The area of the Eastern
Docklands dates back to the XIX century and as the name implies, had a booming
trade with the Dutch East Indies. This grew less and less after the great
depression and the area fell into decay. Nowadays it’s a shining example of modern
architecture, with a vibrant residential area at its’ core. The Oosterpark is a
must see and the Tropenmuseum shouldn’t be missed. The Dappenbuurt has the
second largest market of Amsterdam, with produce from the Dutch Antilles,
Surinam, Morrocco and Indonesia, reflecting the areas past glories. Well worth
a visit is Steigereiland, where many of the residents designed their own
houses. There are plenty of specialised delis and a strong recommendation is
“Jerry’s Eetcafe” with a wonderful view from the restaurant and an excellent
kitchen.”Café Hesp” has one of the best terraces in the city and a terrific
view of the harbour. Getting to and from the centre is easy with a choice of
tram, (9), metro (51, 53, 54) and even the train.
