On Kauai's North Shore... This Non-Smoking, all redwood home designed by world class yacht racer and sailing enthusiast, Peggy Slater, reflects the builders' passion for the sea and all things Hawaiian. Featuring vaulted ceilings throughout, it surrounds you with both nautical and Hawaiian themes to enhance your sense of a tropical paradise experience.
The Mermaid House is located on a quiet side road just a seven minute walk to famous snorkeling destination, Tunnels Beach. In the living room, banks of sliding windows open in multiple combinations to take advantage of the trade winds and tropical breezes. A short 90 second walk brings you to the beach at Naue Point and as you turn to the west you view spectacular Makana (Bali Hai) and the Na'Pali coast.
One and a half miles further finds you at Kee' Beach, renowned for it's spectacular sunsets. This is the end of the road on the north shore. The Mermaid house is so well maintained and has lots of Kauai charm. The wonderful (and quiet) beach is a short walk for hours of shell collecting, walking, body wave surfing, swimming, and play. My family and I have stayed at the Mermaid House several times and we will always return--we are grateful for the peace there, the authentic Hawaii experience, the careful attention to upkeep on the home and grounds, and many outdoor activities to do without ever having to get in the car.
We loved our week in the Mermaid house and felt right at home. After a busy week of adventuring on the South/West side of the island we sunk right in to the cozy North. The beaches are amazing and we swam with the magical turtles every day whether it was at Tunnels or right out front at Haena Beach (which has AMAZING snorkeling when the waves calm themselves). Our kids (12 and 6) loved lounging on the couches and looking at all the treasures in the house. My youngest talked about Peggy as if they were long friends. If you are up for it a three hour ramble will take you to the foot of the Napali and back. Sunrise is the perfect time to do this so you can watch the surfers waking up and snaking out across the reefs to get to their morning waves. The local birds are more than happy to ensure you wake up in time to greet the sun :). We didn't go into town much so can't speak to the civilization in the area but the people we met on the beach were always so lovely and happy to share a story or two! We hiked the Napali Trail to the first beach then turned inland to find the waterfall. It was BEAUTIFUL. Our kids are seasoned backcountry hikers so managed very well but its a tougher trail with many stream crossings and challenging trail in places. We will definitely be back to this lovely home and island!
A dear friend and I are still talking about our incredible extended stay at the well equipped Mermaid House...a month of bliss in true Kauai Bali Hai style - & we would return in a heatbeat! The owner Jane, was such a pleasure to deal with in planning our extended stay, was helpful with her added touches to the home, making our booking experience a joy. The Mermaid House with it's unique and beautiful seascape style throughout, its woodwork interior and vaulted ceilings is situated in the quiet lovely area of Haena -- a very short walk to stunningly beautiful beaches...all around (with the Bali Hai [Makana Mountain] backdrop, & Tunnels Beach for unbelievable snorkling. Morning beach walks & early evenings we saw green sea turtles and a few Monk seals on the way, & chatted with the few people seen on the beach - it felt like our own beach some days! We loved waking up to lush tropical greenery & the beautiful birdsongs...enjoying the Lanai, hearing & seeing the roosters/hens walking the grounds, seeing the Geckos and cooking wonderful local seafood dinners, it felt like "home" ~S. Evidence everywhere of Janes' special touches of Kauai living throughout this wonderful home and excellent local reading material, made our stay both magical and unforgettable. Would highly recommend going to see the wonder of Limahuli Botanical Gardens nearby, surrounded by Bali Hai (Makana Mountain), and the end of the road Napali Coast trail and Ke'e Beach...and Tunnels Beach & also a tour of the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens, a bit further away past Princeville.
The Mediterranean Grill, a great local dining spot a short walking distance from the house was excellent, as well as the Hale beach hut ocean front massages offered at the Spa of the Hanalei Beach Resort. A short 15 minute drive into the beautiful river valley town of Hanalei was beautiful with its winding roads and one lane bridges...where we shopped for groceries & local seafood (Dolphins Restaurant and fresh fish take out), for cooking...the Organic Market, restaurants and galleries & local shaved ice! The local Farmers Markets - amazing, meeting people of the area, loved our Helicopter tour, and Napali Coast Catamaran tour (amazing), going inside sea caves as well...saw dolphins there, and flying fish and a a few stray whales, still around into almost mid May! Already missing our beach walks...
We'll definitely come back to this magic! "Mahalo nui Jane" from your new found friends M&M, "A hui hou" ~S
We stayed at the Mermaid House for 5 nights in March 2013 and it was a truly wonderful experience. The house is enchanting with all its wood paneling, sliding windows, high ceilings, and memorabilia. The kitchen is very modern and well equipped. The daybeds in the living room are a wonderful place to relax. The grounds are full of vegetation and very private. The patio out front overlooking the private yard is a delight. And the beach is literally steps away. We were unable to spend much time actually in the water because the seas were too angry, but under better conditions the beaches walkable from the Mermaid House would have been awesome (we've heard Tunnels is the best for snorkeling). It was our first time to Kauai, and to us the location appears to be the most idyllic on the whole island. We cherished the drives to and from the Mermaid House on the two lane winding road with gorgeous scenary. We loved driving to Hanalei to eat at great restaurants and peruse the art galleries (especially notable were Postcards Cafe and Havaiki Oceanic and Tribal Art). We also enjoyed eating at Mediterranean Gourment just up the street (great food and a fantastic oceanside location) and getting takeout from the nearby Red Hot Mama's. Being very close to the Kalalua Trail along the Na Pali Coast was another great advantage. And dealing with the owner Jane was a pleasure. We feel that the Mermaid House is an exceptional value and a truly special home, and we will not even think about staying anywhere else on our next trip to Kauai.
We stayed at the mermaid house for a few days in August 2012 and it far exceeded all of our expectations. The house is so unique and beautiful and equipped with everything you could possibly need from kitchen equipment to masses of towels to some beach gear and guide books. It is very spacious, has an open lay out, really high ceilings and lovely built in lounge beds in the living room, perfect for hanging out in in the afternoon or evening when your back from the beach, craving a coctail while flipping though one of the many books on Kauai. The location is probably the best on the Island, with mountains soaring at the end of the road, where the Napali coast begins, and right across a very quiet street from the most gorgeous beach. Tunnels beach and the napali trail are just down the road, and Hanalei is an incredibly beautiful 10 min drive away. There was only two of us, though there are three bedrooms, and we had a hard time choosing which one to sleep in as they are all so charming. We could not have imagined a more perfect place to stay and will surely return should we ever come back to Kauai.
We had a wonderful week staying at the Mermaid House. The house is really charming - the Hawaiian decor is terrific, and it is comfortable, well equipped, and in the best location. A short walk to a gorgeous beach and easy walk to Tunnels. Hanalei is a short drive away. Loved the history about Peggy Slater and enjoyed learning about her. We would stay here again!
