Flavor of the area: Approaching our cottage you will drive the quaint typical New England town of West Stockbridge and through the Berkshire Mountains. You will pass by rolling farms with cows frolicking in the fields, farm stands which sell vegetable and flowers where you pay by the honor system of putting money in a jar, homes with tables in front selling honey, rasberries, or garlic, and about a half mile before our cottage Bartlett's Apple Orchard where you can pick or buy apples, flowers, or rasberries (seasonal), drink fresh mulled apple cider, buy local products, or eat homemade cider donuts hot fresh from the oven. Within a 10 minute drive you can be in the historic town of Lenox, do to Tanglewood, Kripalu Yoga Center, or the Stockbridge Bowl. In Lenox there are gourmet restaurants, art galleries, and high end boutiques that rival those in any big city. For a more local experience, West Stockbridge, also 10 minutes away, is quaint town complete with a general store, a cafe, and a local tavern.
Something for everybody: The area has something for everybody. There is kayaking, biking, rafting, and hiking nearby for outdoor enthusiasts. There are restaurants abound. There are spas and golf resorts easily accessible through out the area. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has it's summer home at Tanglewood in nearby historic Lenox. There are three small ski resorts. There are high end art galleries as well as personal studios you can visit in artists homes. In Great Barrington you can walk around town, browse in used books stores, see live music, see an independent film, shop at a food co-op, and eat ethnic food. You can experience the revival of an old industrial town in historic downtown Pittsfield. Children will enjoy a visit to Hancock Shaker Village to see how the Shaker's lived, to Bosquet to ski or tube in the winter and ride the alpine slide, jump on the trampoline, or play mini golf in the summer, and to special children's programs at Tanglewood, Kripalu, the Clark Museum, or the Berkshire Museum.
Cottage: Our cottage is at Richmond Pond. Richmond Pond is more like a small lake where people kayak, canoe, boat, water ski, and swim. We have private lake access where we share a dock and common area with a few other families. The beach is about a minute walk from the cottage down a lovely wooded path. We have a canoe that is available to renters. Often we also have a kayak available, but sometimes we take it home. In the winter our snow shoes are available for renters. In the winter in front of the large fireplace is the place is where we spend the most time and in the summer we spend the most time on the large comfy porch listening to the stream gurgling by. The cottage is small but surprisingly roomy. The kitchen is small but very functional and has all full size appliances. There are two table for eating, one next to the kitchen and the other on the porch. The cottage is decorated nicely but very minimally and is very relaxing in it's simplicity.
