Our extended family has vacationed and lived on Poor Farm Road for over 70 years. The owners purchased the home for their family to enjoy on year-round visits to Vermont (especially for Island events in the summer and ice fishing in the winter) and we have since moved to back to the area.

Sara Comeau purchased this house in 2007

It's an easy, simple house to enjoy. There are both large spaces and cozy ones that meet the needs of large and small families. The easterly view only feet from Lake Champlain is fabulous, especially at sun rise and sun set. The road is great for walking and biking. You may even want to take a plane ride with our neighbor!

The Islands are still a gem unknown to most people, so it is still intimate and very relaxed. That said, in recent years, more services have developed to cater to visitors' interests -- restaurants, galleries, water sports, events for families, craft and music festivals, and the like. South Alburgh is also very central to many of the region's offerings -- lakes, mountains, bike paths, southern Quebec, New York's Adirondacks, and north western Vermont (including Burlington).

Charming Home with beautiful location!

My wife took me here for my birthday with friends. The home was very cozy and beautifully situated a stones throw from Lake Champlain. However the house had not been thoroughly cleaned between visits, with dead bugs underneath the couch and on the window sills, hair and makeup on the counters, and just general dirtiness from the previous renters. We also washed a load of clothes and the dark's came out very faded and dingy due to the water treatment. It ruined two of my shirts. Apparently they treat the water with bleach. It was so strong it made gag while taking a shower. I don't mean to be harsh but these were a few significant issues that should be addressed.
Owner's Response: We are very surprised and concerned by your review, especially in light of the lovely review given by your wife on 2/13/14.

We did our best to accommodate your visit with less than two day’s notice, making special exceptions in a number of ways for a short term rental. It was our understanding that the two of you would be the only visitors, however, it seems there were additional guests, possibly a dog (although not mentioned or paid for), and other issues resulting in above average cleaning costs.

We are sorry if something was missed in the cleaning for your visit. The house is professionally cleaned after every visit. We regularly inspect the property afterwards and know that she wipes down surfaces. Insects are sometimes a challenging aspect of life in an old farmhouse and on the Lake. We will remind the cleaner about both of these concerns.

We disclose in our information on the house that there are high levels of sulfur in the well water in the Islands. We use an advanced water treatment system that uses Clorox to manage the sulfur. The water chemistry changes frequently and we make adjustments to the system when we are notified of any problems, like a sulfur smell. No one has previously shared that the chlorine levels were a problem and it should rarely be an issue as the activated carbon filter removes excess chlorine. However, we will implement a practice of washing color item with sheets and towels to make sure the chlorine is not fading things. We stayed in the house the weekend after you, post cleaning, and did not note any issues with the water system or cleanliness of the property.

As we disclose in our welcome sheet sent to each interested visitor, this is an 1880’s farmhouse. It was updated in the 1970s and we make no attempt to hide the somewhat dated style as pictured in the dining kitchen area. It is a simple but comfortable home. We do our best to update the house in some way each year, including several new mattresses and linens, all new toilets, living room furniture, faucets and a drinking water system.

We always hope if visitors have concerns or any issues during their stay that they address them by contacting us during the stay so that we address them and make their stay more enjoyable.

The house was very comfortable and spacious. I have to say, the bed linens were wonderful, if I wasn't so excited to get up and look out the big picture window at the amazing view, I would have stayed in bed all day! The view is truly special. We stayed in winter and we had a small, quiet piece of lake to watch the comings and goings of local ice fishers. The community is great. The location is really neat. My husband and I said we would go back in a heartbeat!

And last, but definitely not least, the property owner was wonderful to work with. She sent thoughtful emails and was available when I had questions. I would recommend this rental!

Great House,Family reunions, fishing and boating.

We had a family reunion at in August at the farm house. It’s beautifully set up for cooking, dining, get together and enjoying the lake. If you need some privacy, the library or the living room is far enough away from the action to read/watch TV or just enjoy the view of the lake. We enjoyed just sitting on the front deck with its view of the lake and the boaters going by. The lake traffic is light and there was very little noise. We brought our boat and moored it at the dock (use of the dock comes with the house). Great fishing, boating, easy access to put the boat in and pull it out, and no problem with parking the boat trailer. Just down the street is a seaplane operation, you can take lessons or go for a 30 minute tour of the area. The beds were comfortable, lovely linens, towels and the kitchen was well equipped. We hope to rent the farm house again next summer. The only thing that we would like to add is a better gas grill. The gas grill was operable but it’s time for a new one.
The owner was great and always available for questions or any needs will had, pictures are very accurate. Great vacation rental, this is the fourth Vermont lake rental our family has done and this was by far the best accommodations.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. We are so glad that our efforts to both make the house wonderful and advertise it fairly were appreciated. Thanks for the input re the grill. We have just cleaned it and replaced the burners. It is working like a charm and will be ready for you next year.

Our multi-generation family spent a week here and loved every minute. We live on a river, but waking to the placid blue waters of Lake Champlain was so much better! The house is spacious, comfortable, and well kept. The view is lovely and the neighborhood quiet. We enjoyed spending some days reading on the deck, fishing from the dock, and walking along the shore. The house is one hour from Burlington, VT and Montreal, Quebec. Check them both out while you're here. Don't miss the Shelburne Museum, ECHO, and Alburg Dunes State Park. Swimming at the park is great fun and a cool experience! We hated to leave, but are grateful for our time in Alburg. Thank you Molly!

Just a note - the house has 2.5 baths, but both showers are on the second floor. This is a bit of a challenge for elderly guests who may have difficulty climbing stairs.

Notes:
Discounts for multi-week rentals. Large aluminum dog kennel can be made available. Please keep in mind the house does not have air conditioning. This is very common in Vermont, but we know it can be unexpected especially for people used to homes with central air. This house is maintained as what is locally called a 'camp.' Families enjoy time cooling down in the water and there is usually a breeze (if not a strong wind) on the Lake. We have fans available in each bedroom (a ceiling fan in the master and the others are box or window fans).
