Overview

Ojai House Rental Photos and Description

5 B, 3 BA, sleeps 9, four couples and one single

A spacious Craftsman farm house, the Churchill Residence is located in the east end of the Ojai Valley, a half block from The Thacher School and the Krishnamurti Foundation. Originally part of the historic Pierpont property, the 4000 sq. ft. house was designed and built in 1905 for Civil War veteran General Charles G. Penney. The second owner of the house was Dr. Guido Ferrando who along with Aldous Huxley, and J. Krishnamurti founded the Besant Hill School (formerly Happy Valley School). The residence has been owned by the Churchill family since 1955.

A short drive from Ojai Town Center, the residence is set back one-tenth of a mile from Thacher Road. Amid orange and avocado orchards, the location is private and serene. Beautifully landscaped grounds compliment mountain and valley views from verandas on the front and back of the house. The residence is not suited for groups with children for reasons of their safety and potential damage.

A peaceful, rural retreat: The Churchill Residence is popular with friend's groups, writer's groups, and Thacher families. It's secluded and peaceful, a great place to have a family reunion, catch up with friends, read, think, create. There are many cultural events in Ojai throughout the year. Don't miss the Sunday Farmer's market and Bart's Books.

Restrictions: We do not allow parties, receptions, etc. with more guests than are staying in the house.

The residence is not suited for groups with children for reasons of their safety and potential damage. The house is over 100 years old and has not been child proofed. An infant under crawling age may be accepted by special arrangement. You will be required to bring bed and bedding for the infant. We require a liability release at the time of the reservation.

The house is not available for any commercial use including filming and photography.

Our calendar is up to date. Please check availability before making your inquiry. With respect, we no longer respond to inquiries for dates that are booked in the calendar.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our 3 days here were not enough. My son was married at Twin Peaks Ranch on the 15th so we were very busy with wedding activities and could take full advantage of the beautiful grounds and orchards. We all loved this wonderful gracious house and spending time on the verandas just enjoying the spectacular scenery around us (and the flowers). It was so relaxing and calming."

Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place is heavenly. We spent a long, relaxing weekend here with our adult children and their significant others. It was just as I hoped. Lots of cozy places to be alone as well as big enough rooms to be together. The kitchen is wonderfully stocked with pots and pens, serving dishes and sharp knives. The front porch is a perfect place to watch the sunset and experience Ojai's "pink moment". The pool was immaculate and the hot tub worked well. We even enjoyed the outdoor shower. We were allowed to pick the oranges on the property and made mimosas with fresh squeezed orange juice! It is only a few miles away from the Ohio Valley Inn and Spa and we spent a relaxing day there as well. We will definitely be back.

Sisters Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This unique home just minutes away from downtown Ojai was the perfect destination for my 4 sisters in law and myself to connect for our first ever sister's retreat. We all come from different families with different interests so finding this peaceful place to renew, rest and rejuvenate was more than we imagined it would be. Coming to a home like this with family is truly special. It affords a more personal experience for the group. We ate and cooked in the extremely well appointed kitchen. We spent lazy hours on the porches talking and drinking whatever beverage of choice. The sunsets were spectacular. We quilted together in the cozy living room and we hiked the beautiful nature trails around us. The Churchill home gave us the opportunity to casually reconnect as family and more importantly friends. If we had chosen to stay at a hotel or B & B, it would have been a much different trip. This place is magical and I look forward to the next time I can wave my magic wand to be sitting in the hammock on the porch with a lovely glass of pinot in hand reading a good book. Heaven.

Friends Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Nine of us converged in California for a friend's wedding weekend and we were so lucky to have found this home to stay in! So spacious and well taken care of; you can tell the owners love their home and we do, too! We had everything we needed for our stay; we cooked in, ate out, swam in the pool and played more rounds of croquet than I every imagined (we had quite the talent for the game in our group!). The property itself was gorgeous. We spent the evenings on the spacious front porch--more than enough comfy seating. Several of us went for a run down the road, others took a hike up a nearby trail; happy faces from all as we returned "home". Overall, it was just relaxing and enjoyable to be in this home. The owner has a wonderful property manager nearby who was so welcoming and kind when we arrived. We all agreed that we would stay here again when we returned to the area.

Another Beautiful Stay...

  • 5 of 5

This is a very special house and I was lucky enough to get to enjoy a second weekend there recently. The pool and hot tub were lovely. Both quite clean and well maintained. The house itself has everything you need and more. There's a magical atmosphere with spacious porches to sit on and admire the mountains, hammocks to lay about in and fireplace to cozy up to in the evening. The setting of the house is particularly nice. It feels completely private and there's nothing between you and the mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the noise and bustle of the city and enjoy the orange blossom scented air. The furnishings are tasteful antiques that give the house a period feel. All in all, I wish I could go every weekend and recommend it highly.

Idyllic Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Came here for a calm and peaceful bachelorette weekend and was blown away by the home. The property is stunning, the home is wonderful, and the pool is fantastic. We were amazed by the amenities included, the kitchen, movies, towels, BBQ, etc. It was the perfect relaxing weekend retreat. Would DEFINITELY recommend!! Can't wait to return one day.

"Un petit bout de Paradis" ( A little piece of paradise)

  • 5 of 5

We've been many times in Ojai, in this magical house, and knowing that we are going back brings peace and joy in my heart The place is marvellous, welcoming charming. On one hand, you feel comfortable, at home, like you've been there earlier in your life...and at the same time the home is full of memories, objects, movies, secret garden's places from other times and people...that your imagination can only go on a wild romantic ride... a treasure. Thanks to the owners who take such a loving care of it and let us share it with them.
