About Thomas Byrne

I purchased and restored the nearby Thomas Harrison House (VRBO 198445) in 1991. As my interest in the area grew, I purchased and restored the Thomas Blades House as well as the Washington Melson House (VRBO 229963) and John Bruff House (click on link).

Thomas Byrne purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Thomas Byrne chose St. Michaels

The proximity to the beautiful harbor and to almost everything in Town, the architecture and the historic character of the area.

What makes this cottage unique

Walking distance to everything...harbor, shops, restaurants, museums, library, tennis courts, community pool etc. Large screened porch off of the family room. Very comfortable and relaxing home.

Totally updated and close to everything

  • 4 of 5

It was cold and there was snow. And we loved St. Michaels. The house is very authentic and historic and wonderfully updated. The kitchen, great room and master bedroom are all in new construction. A few amenities were missing (kitchen towels and a few burned out light bulbs) but otherwise it has what you need. We walked to everything in St. Michaels most stores and restaurants were not only open but uncrowded… so you get to chat with the owners. Great way to learn about the town!

Lovely spacious cottage, needs a few amenities

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at this cottage for 3 winter nights. The the location could not be better, we walked everywhere, except when we ventured to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge for the day. All the shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance, as well as the maritime museum and a small park on the water.

When we arrived, we noticed the small fence that surrounds the front of the cottage is in desperate need of painting. The siding on the house needs attention, not sure if it needs painting or just power washing, but something. The parking for the cottage is to the side of the house and is partially graveled. Unfortunately, it was raining the day we arrived, and the walk from the car to the back porch (where you enter the house) was very muddy. This part of the yard remained muddy the whole time we were there, it would be nice to have some sort of pavers to get to the back porch. There is a nice screened in back porch with patio furniture and bbq grill. It is probably very nice in the nice weather. There was some damaged screening that needed to be replaced.

The interior of the house is lovely. It is spacious and well maintained and very clean (except the freezer which needed a little cleaning, not a big deal). There is a fireplace in the front living room which is nice if you are going to spend any time in that room or the front dining room. There is a nice den with a flat screen tv. There were not many tv channels, not even CNN, it would be nice to have more. The sofa in the den is situated right under the window which unfortunately is drafty and it was cold to sit on that sofa. Maybe some insulation on the window would help. The bedrooms are wonderful, the master bedroom is very large and well appointed with a tv and comfortable bed. The full bath upstairs is also spacious and very clean. There was also a washer and dryer upstairs, very handy.

It would be nice to have some amenities in the house, there was only one half a box of kleenex in the house, no dishtowels, no hair dryer, no books or DVD's for the player.

All that said, we really enjoyed the house very much, just a few suggestions to make it excellent.

Historic Cosy Cottage in Heart of St Michael's

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from a weekend at the Thomas Blades House. The cottage is perfect -- beautifully furnished, well appointed, and historic. Inside and out, this house is great: Inside, the owner has done a marvelous job of adding modern convenience to a it-still-feels-historic house. Outside, the house is nestled among other historic properties on a cute little lane, in the heart of St Michael's. We parked our car and never moved it -- we were within walking distance of everything -- great wine bars, restaurants, shopping and several museums. Perfect for romantic get away, or family with one or maybe two children. I am afraid to share this review because we will definitely be back and want to rent this special property, and may have to compete for it more! Totally charmed by entire experience.

Great Location in quiet setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time. The location was great. We arrived and parked the cars and did not need them once to get around town. The house is a wonderful restoration. The owner has turned it into a historic district with this and the four others he has renovated. We recommend this to anyone looking for a good retreat for a weekend or for several weeks as we did. Very easy to walk anywhere in town. Great town to use your bikes for short or long rides. Boating is good and the people are friendly. If you do not want to cook you are in good shape... restaurants are great.

We loved it and think the owner is great. He did a fantastic job on this house and others.

Great location in a great town.

  • 5 of 5

As someone who grew up in the town, you could not ask for a better location. Right in the heart of town, stone’s throw away from the harbor and steps away from the shops and restaurants. The owner has done a superb job of adding modern amenities to the property without relinquishing the historical presence. Perfect place to stay for anyone looking to enjoy a convenient and relaxing vacation in the true spirit of the town.
