About Richard Armstrong

Our Home is owned by 4 of us, Karen and I have been in the adventure and youth business for many years before she started in property management. This is our first attempt at combining our love of the outdoors and travel with vacation property management. We all love the Smoky Mountains and East Tennessee and are excited to share our knowledge with our guests. When you rent our home you can (if you desire) take advantage of our knowledge and passion for this area. Welcome to our home!

Richard Armstrong purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Richard Armstrong chose Townsend

We love Blount County and Townsend! Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg can be fun to visit for the day, but then we are always ready to head home to Townsend. With less traffic and tourists, you are actually 'in' the mountains, not just looking at them! There are so many interesting shops and vendors from the usual tourist shops to woodworkers and dulcimer makers! Cades Cove and the National Park are only 10 minutes from our door. Avoid the crowds and enjoy some of the best hiking in the park from the Townsend Entrance!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Ah, much needed rest and relaxation found here. Wish we could stay longer. The cabin and all of it's amenities made for a carefree, worryfree time to spend with family and catch our breath while taking in the beauty of the Smokies. Weather each day was perfect. Looking forward to returning again soon, but for a longer stay. Thanks for all that you did to make this such a pleasant expreience.

My Favorite Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
I have been to Townsend area many times but have never enjoyed my stay as much as when I rented this cabin! You were very helpful in planning our time in the area and your home had everything we could have wanted and more! The children enjoyed the movies and games and we used the hiking books to plan our time in the park. The soap and shampoo in the bathrooms were a nice treat! We loved having a bathroom in each bedroom! We will be back again!

We enjoyed our stay at this cabin. We normally stay in Gatlinburg but wanted to try to Townsend this time. It was nice being closer to Cades Cove which is our favorite. It was also nice being away from the crowds that are in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. This truly is the quiet side of the mountains. the cabin was very well stocked and very clean and comfortable. We felt very at home there. It was close to some pretty good restaurants and not too terribly far from town if you want to make the trip. We did go into town and for a day and then we went back one evening. We spent most of our time in the park however and it was very convenient for that. We did have a minor incident with our reservations / deposit but it was taken care of in the end and we did have an issue with the fireplace once we arrived but Karen had it handled within 24 hours! We enjoyed it so much that we are hoping to come back in the summer... Just waiting on our paperwork!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of our town and our cabin. Townsend is not for everyone, you have to enjoy being away from chain eateries and lots of light, noise and crowds. If you enjoy the park and the mountains, then Townsend is for you. We appreciate your patience with the fireplace. It is maintained annually, but equipment dose fail! I am so glad our fireplace guy could get it replaced so quickly. Rather than keep you waiting for a part, we decided to replace the whole fireplace to get it up and running right away! Looking forward to having you with us again in the spring.

AWESOME PLACE TO STAY

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 5 stayed at the Knotty Pine cabin for 10 days. It was absolutely wonderful. The location is perfect. Close to hiking, waterparks, amusement parks, restaurants, etc. We had a relaxing vacation and with the size of the cabin, we were able to have lots of family nights doing puzzles at the table, watching movies together, and just enjoying our vacation. No better place to stay for the amenities and the price in the Smokies. We hope to get back soon! Oh yes, make sure you go to Elvira's Cafe while in the area. Only about a 15 minute drive from the cabin and the food is FRESH FRESH FRESH and the owner is one that is very proud of what she and her staff serve!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words about our mountain home. We work hard to make sure our home has everything our guests may need. From a picnic basket for trips to Cade's Cove to brochures and lists of our favorite places to eat and visit. I am so glad your family had a great time and made some Smoky Mountain memories. We hope you can stay with us again soon at Knotty Pine

Awesome.

  • 5 of 5
We have stayed in multiple locations in Townsend. There always seems to be a tradeoff. If it is a great house without a view I wonder why we are in the mountains. If you are sitting on top of a mountain then it takes forever to run to the grocery store.

The Knotty Pine scored a 10 in all aspects: great house, great view, wonderful amenities and 5 minutes to town.

Now if only I didn't have to leave and go home.

Beautiful Cabin, Beautiful Mountains!!!

  • 5 of 5
The property was great! The access to the pool at Laurel Valley was also a great bonus! Well appointed and maintained cabin. If you are looking to get away from it all, this is the area!

The one hiccup with the house (Septic issues) was taken care of professionally and promptly.

Thanks for a great family vacation. Our grown children and our fur children truly enjoyed our week "away from it all!"

A Memorable Stay- You Will Not Be Disappointed

  • 5 of 5
They say that an experience is influenced by the events/elements that surround you. The wonderful stay at the Knotty Pine mountain home was a large part of that experience. The pictures (exterior and interior) you see on the VRBO website are not photos from years past- they are true to life! There is a definite great pride of ownership here. Always a concern is the value... will we get ours money worth? I can say with no doubt this house is well worth it. Based on the condition of the house/property, the location ("quiet side" of the Smokies), mountain scenery and local attractions you will come away from here feeling you got your money's worth. Very, very clean, updated/modern and spacious house. Our stay comprised of three couples, so the separate three bedrooms and private full bathrooms made it nice that each couple had their own sanctum of privacy. Part of Disneyworld's success is based on the little "details" provided in order to enhance a more enjoyable experience. The amenities (housewares, cable, WIFI service, etc.) indicated on this listing are all there. That was my impression about this house: hard to explain, but...the small details (the mountain/cabin decorum) put into this house that made it feel homey/comfortable. You will know what I mean when you stay here. Not to sound cliche, but it is true: "you will definitely not be disappointed". How neat it was to walk out on the wrap around porch with a cup of coffee and watch the sun as it burned off the morning fog or with my favorite libation to watch the sunset cast ont he mountains. By the way, the outdoor furniture is all-weather Amish-made, so be assured you are not going to be sitting on creaky or falling apart outdoor furniture! The hottub was great and used often! The mountain views (can't say enough about them), the trails (hiked the Gregory Ridge Trail -what an awesome trail and view at the top at the Bald!), and Cades Cove were amazing (saw a mother bear and cub- very cool!). You can be sure that we will stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words! The group of friends that own this home have all fallen in love over the years with Townsend and this beautiful valley. We have tried to bring all that is unique to this place into our home. We had rented other places before we bought Knotty Pine, and were always disappointed with the lack of any personality, they were all so sterile. We wanted our home to feel both comfortable and homey. We are so glad you enjoyed. The Amish furniture comes from where I currently work and is a piece of Indiana in my Townsend sanctuary! I hope you can stay with us again when you are in our Mountain Valley! Richard and the Knotty Pine Team
