Frequent so-happy visitor
Carmel has always been a favorite place - and for about twenty years, every time I go to Carmel, I make an effort to stay only in this wonderful property. I have stayed just a week, and taken the house for a month at a time a number of times. Both are fantastic.
It is just outside town, feels extremely private, with a wonderful view of Point Lobos and of the water. There is a beach just off the private yard, and a very long trail along the beach or up on a trail that leads into Carmel.
Honestly, everyone I have ever gone there with spends most of the time cooking meals, sitting around on the decks outside or sitting around in front of the fire inside. Be sure to ask for two loads of wood, because you won't want to leave the house very often!

We have stayed in all three cottages for more than a decade. Each visit is better than the prior year's. Our children were small when we started renting and they're now in their early twenties. Our family and our friends' families all look forward to these escapes. Highlights are night hikes along the coast, Point Lobos hikes, Big Sur hikes, Palo Corona hikes, Mill Creek hikes, Garland Ranch hikes, and Monterey Bay crab.....Recently we've spotted condors, dolphins, whales of several types, otters, sea lions, and seals. Mass across the street at the Monastery is special for those so inclined. A very special place that has been cared for lovingly. Thank you!
My wife and I wed on Monastery Beach in 2004 with this property overlooking our ceremony. I promised her one day I'd get her this house, and on our 10 year wedding anniversary I gave it to her... if only for a week. But what a beautiful week. What a beautiful property, what a beautiful view. The perfect setting for... well just about anything. You can have a romantic getaway, you can have your children run around and play, you can have your extended family come stay (and watch the kids for that romantic time you're looking for), you can just sit on the beach chairs and drink a hot cup of coffee or a couple glass as of wine if you prefer. If it gets too cold you can go inside and not miss a thing. You can light a fire in the fireplace long after dark and still make s'mores. You have instant beach access and access to trails that lead all the way north to Carmel State Beach, no need to drive. Private, even with two other houses on property, and hardly any beach traffic on the north side of Monastery Beach. This main house is a Historic property, built in 1875, and has aged like a fine wine. You will feel the charm and joy of this property, and you will never want to leave. It's quite telling when your 3yo daughter wants to leave the park because "I wanna go back to da beach house!" to see mermaids and whales.
This was the fourth year my husband and I have stayed in these cottages with our dog and we loved each cottage. They are just above the ocean surf, but not in the middle of a subdivision. The views are spectacular looking out toward Point Lobos and the bay, with outdoor benches for savoring the sunsets. The 3 cottages are private and in the middle of state park lands, with a great trail starting right outside the property that goes along the ocean into Carmel. There is a lovely little beach and rocks right by the house, down some stairs to it is easy to access. The houses are very clean with beautiful linen and comfortable furniture. This year we chose the larger Whalers Historical House because my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter (5 Years old) joined us for the weekend. They were amazed by the location and great views. We loved the big bedroom upstairs with a view from the bed across the bay. The house is so close to Carmel that we enjoy touring our favorite galleries and restaurants. Even closer is the Sea Harvest fish market and restaurant, less than a mile away, as well as a handy Safeway. We highly recommend a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium with amazing and beautiful displays for all ages; they also have a terrific restaurant for lunch.
We just returned from my annual Birthday trip to the Whaler's Cottage. As usual it was a five star experience! The cottage is so special in every way. The ocean views, the comfortable cottage, the walking trail close by,the large expansive lawn to just sit back and relax and absorb all the beauty! What more can I say? My husband and I have lived and traveled all over the world and this spot is on our top 10 list of glorious places! The owners,Patrick and Sara are just the best. They are always available to help make your whole trip fantastic in every way. I have already booked for next year. Many thanks from," the birthday girl",aka Maryellen.
We have stayed at the cottages twice now and will be back as often as possible. Most reviews are about amenities and things to do nearby...the cottages have just about everything you need however we never wanted to leave (so I'm not going to provide any nearby amenities info). BBQ'ing, walking the beach or on the trails, fires in the fireplace (and on the beach), and watching the abundant ocean wildlife was plenty for our vacation. The Whisler family are wonderful to work with and responded quickly to our questions/requests. My only hesitation in writing this review is that others will learn about this amazing place and the availability will be reduced! We are looking forward to staying there again in the future and will be bringing more family and friends to share in the experience!
My husband and I have rented many homes on VRBO. We have always been happy with our rentals, but this property is #1 with us. Everything about this experience is just excellent. The owners are very professional and helpful. The property itself is drop dead gorgeous. I have been going to Carmel for my April birthday for many years and this cottage is the best gift I could ever have! The cottage is clean, comfortable and has everything you need for a long stay. The view and the postion of this home gives you the glory of the ocean along with privacy, and a stunning view of the sunset each night. There is also a great walking trail right outside the door which gives fabulous views of the ocean and Carmel. This cottage is not to be missed. We have already booked for next year and hope to stay a bit longer next time. Thank you to Patrick,Mark and Sara for the gift of this glorious place.
