The cottage is on Peaks Island, one of the many small islands in Casco Bay, off of the coast of Portland. Once you take the twenty minute ferry ride to the island, you will find a relaxed atmosphere: you can enjoy the small sandy beaches, rent bikes or kayaks, or just walk around the island's three mile perimeter. In addition to a few restaurants, island attractions include a small art gallery, a grocery store, an ice cream shop, an adorable library, a playground, and some historic WWII battlements. If you'd like to see the sites in Portland, home to many fabulous restaurants, museums, and shops, just hop on the ferry and enjoy the change of pace the city offers. You can have the best of both worlds on Peaks Island.

Sweet house on a great island.

My husband and I took our children and their grandfather and uncle for a week. The house is welcoming, well laid out, and very cute. It's also nicely equipped for a week at the beach with children (toys, books, etc.), and they loved their bedroom. Both of my children (3 and 6) loved the island -- a safe, manageable place to call their own. We biked a lot, got up early to get donuts at the shop by the ferry, heard a children's concert, went to an art opening, played at the school playground, and made sand castles. The water is cold, but we had a week of hot weather and went in a lot. We got just what we wanted from a week on an island in Maine. Oh, and we didn't drive anywhere for a whole week! We did go to Portland for a day, but that just meant a short walk to the ferry. Enjoy.
