Some of the most amazing views you'll ever experience from this hilltop contemporary perched above Burnt Coat Harbor on Swan's Island. This custom 4 story home has 3 levels of decks on the water side to enjoy views of the Gulf of Maine Islands and beyond to the open horizon of the Atlantic. Words cannot describe the beauty of this area and the unique setting of this house. There is a right of way to the shore for swimming and boating. There is a mooring in the harbor available for your use. Come experience this island getaway and hike the numerous island trails, explore Fine Sand Beach, just sit and eat lobster at one of the local sites or buy and cook it yourself and enjoy from the expansive wrap around decks. The ferry ride is only 35 minutes from Bass Harbor. Southwest Harbor is just a few miles away from the Ferry terminal with grocery stores and restaurants and Acadia National Park's headquarters and entrance would be about 1/2 hour drive from the mainland side of the terminal for great day trips.
Owners are a married couple (40 years) with 4 children, 2 son-in-laws, 5 grandchildren and 1 dog.
This is our summer home and maybe our full time home in the future.
Clark Howland purchased this estate in 2012
Our summer home has so much to offer it's difficult to list all the attractions. BUT if you enjoy quiet, private and peaceful vacations Swans Island is a special place.
Nature is at the back door.
The ocean off the front decks.
Lobsters for the asking.
Amazing views of the harbor and ocean.
And at night an astronomical delight
This is the 3rd time we have stayed here and our 4th will be in October again. Each time we visit, we discover new things about Swans Island and love this house even more. My brother and I have lived all over the US and in SE Asia (Bangkok, Thailand and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and we have traveled extensively. Without question, this house and our stay on Swans Island is by far the best vacation we have ever had. Thats why we continue to return.
The house is spectacular in terms of the view and accommodations. My brother is a grommet cook and every utensil and appliance are available along with a marvelous gas range and stove. The house is the most comfortable I have ever stayed in. The fireplace is perfect at night and we have experienced both warm days and snowy evenings in October.
Our last visit, we hitched a ride with a local lobster fisherman and took an all day hike around Marshall Island. Beautiful and peaceful scenery. Loved it so much, we hitched a ride again but this time to Frenchboro which was even more beautiful.
We normally buy lobsters off the boat at the Co-Op or from Normy and Nancy Burns. We have also collected snails and mussles at Fine Sand Beach and seen the bald eagle who lives near by. We have also fed nuthatches and chickadees from our hands on the main house deck.
I cannot say enough good things about this house as well as the wonderful owners Clark and Barb. They have always made our visit and stay perfect. Looking forward to many returns.

Our family just completed a stay at this home. We were a bit nervous about the ferry ride to get here but found it to work out fine. It was well worth the trip. The views are second to none on the island and there is plenty of room to spread out with a large group. We went on this trip to see Acadia but found we preferred the quiet seclusion of the island to the crowds. Plenty to do and see here. Recommendations would be to have a car to keep on the island if you plan on going back and forth on the ferry and definitely go for a ride with Normie Burns on his lobster boat. It is just a magical place!
This is a beautiful rental home in a quiet, relaxing location!
Swan's Island is the place to go if you want to "get away from it all". This charming island has everything to offer - explorers will enjoy the lighthouse, walking/biking paths, and beautiful black rock beaches, and beach bums will love the fine sand beach. The local residents are very welcoming and you can find great deals on lobsters and clams from any one of the local fisherman!
The home has the most breathtaking view of the island, harbor, and beyond. It was large enough for us to sleep 8 adults and 2 children comfortably! The kitchen is brand-new which makes cooking fun! There is a large lobster pot and propane burner and an outdoor grill as well. We had great times sitting around the fireplace as a family (all the firewood you'll ever need is available in a shed next to the house). The home was clean and well prepared for our arrival.
Children will be endlessly entertained and adults will find this a quiet, relaxing vacation. Highly recommended for families of all ages!
Home was clean, well supplied and ocean views were spectacular.
Home was everything we wanted and more a real OMG moment.
Swans Island has much to offer, our whole family enjoyed the stay and 'get-a-way'.
We will definitely consider repeating soon.
What a beautiful home! Completely custom built as described but what we realized after a day is that this house sits at the highest peak on the island. The ocean breeze was soothing and the songs from the birds mesmerizing as the 3rd floor deck is literally in the tree tops. People who work in Bass Harbor believe there is nothing to do on this island, we found that not to be true. This environment is not for everyone in that there are no roller coasters or shopping districts. With four adults and six kids, we found that the kids adored running and jumping on the rocks in front of the home, building campfires and listening to audio (CD) books on the amazing sound system that is wired throughout every level of this home. The adults were able to relax and rejuvenate on the 2nd floor deck and still keep kids under watchful eyes. The local residents were very welcoming! We purchased lobster from the fishermen's coop, where we received a fantastic lesson on the molting process of lobsters. A large lobster cooking pot and propane cooker are available in the house and we quickly cooked 11 large lobsters. When we could not locate Fine Sand Beach, a breathtaking undisturbed beach down an enchanted wooded pathway, a local resident that we asked directions from, drove us their. The little Carrying Place Market was a daily highlight as an ice cream run in the evenings. The lighthouse and wild flowers are not to be missed. This location works well as an artist retreat or family reunion. With 10 people total, we never felt on top of each other. Riding bicycles in this terrain is for those of ironman constitution. It is not the speeding traffic, but the amount of hills. Local residents told us that biking clubs from Vermont ride the island because of the challenging terrain. You do need sweatshirts, jackets and long pants in the evening hours as the max temp during the day was 60-70 F. This home does have radiant floor heat, which is a treat if you never have experienced it before. Fully stocked wood shed for wood burning stoves and fire place also available if you prefer that form of warmth. Home was clean and beautifully prepared for our arrival. Owner lives on island an did touch base with us to see if we needed anything. Any wine that you may enjoy sipping from the decks must be purchased before arriving on the island. Fantastic, restful experience for adults. Great imaginative outdoor experience for kids!
