We arrived at the Cordell cabin on a sunny Thursday afternoon. The view was just as it was posted online along with a clean home equipped with whatever we needed. Early Friday we left for the Buffalo Round Up in Custer Park and later we visited Mount Rushmore and the Needles Highway.
There were four of us and we found it to be a comfortable home where did most of our cooking. We highly recommend this home as a getaway from the city and hotel life. It was quiet and we only heard the whispering trees. We slept great with our windows open and enjoyed our refreshments on the deck. We would come back again.
The drive up and down was spectacular with new views around each corner.

Great cabin clean and very peaceful. The drive up to the cabin is not as bad as most people say. Had no kids with me but cabin had lots of games and toys for them. Kitchen was well stock plus a lots extras. Watch out for the cows roaming freely on drive to the cabin. On our last day we woke up to 3 to 4 inches of snow. What a big surprise, so early in September! Enjoyed our stay!!
The serenity and the peacefulness of the Hideaway was outstanding and is a beautiful setting to enjoy time together as a family. The large deck looking out over the hills is a perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine. Though this cabin is in the heart of the Black Hills, it is isolated from the busyness of the highways and main streets of the nearby towns and tourist attractions. Our family of four fit perfectly into the cabin with plenty of room for all.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Loved having the extra room to spread out and appreciated all the extras-coolers, beach towels, laundry facilities, and even the little extras like spices, sugar, coffee, tin foil, baggies etc-we downsized to a smaller car before this vacation and it was nice not to have to pack all the extras we usually tote along. Description of the cabin and pictures were spot on but you have to see the view in person to truly appreciate how wonderful it is. Just a handful of other homes on the "mountain" make it extra nice-so peaceful and secluded. Reasonably close proximity to all the attractions in the area, plus beautiful Pactola Lake (rent a pontoon!) are added bonuses. There is a nice beach on Pactola as well as nearby Sheridan Lake that we didn't have time to visit but are nice options if you're looking to take a swim. The owners made the rental process easy and enjoyable-very professional and friendly. We had planned on making better use of the kitchen in the home but the great choice of dining establishments in Hill City and Custer won out more often. Cell reception (we have Verizon) was excellent in the home, as well as our 3G. We did need to use a computer one day to order a textbook for my daughter so we just went to the library in Hill City-tiny but friendly folks and free computer use for visitors. The layout of the cabin wouldn't work for everyone, which the owners are quite upfront about, but for us it was the perfect place to stay and I hope we have the opportunity to stay again.
This cabin stay was far more than we thought it would be; The 12 minute drive it takes to get to Hill City is part of the experience. The peaceful surroundings, the hill top views to the wild life that walks up to the front door. We would recommend this cabin to everyone. It is set up for a couple to a family of 6 comfortably. The spiral stair case is part of the homes charm.
The use of a full kitchen to the laundry area made this a very comfortable stay. The lower level appears to be set up great for kids. We did not get a chance to use it, but we would love to bring the family here to get the full use of the home.
The cabin is set center of all the attractions that one would enjoy during their visit to the Black Hills. We could not imagine staying anywhere else.
Clean, comfortable, convenient, charm, views and extremely inviting. The home looks just like the pictures posted on HomeAway.

This mountain top cabin was exactly as depicted in the pictures. It was very clean and cozy. The Cordell's were great and answered any questions we had prior to renting their home. We were visiting SD for Sturgis Bike Week and the drive up the mountain with a pickup and bike trailer was a little difficult. The first few trips on the bike were a bit frightening but did get easier each time. If you are looking for a place to stay and have the "Sturgis experience" this is quite a drive from Sturgis, The Buffalo Chip and Full Throttle Salon; but if you want peace and quiet this is a great place.
Centrally located, well-stocked, and beautiful. Drive in is a challenge, as the final few miles are on gravel and many hairpin turns. Once there, you are in a pine forest paradise. Our teen boys loved the separate downstairs apartment. We at most of our meals in or brought picnic lunches. Restaurants in the area are expensie and were were not impressed with the food quality when we did eat out. The grocer in Custer is the best by far.We would visit again!
This cabin is centrally located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We are just a couple of miles from Pactola Lake which highlights beaches, fishing and boat rentals. Other attractions include horse back riding, chuck wagon suppers, the Needles Highway, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, The Cosmos, and Bear Country USA to name just a few. Don't miss the 1880 Train which departs from Hill City and takes a 2 hour trip to Keystone for a trip back in time. A visit to Wild Bill Hickock's grave in Deadwood, SD is a must which also features slot machines and Las Vegas style gambling at the card tables!
