Welcome to Recuperacion. Our home is a large 4 bedroom, 3 full bath beachfront property for rent in the small fishing village of Chelem, Yucatan (about 5200 people) on the Gulf of Mexico.
This is not a resort area - this is the real Mexico! Chelem is a rustic and laid back town, but close to modern amenities and large cities.
The home has been completely updated and features a pool with built in loungers, a modern kitchen with new appliances including 5 burner gas range, washer and dryer, TV and wifi internet access, air conditioning in bedrooms, pressurized water system, and talavera tile accents throughout.
Gulf and pool views from most every room in the home. There is about 3000 feet of living area under roof, so you'll have plenty of space.
Downstairs you'll find the kitchen, living room, dining room, a bedroom with 2 double beds, and a full bathroom.
Upstairs 3 more bedrooms, and 2 more baths -- Here you'll find the master bedroom with balcony overlooking the gulf and a private en-suite full bathroom.
There is also a bedroom with a gorgeous hand-carved king bed, and another bedroom with a queen bed that has lovely water views; these two bedrooms share a full bath.
The laundry area is also upstairs.
A large covered patio overlooks the pool and the gulf and has dining area, hammock, and lounge chairs. The beach is quiet and good for swimming, or taking long walks and searching for seashells.
Protectores added in March, 2012, so that home can be fully secured when vacant, or for added peace of mind for guests.
Our home is located within walking distance of the main square of Chelem with it's many good restaurants, open market, church, a few shops, public transportation, and an internet cafe'.
We are about 6 miles west of the cruise port town of Progreso, (approx. 50,000 people) which has several beachfront restaurants, tourist shops, a wide malecon (boardwalk), a nice square, and a bustling market.
We are only 30 minutes north of the large, colonial city of Merida (over 1 million people), which has an international airport featuring direct flights from Houston. The best connections are on United Airlines, offering 1 stop service from most US cities directly into Merida. Or you can save some money and fly into the resort area of Cancun, which is about a 3.5 hour drive from the house; it is also served by a luxury bus that travels from Cancun to Merida.
This area is becoming popular with Canadians and Americans as of late, so there is a large expat community around.
There is much to do nearby including visiting Mayan ruins (Dzibilchaltun, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and several others), or touring henequen/sisal plantations with their restored haciendas, kayaking in flamingo habitats, swimming in cenotes (underground rivers), fishing, lots of shopping, or just beaching it. The area is culturally interesting and will provide you with insight into true Mexican life.
Within driving distance of the home are several very interesting towns with unique personalities - Izamal, Ticul, Valladolid, Celestun, and many more.
Historic Merida is a city dating back to the 1600's with amazing original architecture in the Centro district. Experience music and dancing on it's many squares nightly, or on Sunday morning rent a bike and tour the city on several streets closed just for bicycling. You will love the fabulous restaurants and outdoor cafes in Merida, and the shopping is great!
Or visit modern Merida with it's ice skating rink in the center of a mall, interesting zoo, or it's VIP movie theaters with lounge chairs and cocktail service. Even Home Depots and Starbucks, if you're homesick.
You could stay in this area for a long time and not run out of things to do. The local people are very friendly and helpful, and will gladly assist you even if you don't know Spanish.
We have an English speaking caretaker nearby if you need assistance, she will also meet you and introduce you to the home. We have many friends living nearby, so you'll have a handy network.
You can make use of the frequent and cheap bus service, or rent a car for maximum flexibility. Our home rents for $700/week, or $2000/month, and we love snowbirds! This is our personal vacation home, and we take great care and pride in it, you will enjoy it.
Please email me with any questions you may have, or for additional photos. Also, if you are considering buying property in this area of Mexico, I'd be happy to talk to you about our experience.
We are Terry and Mike, a couple living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We enjoy traveling throughout the world, as well as visiting our second hometown of Chelem, Yucatan, Mexico. If you are considering buying property in this area of Mexico, I'd be happy to talk to you about our experience.
Terry Kelly is also the author of '3 Nearly Perfect Days in Mexico City' published by Amazon for Kindle, and also available in print edition.
Terry purchased this house in 2008
We love the local area, it is culturally interesting and the people are a delight. The weather is warm year round.
Insight into the real Mexico, a cultural experience, a chance to enjoy beachfront relaxation. I can send you a link with more photos of the home and area.
We came back home this week (we spent some days also in Miami) from our trip and we really enjoyed it!
We appreciated a lot being in Chelem: we found it much more genuine than the most touristic area of Tulum and it was an excellent base to discover Yucatàn. We have seen lots of places (Uxmal, Merida, Dzibilchaltun, Progreso, Chelestun, Laguna Rosada, Izamal, Acanceh and los tres Cenotes, Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Tulum and Hel-Ha, Cobà) and really appreciated the mix of "beach and culture".
The house was perfect for us, spacious and cozy, and looking at men going out fishing at dawn was really a nice experience. The all of us (the kids in particular!!) enjoyed lunch at TacoMaya...., Joan was very kind and helpful, your house is in good hands!

Stayed in this house fro 2 months and loved every minute. Great location! Terrific sandy beach for swimming. Pool on the beachside is a plus. Very open and spacious feel to the house. Always felt safe. Bugs were minimal, and we had the doors open to hear and see the surf all the time. Joan, the property manager, was extremely responsive and helpful. Would rent again and for longer next time!
Our family of six had a very quiet and relaxing Christmas and New Years at the house. Everything was as the pictures show. The property manager was very helpful and attended promptly to any issue that occurred.
We went to Chichen Itza to see the Mayan Ruins, went to Merida on Sunday to see the dancers and the market. We took a few more day trips to the surrounding area, but spent most of our time on the beach and at the pool.
I already have recommended this property to a friend.
I can still here the ocean waves and miss them very much.
I would definitely stay here again.
Thanks for everything, it was our first trip to Mexico and it was very good.
My husband, I and three children (1, 12 and 13) stayed here in the summer to check out the area. we were so comfortable, it was like being at our own home. Every day we swam in the gulf and pool, enjoyed walks into town, tried many of the local restaurants and enjoyed exploring the surrounding towns. We never even turned on the television once. Internet was perfect, we never had any concerns about safety, always found just what we needed within minutes of the property and had no difficulty despite not knowing any Spanish (we enjoyed a few mystery dinners though). The house was comfortable without the use of air conditioning as it is so well designed for air flow. My only wish was that we had more time. I highly recommend this property and would return in a heart beat. Owners were so wonderful and helpful answering my too many questions about the area, operating costs etc...Property manager was prompt, courteous and also very helpful.
Book well in advance, we wanted to return this December but they were full! Thanks so much for sharing your home and taking the time to answer my questions.
Great time in small town Chelem. Seriously, people getting around on horseback! The house itself looks exactly as it does in the pictures. There were 6 of us(2 couples and 2 singles), and everybody had plenty of room and comfort in their own rooms. Enough glasses, dishes, pots and pans etc. for any need you would have. Kitchen appliances were all in good working order. House was clean and maybe it was the time of the year, but we didn't see many of the bugs we were warned about. However, bring some bug spray cause at dusk the mosquitos come out with a vengeance! Water in the 2 big jugs provided lasted for the week. The owners were good communicators, and the caretaker Joan was easily summoned if needed. Only had two problems while there… AC in the master conked out for the last day we were there(luckily the temp had dropped that night!) and we did go a day w/o showers due to a faulty water pump. However, even after some confusion with keys, the water was fixed and running by the time we got back from day long activities. Good hot water in the showers, best water pressure in the downstairs one (of course). Very secure property if you follow all the instructions to make it that way. Tacomaya right near the house was really good. The other expat places were good for a drink at night, but we opted for the more authentic places in town for eating. Take the combis to Progreso for only 8 pesos one way. They drop you off at a grocery store there, and there are way more places to eat in Progreso. We would recommend EL Toro for fried fish. If you stay out late in Progreso or get there after a late night in Merida, a taxi only cost us 100 pesos no matter how many people were in the car. Pool was awesome and well maintained. Maybe they could spring for some more chaise lounges or a few pool noodles(hint, hint). We wanted to stay in an owner occupied home , and were not disappointed! Security was returned within a day or so. We would recommend this home very highly!
This is not Cancun nor is this a 5* resort. This is a slice of Mexico that has yet to be spoiled by tourists. That is not to say that you are isolated or left lacking. The property is a roomy 4 bedroom, 3 bath, beachfront property. The owners are first class and ensure that all of your concerns and needs are met. We spent 4 weeks (not long enough). Chelem, where the house is located is a small town of 5000+/- with quite a few places to eat and some small mini-markets. The town has a very friendly group of ex-pats that gather at a few of the ex-pat owned eateries. Larger grocery stores are available in Progreso, about 15 minutes away and Merida about 30 minutes away. Merida is a metropolitan city rich in modern amenities like shopping malls, big box stores, chain restaurants, fine dining....as well as Mayan and Spanish Colonial history.
Waking each morning to the local fishermen heading out for the day, the gentle waves and beautiful weather was glorious. Each day, you have the opportunity to buy fish right off the small boats that come ashore steps from the house. We used the pool every day.
With the media highlighting every negative story about Mexico, we went to Mexico with our 6 year old daughter with some concerns. We left feeling as safe, if not safer in Chelem, as we do in Hot Springs, AR. We walked, to and from the town square late at night without any concerns.
A previous reviewer posted some negative comments about the security of the home. Nothing could be further than the truth. It would take a battering ram and cutting torch to gain access to that home once it is properly secured from the inside. The house contains a safe that is large enough to store ipads, wallets, phones, passports....even a small laptop.
In my opinion, the property listing and photographs are current and accurate. The owners maintain the property and are quick to meet any issues that arise. Terry and Mike were very responsive to our pre-rental questions and continued to be responsive throughout our stay. I would recommend this property. Within a short distance, you can meet the interests of every traveler. We ate local food, walked on the beach, climbed Mayan pyramids. We didn't make it to many other sites, but will next time. Fishing, boating, kayaking...are all available within minutes.
Our trip had the intended purpose of scouting this part of Mexico as a possible retirement location. It passed with flying colors.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this clean, comfortable and spacious beachfront home. It allowed us to combine relaxation, family time and tourist excursions. The owners provided a detail list of their personal recommendations for activities, attractions and restaurants. The only downside was we didn't have enough time to experience them all. Must mean we have another trip in our future.
