldn't hesitate to return!
The Ohana on the Big Island was absolutely lovely. The kitchen was adequate. It didn't seem as if many people did much cooking with the "stuff" that was there, but everything we needed worked out. The only downside was the "main house" that was directly in front of the Ohana. We lucked out in that it was occupied only the first night of the 10 nights we were there. If it had been occupied they could see right into the bedroom and we could see right into their main room. The lights from that house occluded the lovely starlite skies. But as I said no one was there except for the first night. I would say that was the only downside of our stay. The turtles were abundant on the shoreline too.
We just got home from 5 days at this awesome little guest house, and we wish we were still there! This house is beautifully maintained, and is situated on a secluded beach and turtle reserve. Make sure to wear water shoes though, as the lava rocks are rough on the feet! We came to the Big Island with our 4 year old and our 10 week old, and this rental was perfect for our little family. Peter, the local property manager, was on site our first full day there and he was so nice to us and gave us some really good tips for things to do and even recommended a great app for our space-loving preschooler. The employees at the Puako General Store were super friendly as well, and there were tons of healthy organic food options at this little store (we were pleasantly surprised by that!). Minutes away from one of the best beaches on the island (Hapuna Beach), but you can beat the crowds by hanging out on the beach in your backyard at this house and watch a ton of sea turtles while you are at it! All in all, we give this place two thumbs way up!
We were there for 9 days in April and I wish we were still there enjoying the sun, beach and all those turtles. As the previous reviewers said, this guest house is situated above a garage and behind the owner's house. From the Lanai, you can partly see the ocean but it is a decent size Lanai you can sit and relax and enjoy the breeze. Inside the house is immaculate and incredibly well kept. Two great bathrooms come in handy when there is more than two of you. Our daughter slept in the living room and she had no problems. The kitchen is well stocked and fully functional. We cooked quite a bit, getting fresh fresh from the Da Fish House. The owner Joe and the daughters who you need to contact for contract were there and they were incredibly nice, curteous and understanding.
The beach in front of the house is just great! Just sit there and listen to the waves and see all the sea turtles. Nightly sunset is incredible! I think I need to stop writing about this place as it's making me feel sad that I am not there! I would go back in a heart beat.
We stayed from March 13th to March 30th 2014.It was pristine accommodations with incredible frontage to turtle mecca. We have stayed in Puako 3 times now and this was by far the nicest place and unit.Great Lanai excellent interior and furnishings.Daria was excellent to deal with.We spent alot of time on property in beginning, met owners next door on either side.It was old Hawaii next door and the people were very friendly.Dogs were not
an issue for us as matter of fact Sandy ,Hilo and the other dogs were very friendly.Amazing property and the Saturday night jazz session was incredible to listen to.Owner Joe was very friendly as was Peter property manager.I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys being away from the resorts and hustle and bustle. The bikes were very handy for riding down Puako Drive. It was a great stay would rent again.
I only wrote the "Above A Garage" part because it is ironically true. There are no cars in and out, no garage doors opening and closing. In other words, one would never know they were above a garage. It is extremely QUIET!
This one bedroom is great. Extremely tasteful, nicely appointed. Two bathrooms is nice...
Location is so great. You are "right there" on the water. There were so many Turtles...and whales...and fish when snorkeling...amazing. Even saw a Monk Seal right out front there.
Excellent beaches with parking are fairly close (2 - 3 miles.)
So the apartment itself is tops, the location is tops, I can not rate this lower than 5 stars. I would not hesitate to recommend this place, and I would not hesitate to go back.
Our Puako guesthouse is tucked away from the main highway, on the ocean side of Puako. Walk across our grass to the beach to see the Green Sea Turtles year, explore the amazing Puako tide pools and watch the beautiful Puako sunsets. In the winter months the humpback whales can be seen off our beaches. Puako gives the feeling of the Old Hawaiian Beach Town, yet it is within driving distance to wonderful resorts, restaurants and golf courses. Puako is also known for its great snorkeling and scuba diving. Puako is ideal for a relaxing vacation.
