House is south of rt 28. Access to 40 miles of Cape Cod Rail Trail bike path is across the way.
The House: If you want privacy, romance, fun for kids, a relaxed and natural atmosphere, you enjoy camping and being outdoors and nature and the woods, this is the perfect house. If you want a hotel experience, air conditioning, manicured grounds, this is not the house for you. This is a cape cod cottage (built in 1952) and an unfinished, rustic barn. It is a casual and relaxed place. We cater to families with kids.
There is easy access to the bike path, so you don't need to drive there with bikes. You can bike or walk to the beach in under fifteen minutes. There is a great tree swing for kids, a little tree house perch for kids and adults (we sit there and drink tea), a truly romantic claw-foot bathtub in the barn bedroom complete with scented candles and a terrycloth bathrobe, the seating area on the deck with strings of lights in the trees makes the outdoors magical, the loft is well-loved by kids of all ages and provides a wonderful place to hang out, play games, put on plays for the adults downstairs in the living room, write on the chalk-board ceiling, have privacy, make mischief. The kitchen is well stocked, there are plenty of games including croquet and badminton.
The Barn : The barn has a large (18 x 24) second floor bedroom which can sleep parents and kid (there is a queen size bed as well as a single.) The barn consists of a bathroom (curtained off, there are no walls), clawfoot tub, outdoor shower, hot tub, small kitchen with no stove, but coffeemaker, microwave, toaster oven, fridge, Weber gas grill on the back deck. The barn is rustic. Some people love barns. If you don't this is not the right property for you. Please email for more photos.
Everyone tells us that they could spend their entire vacation without ever leaving the truly private property.
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge: Also in Chatham (from Fodors)
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a quiet, peaceful place of sand and beach grass, tidal flats, dunes, marshes, freshwater ponds, thickets of bayberry and beach plum. Several groups conduct tours of the islands, including the Massachusetts Audubon Society, many with a focus on bird-watching. In season, the Rip Ryder will take you over from Chatham for bird- or seal-watching tours; private charters are also available. Another excellent option is Monomoy Island Excursions, which offers seal and seabird tours and boat trips out around Monomoy Island, leaving from Saquatucket Harbor on a 43-foot high-speed catamaran. Outermost Adventures also provides water taxi services out to Monomoy Island and offers fishing, birding, and seal-watching cruises.

About Susan Shepherd
Barry Payne is from Kenya and spent his childhood camping, going on adventures and living in nature. We both love the outdoors and think of our house and barn as an extension of that. I'm a public radio producer, and have lived in Massachusetts my entire adult life. We both kitesurf, paddleboard, kayak and surf.
Why Susan Shepherd chose Chatham
You can walk to the beach, restaurants, the bike path, while having a vacation in total privacy surrounded by nature without seeing anyone else if that's what you want. The bike path means you never have to get in your car if you don't want to. We love riding to nearby White pond for an afternoon swim. It's pretty secluded and often there's no one else swimming there. It's the perfect way to end the day before a wonderful cookout on the deck, and a campfire on a cool evening, or a family ping pong tournament in the barn.
What makes this house unique
The house is on an acre and a half, which is very rare for the Cape and Chatham, so it is completely private, nestled among beautiful old trees. The porch is on the second story on the back of the house so you are sitting in the tree tops. The house is on a dirt cul-de-sac with only a few other houses, which you can't see from this property. We love having a separate space in the barn, and when we have guests my husband and I always choose the barn bedroom, which is cozy and quiet and a great getaway from whatever is happening in the house. As soon as we drove onto the property we knew this was the house for us.
Guestbook comments from the owner
We had a wonderful week in Chatham and at the house. The house is so bright, airy and comfortable and little things like scented hand soap, fluffy comforters and a well-stocked kitchen were so nice. We went on a seal watch, flew a kite at Lighthouse Beach, had fun at Ridgevale Beach, took long walks and enjoyed warm cinnamon rolls from Marion's and so much more. Thank you for setting the stage for a great family week.
