Overview

Chatham House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms + 4 bed loft, 2 bathrooms, 2 outdoor showers, sleeps 11

Pretty, shabby chic, sunny cottage and barn on private two acres of land down quiet country road. Brand new six person hot tub on deck, in time for fall or winter rental. The grounds are naturally landscaped, not manicured. We don't use chemicals on the lawn. That means it has clover, moss, and other groundcover with the grass. Enjoy the serenity of the undisturbed woods, open floor plan with peaceful views of the backyard and abutting Chatham conservation 3-acre woodland. Wrap-around deck for eating outdoors watching hawks, and myriad other wildlife. Just .75 of a mile to Ridgevale beach. Pretty rose garden. Open kitchen, washer/dryer. Renovations include second story sleeping loft, perfect for kids, cathedral ceilings in living room, lots of sunny windows, refinished wood floors. House equipped with high speed internet. Post and beam barn sleeps three. Great house for two families vacationing together. Barn has one bedroom (sleeps 3), half bathroom, living/dining room, small kitchen, outdoor shower, hot tub. Please read the entire description (in 'more details' below) before booking.

House is south of rt 28. Access to 40 miles of Cape Cod Rail Trail bike path is across the way.

The House: If you want privacy, romance, fun for kids, a relaxed and natural atmosphere, you enjoy camping and being outdoors and nature and the woods, this is the perfect house. If you want a hotel experience, air conditioning, manicured grounds, this is not the house for you. This is a cape cod cottage (built in 1952) and an unfinished, rustic barn. It is a casual and relaxed place. We cater to families with kids.

There is easy access to the bike path, so you don't need to drive there with bikes. You can bike or walk to the beach in under fifteen minutes. There is a great tree swing for kids, a little tree house perch for kids and adults (we sit there and drink tea), a truly romantic claw-foot bathtub in the barn bedroom complete with scented candles and a terrycloth bathrobe, the seating area on the deck with strings of lights in the trees makes the outdoors magical, the loft is well-loved by kids of all ages and provides a wonderful place to hang out, play games, put on plays for the adults downstairs in the living room, write on the chalk-board ceiling, have privacy, make mischief. The kitchen is well stocked, there are plenty of games including croquet and badminton.

The Barn : The barn has a large (18 x 24) second floor bedroom which can sleep parents and kid (there is a queen size bed as well as a single.) The barn consists of a bathroom (curtained off, there are no walls), clawfoot tub, outdoor shower, hot tub, small kitchen with no stove, but coffeemaker, microwave, toaster oven, fridge, Weber gas grill on the back deck. The barn is rustic. Some people love barns. If you don't this is not the right property for you. Please email for more photos.

Everyone tells us that they could spend their entire vacation without ever leaving the truly private property.

Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge: Also in Chatham (from Fodors)

Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a quiet, peaceful place of sand and beach grass, tidal flats, dunes, marshes, freshwater ponds, thickets of bayberry and beach plum. Several groups conduct tours of the islands, including the Massachusetts Audubon Society, many with a focus on bird-watching. In season, the Rip Ryder will take you over from Chatham for bird- or seal-watching tours; private charters are also available. Another excellent option is Monomoy Island Excursions, which offers seal and seabird tours and boat trips out around Monomoy Island, leaving from Saquatucket Harbor on a 43-foot high-speed catamaran. Outermost Adventures also provides water taxi services out to Monomoy Island and offers fishing, birding, and seal-watching cruises.

About Susan Shepherd

Barry Payne is from Kenya and spent his childhood camping, going on adventures and living in nature. We both love the outdoors and think of our house and barn as an extension of that. I'm a public radio producer, and have lived in Massachusetts my entire adult life. We both kitesurf, paddleboard, kayak and surf.

Why Susan Shepherd chose Chatham

You can walk to the beach, restaurants, the bike path, while having a vacation in total privacy surrounded by nature without seeing anyone else if that's what you want. The bike path means you never have to get in your car if you don't want to. We love riding to nearby White pond for an afternoon swim. It's pretty secluded and often there's no one else swimming there. It's the perfect way to end the day before a wonderful cookout on the deck, and a campfire on a cool evening, or a family ping pong tournament in the barn.

What makes this house unique

The house is on an acre and a half, which is very rare for the Cape and Chatham, so it is completely private, nestled among beautiful old trees. The porch is on the second story on the back of the house so you are sitting in the tree tops. The house is on a dirt cul-de-sac with only a few other houses, which you can't see from this property. We love having a separate space in the barn, and when we have guests my husband and I always choose the barn bedroom, which is cozy and quiet and a great getaway from whatever is happening in the house. As soon as we drove onto the property we knew this was the house for us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful week in Chatham and at the house. The house is so bright, airy and comfortable and little things like scented hand soap, fluffy comforters and a well-stocked kitchen were so nice. We went on a seal watch, flew a kite at Lighthouse Beach, had fun at Ridgevale Beach, took long walks and enjoyed warm cinnamon rolls from Marion's and so much more. Thank you for setting the stage for a great family week.

Beautiful, Fun and Sooooo Comfy

  • 5 of 5
We played cards at the dining table, ate on the deck and made s'mores from the lawn furniture. We lounged on the overstuffed couches, played ping pong in the barn and frisbee on the lawn. After several days we convinced ourselves that we should actually go to the beach. Honestly, this would have been better as a two week rental. Chatham has tons to do and the house is such a great gathering spot. We just needed more time.

This place was sooo lovely with so many pretty, artistic touches both inside and out, yet it was also casual and comfortable. There were 10 of us(adults and teens) It felt spacious with the open floor plan, loft, fabulous outside and an amazing barn next to the cottage for sleeping upstairs and hanging out below. You could be all together or find your own space. It's in a private setting, but a walk from the beach and close to town. Chatham is a wonderful place on the Cape, with beautiful beaches, great shops and eating and lots to do and explore. We would definitely come back. Sue, the owner, was great!!!

Great stay at this house !

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed a week last Thanksgiving in this house, we had the best stay ever. The owners were very nice, responsive, available and helpful to help us to plan our visit and make our stay a big hit.
We just loved the place, big enough with the barn to fit two families (4 adults and 5 kids from 6 to 15 years old), very cozy and comfortable, but most of all with a lot of charm... We felt at home sitting around the fireplace, reading, chatting, playing board games, cooking (the kitchen is very well equipped) and enjoying an exceptional Thanksgiving dinner with lobster rather than turkey. The kids played a lot outside climbing trees and building tree houses... inside, the loft was the perfect place for them to sleep and play together.
We did a lot of hiking all around the upper Cape, the location in Chatham was perfect to reach the different hiking and touristic sites within half an hour. The weather was gorgeous and we were lucky enough to sight seals and sea birds...

We will definitely come back ... Thanks a lot Suzane and to your family

Great location for our large family!

  • 5 of 5
My large family had a fabulous stay here. We loved the house and property! The owner was friendly, honest and very helpful. The house was well supplied and very comfortable for us. We absolutely LOVED the outdoor showers.
We hosted a party for our mother's 70th birthday and the place was perfect for it. We also really enjoyed biking down to Ridgevale Beach. High tide at Ridgevale is fantastic, where you can ride waves into the tidal creek and be carried with the current. It was super fun. My nieces and nephew loved all the animals they found in the tidal creek. We would have been happy just biking and walking down to the beach everyday.

Elbow room and charm

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 6, including 3 children, had plenty of room to relax both inside and outside. We were able to walk to the beach, run and ride our bikes from the house, and walk for ice cream. This was also a good central location for exploring the rest of Cape Cod. The pictures are very representative of this charming house.

Great House & Location!

Great House & Location!

Our family spent a week at this house in early August. The house is very private, open, bright and lovely. The yard is great for kids and there is a terrific loft for the kids to play in. The house is very close to the great kid-friendly beach and close to town. I would highly recommend this house for a relaxing summer vacation.

Chatham has received the 'Distinctive Destinations Award Recipient' from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Its waters and history are diverse and unique. The Cockle Cove community of South Chatham is the best kept secret; rural and surrounded by vital marshlands including a salt water pond and channel to Nantucket Sound large enough for a 21' outboard center console sport fishing boat. An awe inspiring 15 minute kayak ride brings you to the mouth of Eel Creek also known as 'The Jetty', a remote stretch of barrier beach there brings you even closer to nature and further from the crowds. Swimming is warmed by the Gulf Stream. It hosts a large variety of birds, fish and other animals striped bass, bluefish, snowy Egrets, Blue Heron, King Fisher, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Red-tail Hawk and many migratory seabirds. From Chatham you can paddle board, windsurf, kayak, boat out to Monomoy, ride 40 miles on the bike path, skydive, fly over the cape on a scenic plane ride, drive to Provincetown for a Whale Watch, take a day trip to Nantucket on the nearby ferry, go clamming in one of the many estuaries, swim in a pond, drive to the National Seashore to learn how to surf. A week in Chatham is never enough.
